Pretty crazy, we saw some groms come in fast i asked them what the deal was and they said they saw a huge white shark close enough to see its eyes swim by them, we put the drone up fast to see if it was there, sure enough it was swimming toward main pack of world tour surfers! We tried to warn the first guy with drone as we were far away he noticed us and pulled his legs up but didnt see shark it was rio waida, next it gets sprayed by ian gentil and curiously checks out a local south african surfer named eli! We alerted people on beach who alerted surfers all went in, the shark cruised on his way up the coast and continued everyone had a great day! What a crazy chance to see one like that! South Africa is incredible !

I met a drone guy who was employed by the NSW Lifesavers to survey popular beaches to warn people of marine activity below. His drone was fitted with a speaker to give verbal warnings if he felt anyone was in danger. (I'm surprised there isn't some international drone signal for a shark warning.) The interesting thing about his job was that he started to observe other marine life leaving the areas where the larger sharks would frequent. He's seeing these patterns at different beaches. For example by Curl Curl, he'd see big manta rays when the sharks weren't around, and sure enough, when the sharks were around, the manta rays were nowhere to be found.

Ive been watching shark vids all day, then you post this. Ha. Ya just know these things are under us and cruising past at least 4 or 5 times in our surfing lives. Especially where i grew up south of Sydney. I had feelings of dread like something huge was under me a few times. Ya can feel it. I had a big one fly past me in big surf and the water boiled from displacement and i did a little whirlpool circle. It must've been huge, we seen its tail flick out as we were paddling in. It was massive. Scary. Especially after watching the Egypt vid. And the Simon Nellis one near where i used to surf. Brutal. Crazy vid. Reveals a lot. Thanks Nate.

He said we were mad for surfing them breaks. Ive snorkeled for abalone in that section too. To me the most interesting (and scary) part of this video is that none of the surfers ever seems to notice the shark. Even the first guy that the drone alerts and who does seem to understand it may be a shark as he stops splashing his feet in the water, never actually identifies the direction the shark is comming from. One of the two guys sitting close together in the water looks right at it, but does not see it, and the other guy has the shark follow him at pretty short range without knowing it.

So amazing to see the sharks curiosity and decision making process as he made his way up the line. Despite the media theatrics whenever there is an attack, it's evident (as more footage like this comes out) that they really aren't that interested in us for the most part. This was most likely a juvi, albeit a big old boy, exploring the world around him. And like groms, they occasionally do something stupid and out of character. Great footage Nate 🤙🏻

With all of the footage of juveniles hanging out in populated Southern California beach lineups filled with swimmers and surfers while they hunt for stingrays, it seems that the young sharks get plenty of exposure to humans and learn to distinguish humans are not their food source. They carry this familiarity with them into adulthood. It seems that GW shark attacks are the rare exception of their numerous encounters with humans and are most likely the cause of mistaken identity. I remember reading the Mark Healey interview discussing how he came up with the idea that he could actually fin-ride a GW. He deduced that they were very intelligent animals since their main food source is the seal, which are intelligent mammals, and so GWs must be pretty smart themselves.

Damn! That was some amazing footage. I don't know why I've had my drone as long as I have still and never used it. Your video might be the motivation I've been looking for to do that. Incredible how you were able to stay with this shark like this and how that guy went right over him! Just some excellent footage that deserves all the views it can get! Thanks for sharing!

I think drones should be a part of surfer security. I suggested to my sister years ago, that they should have a drone, at least to do a flyover, so they know if Big Bertha is out there in the line up, or close by....

It definitely stopped and checked the guy in white and red rashy out. I do shark surveillance for surf lifesaving in NSW Australia and our drones are fitted with a speaker/siren for times like this but unfortunately the drones they use are 3 times the price but they need them for the speaker function.

So...maybe $3k? To save lives? Or at least incredible trauma? Seems like a no-brainer to have 2-3 of them circling Jbay all-day during all swells. Corona or WSL ffs chip in NOW.

@@thejonathanrath the kits we use are around $6k Australian each and we normally use 2 of them. Each kit has drone, controller and 6 batteries, so in total we have 12 batteries and a spare drone incase needed. On a typical day we do 16 flights so also need a way to charge the batteries. We also get hired to fly for NSW surfing at their comps in my local area, during comps we use 2 pilots so their is always a drone in the air patrolling and use 4 kits and a generator.

I was worried there for a minute about Indonesia's greatest surfer ever (arguably, but imho). Drone tech can spot these animals, obviously. What is needed is some sort of clear warning speaker to alert the surfers. Yes, it's rare they attack and this guy/gal was minding their own business, but 12' and up are flat-out dangerous animals. Hoping for a safe event!

That’s insane footage Nate dog! But Q; why did it take your ‘by chance’ footage of this incident to alert surfers in the lineup of sharks whereabouts? Are there not drones being flown whilst WSL surfers are in water during contest window?(especially at J-bay) another wozzle failure? Was there not a surfer in white/red contest rashie?? Also, do any drones have audio capability??whereas u could’ve warned rio to lift his lil drumsticks and got the feck outa there etc?? Alarm sound? could b a worthy investment/slash addition!
@MatP.-qp9qz
@MatP.-qp9qz Жыл бұрын
Maybe have drones fly grids during competitions with the capability to communicate with a shore base? When the shore is alerted they can fire up an audio signal and signal flags to warn anyone in the water they need to come to shore? For that matter it would be a matter of simple software linked to all the airborne drones to track them individually. That way not only do they know there is a threat, but also pinpoint where the threat is. Just trying to use what is left of my old used up surfer brain.

We need a sort of universal drone movement that would be something that a drone would not normally do, and would be clear to surfers that it is the universal "shark in water" drone signal without requiring special equipment. maybe something like straight up and down over 20 ft or a waggling movement, tight circles that creates certain prop noises or something, dunno. drone guys might have a good answer for this.
