Kudus are bovids that constitute the genus Strepsiceros, they are native only to Africa, there are two extant species of kudu: the Lesser Kudu (Strepsiceros imberbis) and the Greater Kudu (Strepsiceros strepsiceros), the former has two subspecies, which are the Northern Lesser Kudu (Strepsiceros imberbis imberbis) and the Southern Lesser Kudu (Strepsiceros imberbis australis), whereas the latter has four subspecies, which are the Eastern Greater Kudu (Strepsiceros strepsiceros chora), the Western Greater Kudu (Strepsiceros strepsiceros cottoni), the Zambezi Greater Kudu (Strepsiceros strepsiceros zambesiensis), and the Cape Greater Kudu (Strepsiceros strepsiceros strepsiceros), the closest living relatives of the kudus (genus Strepsiceros) are the elands (genus Taurotragus).
