Exactly what I was thinking…how can you be a monk and then just take off the robes when ever and then come back to being a monk as if it were a 9 to 5 job. Being a monk is very different than a lay follower you can be a lay person and do a lot of practice. But for a monk that’s different there’s a lot of precepts set by the Buddha for monks. You can still be on the middle path when you are a lay person or a monk but monks are there for people who are very serious about the practice and not just to gain the title of “monk”…and before anything is said it’s not that we dislike what he’s doing. Also he’s not doing anything wrong but being a so called “monk” and living a lay life doesn’t make sense. It’s more of that we are confused on how one can be a monk but also at the same time not be a monk.

Buddhism does not limit salvation to sexuality but there are rules that the sangha must obey. By not aligning themselves to this, one cannot be a true monk. It almost appears that this monk only performs rituals and not cultivate. What use is a man whose body is wearing the robes of the monk but his heart yearns for other men and makeup. If he wants to be a monk he should dedicate his life to dharma. But probing into the role of Japanese monks will only open up a can of worms about Japanese society and Buddhism. Amitabha, this truly is the Dharma Ending Age. 🙏🏻

In Japan there are many Buddhist sects with different teachings, at first you may associate the monk hood by rules such as celibacy, no earthly desires, etc. In some particular Buddhist Sects in Japan, some sects allow their disciples to marry, for the sole purpose of reproducing, or are open about having some disciples to freely choose their sexuality, and have their own personal beliefs and freedoms. These rules are quite different from most other teachings of Buddhism, such as, Theravada (Mostly in South-East Asia), Mahayana Buddhism (Mostly China, Taiwan, Korea), and Vajrayana Buddhism (Mongolia, Tibet, Nepal, Myanmar), whilst Japan follow Chan/Zen Buddhism which derived from Pure Land Buddhism from China. I hope this clears up any confusion, you may ask me further questions.

depend on the votes that you have, some monks do get married and it's common for some lamas to have a wife (in both cases, must be someone who brings benefits to your practice)
@しゅーおーくらけらん5 жыл бұрын
There are many sects of Buddhism throughout the world with different rules and philosophies, and in Japan there are a few that don't forbid marriage(or more accurately forbidding romantic love/sexual desires). In fact many temples are past down through lineage so marriage is a way of continuing the "family business". I'm not familiar of any sect that has female monks/nuns which are allowed to marry, usually the wife of a monk is just a normal person but I guess female monks that can marry also exist.
@sunstrikersunchild2335 жыл бұрын
In japan they can get married.
@wilhelm27555 жыл бұрын
Yes, as some people already said, in Japan you can be a monk and still be able to get married. This is because in Japan, most of monks don't follow the Vinaya rules (which make you unable to marry among others), especialy monks of Pure Land Buddhism, which apparently this guy belongs to. This is the case since the Middle Age at least, because in Japan the bodhisattva vows are seen to be more important than vinaya in most sects. And the believers of Pure Land Buddhism think that no matter how hard you try, you will not find salvation in this very life because we are in the Degenerate Age of the Law, and the only hope to be saved is to pray Amida Buddha in order to be able to reborn in his Pure Land paradise. So they regard vinaya discipline as useless, because you can reborn in Pure Land in either way.

I can't judge since I don't know or understand Japanese buddhist (?) culture. I can't project my understanding of how or what monks stand for in another culture to Japanese monks. It's a bit confusing and somewhat difficult for me to perceive a make up artist/lgbt+ to be a monk. I feel like it's ok to be a lgbt make up artist that is also a buddhist, but not to actually lable one as a monk. But, since I read some comments that Japanese monks can get married and drink, and I guess have sex too. So I'm just going to leave it as his, if he's happy and Japanese monks aren't offended, then so be it.

Different sect of Buddhism practice differently. Each sect has it own goal for Buddhism. Some sect helps people through Buddha’s teaching. Some sect follows buddha path for the goal of enlightenment. No matter what, the guideline to be Buddhism follower ( include monk) is exist, but in the end you follow all the guidelines or not, it depends on you. Buddha doesn’t force you. It’s you who decide. Buddhism is just a peaceful religious. Desire is a group sin feeling. They’re your inner devils . And it’s okay to have it in you because we’re all born with it. Most of the time, the sin feelings take control over us, but Buddha teaches us how to use our mind to control back over those devils. So just calm down. The media might be over saturated with the word monk, but overall he’s just a Buddhism follower.
