Great POLISH FOOD | The awesome MORSKIE OKO restauracja | a bit of Zakopane in Old Town KRAKOW

“Morskie Oko” Restaurant is located in an art nouveau tenement building, under number 8 on the Szczepański Square, with every detail of the décor referring to the unique ambiance of a highlander’s inn. The Restaurant combines love and passion for highlanders hometown - Zakopane, its culture and traditions. It is a perfect place for families and friends to gather, and for tourist to feel the characteristic Polish hospitality.
The Restaurant has an exceptional charm, there is candlelight all around, the pleasant scent of wood burning in the fireplace spreads in the air, and in the background you can hear Highlanders’ live singing. It is a one of a kind place, in which you can try Polish regional cuisine, including a variety of delicious meats such as mutton, veal, sirloin, ribs, pork knuckles, all served with savory sauces prepared accordingly to old recipes. Our specialty are hand-made dumplings and freshly baked cakes served for dessert. Our guests can also taste regional alcoholic beverages: sweet honey vodka, liqueurs based on angelica herb or sloe, and the famous plum vodka.
The name of the Restaurant comes from the most famous and the biggest lake of the Tatra Mountains, which is surrounded by an aura of mystery. Many legends and folk stories were told about “Morskie Oko”, the name can be translated as “The Eye of the Sea”. Rumor has it that there is a direct underground connection between the lake and the Adriatic Ocean. Allegedly a treasure chest and a bottle from a sailing ship has been recovered from the depths of the lake. Other legend tells a story of an old inn, which was flooded and lost at the bottom of “The Eye of the Sea”. It hasn’t been found until today…

Looks beautiful. Definitely Zakopianski-style throughout and a great choice for those not visiting Zakopane. We spent a week in Zakopane this summer on our 1.5 month trip to Poland, so we skipped Morskie Oko in Krakow. However, there is another great spot on Szczepanski square, Kluska na Placu, that we really enjoyed. Their patio was beautiful in the summer and their menu is somewhat regional, too (some dishes from Silesia region.)

I took some friends who were visiting to this place while I was in Krakow. It was just before Christmas so quite busy but very atmospheric! We were in the basement area which was very nice and live goralskie music too! Really good food at a great price! I'm looking forward to my next visit to Krakow at the end of March. Keep up the great work Nina & Ged!
