3 years after the first, the Old vs New style video has returned! The Class 317 currently operated by Greater Anglia is soon to be replaced, meanwhile the new Class 745 has started its operations. This video is a comparison between the two!

From a modern prospective the class 317s look very outdated, expecially with those windows installed and the door opening/closing buttons haven't even been changed.

I have been on a 745 and excited to go on the 720s when they come out. Although im gonna miss the 317s im exited for these trains.

It's thanks to WAGN that we got this 2+2 layout back in the day althought I don't think the sets allocated to Great Northern got refurbished. Unfortunately there's nothing on the ceiling to hang onto so standing was an issue when commuting used to be the way of things.

Took 317s all the time when i went to Stansted Airport College, didn't mind using them for Herts East to Tottenham as it was the norm, but when i changed for the Stansted Express in the mornings and found out it was subbed for a 317 instead of a 379 that used to annoy me, especially during winter when the heaters almost never worked. Me and my mates who i took the train with used to sarcastically go "yaaaay the cattle truck's here", can't wait for the 379s and 720s to replace them, will make the Lee Valley line look more refreshing rather than stuck in the 80's

@@jefffranklin4894 They had heaters? I can't remember a single time any of these being slightly warm in the winter. The 315's too, I may be stuck working from home but I definitely don't miss freezing cold trains at 6am

the 317 is a good train,since they were given a late life refurbishment from 2016 onwards,the 317/6s are the only type of 317 that are not all refurbished yet,the other types of 317s on Greater anglia are more comfy than the 317/6 and have different seats

I am not sure this comparison is really correct. In large the class 317's are going to be replaced by the new class 720. The class 745 as well as being used to Norwich will also be mainly used as Stansted Express trains so the comparison should really be with the class 379 the present trains used for this service.

We still have the class 321's on the walton on the naze/Clacton line. We are due to get the 720's at some point. The 321's are showing their age.

Yeah but greater angila refurbished the 321's in 2016 and i prefer the refurbished 321's as they have plug sockets and new toilets.

Indeed they are the class 745's come as emu only while the class 755 come as bimode while the class 755/3 sets can be upgraded with battery packs thus making them trimode.

there going to be replaced by 720 aventras,which arent going to be coming onto the WAML (the route the 317s and 379s run on) till about autumn 2021,but the 379s and 317/7s coming on from overground will be replacing some of the non compliant sets..

Can't comment on the class 317 as I've not travelled on them (although I have travelled extensively on the similar class 321/322 in West Yorkshire) but had my 1st trip on a class 745 recently and while it had some good points compared to the older trains, overall I wasn't impressed.

I'm not a massive fan of the new aesthetic . It's just not british standard enough for me. Although the thing I like about the flirts , is that they arent dead silent like some of the 700s and adventuras. You can actually hear their traction motors clearly. Overall..I think making a retro designed train based on the 317s would be much preferred. Something that is completely new, but looks like an offspring from the older fleets

They've likely stopped creating them,...unless your allowed to ask manufacturers to create more? Voltage - Transport yes, only once tbh. I was waiting for a 321 on platform 9 at stratford and a 745 came instead and my friend was bugging me to get on that since we were waiting for too long. And I almost rode it a second time when a 745 came instead of a 321 on platform 9, my mum wanted to get on that but i told her that i wanted to go on a 321 and we ended up on a 321. Plus it was my mums first time on a 321.
