I respect his analysis but there are some points which I would like to put it as I have spoken to painters 1.There is no doubt asian paints is the best (only best) because when the paint is applied the adhesion is vry good. Others stand no where near to it 2. Painters usually recommend other paints only due to the commission they get from the sellers and asian paints don't give commision because they know there quality and the company know people will buy any way. 3. Even though they get commission they still use asian royal for the sealing and other things because of the finish that product gives and no other product can be even compared. 4.I asked painter then why don't you recommend some other brand so that u will get commission,he said I can recommend but once the paint goes off they will get hold of me not the company or the seller because I am the one who recommended and the trust is gone. 5. The life span of asain paints is way to good compared to others. 6. Even after so many years asian paints is still no 1 because of the quality and the r&d they do, they are way ahead of other companies. 6. Grasim can put the money but the technology and the r&d team it's not easy to build because there are very less graduates in the field of paint technology as a graduate my self I know more knowledge is only gained through the experience . 7. Grasim can be a part of the game but I doubt If They can steal it from asian because many tried till date even giving huge offers and commision where as asian barely giving any they still hold there place. 8. The great companies become great because of there team and the product quality not because they have got more money. Lets see what will be the future of this industry. Shobha ji, I don't disagree with anything you said here. Asian Paints is a Great Company and Will remain so. My hypothesis is that the Greatness will be tested over the next few years and I think Asian Paints will still remain number 1 for all the reasons you mentioned. In the best case for Grasim, it will be number 2 (Not Number 1) However, stock prices behave differently when the industry structure changes. Valuations today leave little room for any disappointment in the whole industry. Asian Paints has NEVER LOST marketshare in the past 2 decades, it has gained share gradually. The scenarios that emerge Asian Keeps Current Share ~ 42% of overall industry and still remains Number 1 Asian Loses Little Share : loses 1 to 2% ONLY, comes to 40% and still remains Number 1 Asian Loses lot of Share : loses > 5% share and comes to 37% and still remain Number 1 I can only think of scenarios today and scenarios means uncertainty and markets don't like uncertainty of this kind. I am not as opinionated about the strength of any franchise like you are or other market participants are. I can see two variables only Supply is going up 2.5x Revenue will go up 1.8x Something has to give in ....

Very good subject matter.Actually this is already happening in lot of companies like Glakso, Whirlpool, Colgate, Relaxo etc. They were great companies one time and now have become good companies. The future of not only paints but other sectors is not good as people today bet on past performances for investing. If this logic holds good everywhere then investors in all large caps are in trouble.

App bilkul thik keh rahein hain, it's not easy to beat Asian paints. totally agree. Lekin yeh Asian paints ko haraney ki baat nahin hai. Asian Paints will remain number 1, but there will be a period off industry turmoil where a strong payer will want to take the number 2 or 3 position and all the current players will have to give away some share to the new player. Such period is usually tough for the sector overall. Will discuss in detail in next video... that is the whole idea of Great Industry Structure to a Good Industry Structure

Yes there will be disruption but IT services is a large enterprise industry with a large food chain and no dominant player like Asian Paints... there are many players who already compete heavily. Startups have to been seen individually against which product-market they are targeting. Cant give a one size fits all answer to this

I never said the players won't make money... they will all make money... but it will be slightly less than what they would have made earlier... great money will become good money.... There are 100 customers in a sabzi mandi and 5 shops... biggest shops had 40 customers, second had 30, and other 3 had 10 each. Each of them sell only for cash.... A new 6th shop opens which is as big as the second biggest shop and starts selling for credit.. What happens ?
