Made something like this when I was a boy. But mine was out of red clay and I really didn't know what I was doing so it only lasted a couple of years before it cracked. But for something made by a 10 year old I was happy with it. 40 years or so later I've built a bunch of stuff over the years but I never made another wood stove out of clay or cement. Maybe I should give it a go again.

Styrofoam? Chunks of wood or cooked chicken? 😉 I have no idea what kind of metal bars. Are they solid or hollow?Actually, could you please help me by writing a supply list including lengths?

To prevent cracking, make this from refractory cement or at least add 30-50% gypsum powder to your mix. This can be bought in a bag or harvested from scrap drywall (sheetrock). You can readily find scraps at residential construction sites and demolition sites. Most big box hardware stores will probably have some in their dumpsters as well. Another tip is to make sure the slump of your concrete isn't too high. This is a measure of how easily it flows. If concrete is really wet when it is poured, it will shrink more during the curing process. This creates internal tensile stresses that lead to cracking. Adding in the expansion and contraction of burn cycles and it won't last very long.
@MrW3iss2 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Besides adding gypsum, is there any other additive we could use so that it can store more thermal heat, perhaps? Maybe it's not necessary, but am wondering...
@dhawthorne16342 жыл бұрын
@@MrW3iss That is not the purpose of this particular build. This one was clearly intended to be used for cook with little to no wood and little to no smoke and soot. In fact, refractory cement reflects thermal energy, so the outside will remain fairly cool and it will use even less fuel to run. To heat with this, stick a large chunk of metal over the hole, like a break drum or cracked cast iron pot. It won't be super effective, but it will radiate more heat that way. A purpose built heating stove that releases heat slowly will have a metal core with soapstone or granite masonry around it, but that will be heavy and expensive. For a cheap and relatively efficient stove, look into a double barrel stove. They don't have to be 55 gallon and there are a lot of modifications you can do to make them more efficient, such as adding additional barrels, brazing pipes through the top barrel so a fan can circulate air though it like a steam engine's boiler, etc. The downside is that they don't last as long as a traditional cast iron stove. The sheet steel will eventually rust through and need to be replaced. The mounting hardware from the kit should still last through multiple rebuilds.

FYI, for maximum concrete hardness, once it's set up after a few hours, immerse the entire thing in water for one week at least, or one month for max hardness. Then let it dry fully before firing. BTW, how long does your method last before it starts to crumble from the heat? I use black steel stove pipe to make the U for a rocket grill I use once a week, year round, and the steel gets weak and burns out after two years on average. I've rebuilt my grill four times so far and have been considering using concrete of some type instead.

@@davidschwartz5127 Yep. The heat of the fire, moisture condensing on it when it's cold, weathering... So finding the right material that will last years is the thing. I found some glazed clay sewer pipes last fall and am going to try using them to make the 'J' then encase them in home made fire brick crete. I'm hoping that will be the ideal material combo. Though I think 1/4" steel pipe, or square tubing would be good too, but that stuff is a bit pricey and would need to be welded.

@ Creative Cement, I've been into wood gas stoves for a long time and I've built quite a few of them. I was in the Himalayas in 2014 to teach the locals how to cook smoke-free. Your creations would be really helpful for all regions where people still cook with the three stones and smoke poisoning. At the moment I'm working on a small wood gas stove to heat caravans and camper vans. Would be great if you could post a link from my channel here to reach more people who are concerned with our topic wood gas. I think your ovens and hobs are really great. Thanks for uploading. Have fun moving on. Another important question, how are your experiences with cement after a long period of use. Do cracks form or does the cement remain stable when exposed to high temperatures?

Thank you, it's better to use fire-resistant materials
@criomat2 жыл бұрын
ordinary concrete will crack. you need fire-resistant cement or refractory bricks to line the fire pit to avoid breaking of the stove
@ReelSpider2 жыл бұрын
Concrete holds moisture, moisture in a fire pit can cause it to EXPLODE, violently.

Great idea. I'd stick some metal grab handles into the sides before it dries as picking up so much concrete could be very heavy. You wouldn't want to break it or even worse your foot

@CreativeCement2 жыл бұрын
@andrewnikonov97422 жыл бұрын
