I was brought up with these old valve radios and when I left college I became a radio technician. Valve radios have souls and it is so nice to switch one on and wait for the soul to warm up before coming back to life again. The first radios sets I built was in the late 1940s and used 2 volt filament valves. Even today, 70 years later, I love working on valve radios.
@ronaldschild157 Жыл бұрын
When you use the term "valve" that is most commonly used by the British. In the U.S. we call them vacuum tubes. "Valve" is accurate, as that is how these components are represented on a schematic representation: "V1", "V2", "V3", etc.

Allen, I could not have said it any better myself. Your words gave me chills. This is exactly how I feel about my litter of old tube radios. Thank you for saying it the way I always wanted to and for saving history .
@Thermionman8 жыл бұрын
many people have no idea how wonderful vacuum tubes sound...even AM in mono radio sounds incredibly deep and rich on a vacuum tube console radio..or even a small table top ....My DVD/TV/VCR etc all go into a vacuum tube amplifier and the sound is out of this world especially for movie music soundtracks ,incredibly rich warm bass frequencies and silky highs... ......and believe me radio is alive and well..... and every night I listen to old radio shows that are played nightly here in Ontario ...like "The Whistler" "Suspense" The Key" ,Inner Sanctum" etc etc... It is great to listen to these shows in the dark especially if the radio has a lighted dial....You can also get low power AM transmitters and actually transmit radio shows /music etc from another source to the radio in another room .... and also believe me I hear Morse code on shortwave all the time...... and interesting music all the time on shortwave coming from India ,China etc or Cuba (Radio Havana) Shortwave is an experience the way it seems to "phase shift" like a wind sound and makes music sound really neat ..........Lately there seems to be people taking radio consoles and removing the vacuum tube chassis (not "the guts" I hate that) .........and turning the cabinet into a bar liquor cabinet etc........or placing a solid state amplifier inside.......really disgusts me...... And there are a zillion videos on Yotube,..... books.... and online antique radio forums on how to repair and restore them....

Btw I can't tell you how many electric organs and reel to reel recorders I've scraped just to get my hands on those beautiful tube amplifiers. The only organ I didn't have the hart to scrap was a Hammond A-100.

The radio shows from the Golden Age of Radio (which ended about 1961 with "Gunsmoke" being the last radio program aired from Hollywood, California) are fascinating, well written and acted for the most part. By the way, to many "Gunsmoke" with William Conrad is considered the best radio show ever aired. And don't forget the great variety shows such as "The Big Show" "The Jack Benny Show" and the "The Railroad Hour" That list could go "on-and-on". The available shows which have been restored (and most notably by Radio Archives out of Spokane, WA) are now available for us to hear today. Radio still comprises 80% of the listening audience but today primarily with "Talk Shows. The old radio shows are a treasure trove of great entertainment which is still available today and can be played through the warm sound of a restored vacuum tube radio. The unique design style of the old radios and the vacuum tube sound, far surpasses what is available with the electronics of today

These damn old radios go from a hobby to an obsession before you know what happened. The best thing about it, I think, Is we are actually bringing an important part of history back to life so that future generations can see, touch, operate, use and enjoy that part of history. There is not many historical things that are that involved and personal.

I've been in the radio hobby (both collecting and restoring) for over 30 years. I cringe every time I see a listing for a radio on ebay, and the seller says "It doesn't work, probably just needs a tube"---the tubes are rarely at fault. I also don't do repair work for others, because they think 5 minutes with a screwdriver and $20 should cover it----sometimes getting one working properly can take many hours, and even days on rare occasions.

Old radios are cool. I remember when I was young there were correspondence courses advertised in Mechanics Illustrated and Popular Mechanics magazine that taught you how to be a "Radio Engineer". Every once in awhile I come across an old issue at a rummage sale and it takes me back. I get a little misty remembering the old days. And every radio represents the times they were made. The look. The sound. The technology. All unique. And most made here in the USA. Not anymore, for decades. ☹️

Asking hundreds more for his radios than what they are worth and relating them to the stupidest things is good? Just check his website. His prices are absolutely unrealistic. For a common radio only worth $75 restored, he will give it's color a special name, polish the living hell out of it, relate it to "The Jetsons", and ask $200 for it. Thats about the cheapest it gets with him. The cheapest ones have various issues, and are $140. Some are far more than that though. He has plenty listed that are above $200, as high as $1,500! Do not buy anything from this guy. You will not get your money back if you were to sell them, and every radio is so expensive it's a flat out rip off.

Ebay! Ebay! Ebay! Go on Ebay! Don't be too specific with your searches if you want something untested and low priced, because that means the guy selling it doesn't know what he's got! Also make sure it says "works" if you don't know how to recap them etc, or better yet splurge and get a restored one for like 200 bucks! Check out videos on the model your looking at on KZbin and online forums too, when on eBay or Etsy be sure they are real photos of the radio and try to contact the seller to ask what it does when they power it on to be sure your getting what you want. Try to get something made in the USA like a 1950s zenith or made in Germany like a Grunding, transistor pocket ones are also fun, look up zenith royal 500 or arvin lunchbox radio, both are great performers for long distance... also watch shango066 on KZbin he's very knowledgeable and he's quite a comedian! I also occasionally post on my channel here: kzbin.info/door/DBQYzEb3OJZYGHMvhsYb4Q ... Good luck!

Hard to imagine but there was once a time when these things were considered the latest high tech, in step with the current fashions of the time, and nearly miraculous what they were able to do. A box speaking like a human or playing beautiful music that originated in some distant place with little but ordinary air between them? Must've bordered on the supernatural!
