@cjeelde Жыл бұрын
That's because Nintendo and Sony worked on "Nintendo Play Station" for SNES. They never released that. Instead, Sony the saw the chance to release their own console: PlayStation (now as one word) while Nintendo gambled with Philips (Mario & Zelda for CD-i) and they released N64 because they did no longer wanna use CD. That made many games "for Nintendo" move to PlayStation because the developers couldn't fit their games on the cartridges. So they went for CD instead. I think Final Fantasy 7 needed 7 (?) N64 cartridges and that was unacceptable so they released the game for PS1 instead. A big win for Sony. Now Nintendo lost Final Fantasy. But also, Sony wanted a controller more similar to SNES while Nintendo changed the controller a lot for N64. So this is why PS1 got some amount of "Nintendo vibes". It's a "Nintendo console" without Nintendo's own games plus that Sony won Final Fantasy's future while Nintendo lost it. Sony's success in the video game business is so much thanks to Nintendo.

If it has to be between these 2, I'm Super Nintendo all the way. When I think about which library I played more at the time, the SNES was by far the 16-bit console that I played the most, and has the most games of any console in my personal top 10 with Earthbound, Super Metroid, Super Mario World, and Final Fantasy III. The PS2 got played very little by comparison, and has no games that make my personal top 10. More than anything, I played its awesome arcade compilations, and spent a few glorious weeks playing the Metal Gear Solid 2 demo that came with Zone of the Enders over and over, capped off by a nice pile of shmups. When I think about what I play more now, it's still the SNES library. I go back to those games more than any other console, and 16-bit games more than any other generation. The SNES has a wide variety of games that offer up really unique experiences, whether RPGs, platformers, shooters, puzzle games, or just crazy stuff like On the Ball, Cacoma Knight in Bizyland, Firestriker, Dolucky Puzzle Adventure '94, or who knows what else. The PS2 had some good variety as well, but due to the style of visuals that were popular at the time, there's a same-yness to the visuals of many games. The ones I gravitated to were the ones with more personality in the US- Chulip, Katamari Damacy, Under the Skin, Flipnic... or the shooters like Gradius V. For me, the PS2 is the third best Playstation even. I'll take the PS4 and PS1 both over it. All that said, everything is purely subjective. If we're keeping opinions out of it and just going with facts, the greatest would probably be the original PS3, just because it could play three generations of games. Tough to beat that bang for the buck... yet I play it less than most of my consoles.

As far as the 6th gen goes I would have to agree with you regarding the GameCube holding up much better IMO, and the Xbox had some awesome games too. Halo 2 parties are still great times! Dodonpachi DouJou, or however it’s spelled, is getting a rerelease but M2 btw!!! I know liking modern games for their graphics is like dating a beautiful girl with a terrible personality, however, depending on how Spider-Man 2 for the PS5 is it might be my new favorite system of all time. It feels weird saying that lol.

For the first question: I grew up in the N64 era and I do love the smaller library of the SNES. I'd imagine this is nostalgia speaking, of course, but the first party games for SNES is just too much for the PS2 in my book. And the superior controller obviously 😅
@daedalus547 Жыл бұрын
That's a tough one, both have great games, both have cheese games too. But I'm going to go with the SNES, but not for the reasons you'd think. The reason is simplicity, no moving parts, the medium is more durable, the controllers don't really have anything to break.

Thank you for a fun comparison with your always excellent perspective. My bias leans more SNES, but that’s easily a byproduct of growing up in that era. I don’t know that I could suggest a better console comparison, really, as the only other consoles that feel quite as legendary might be the NES and Genesis, and I’m not sure how well a comparison between those two might hold up. Great work as always!

For me its between the PS2 and Xbox 360. To me, the 6th and 7th generations were the peak of gaming. The PS2 unquestionably was the best of the 6th gen, and I would certainly lean more towards 360 than PS3 because of exclusives like Halo 3 and the Gears of War series. Plus because XBL>PSN (which is another reason the 7th gen was so good, the absolute peak of online gaming, a once in a lifetime experience). Of course, it may just be because of my age (though I dont think so). I was born in 1993 and while I had a Master System, Mega Drive and PS1 growing up- you could argue that the PS2 and 360 came during my 'peak' gaming years ie between like 8-18. Also, I've never owned a Nintendo console so I cant speak on the SNES anyway.
@lonreed9743 Жыл бұрын
The SNES was in a league of their own but when the PlayStation came along it had a much wider appeal with RPGs, fighting, racing and it was arcade quality out of the box!
@pd1426 Жыл бұрын
I feel PS2 was the total package. You can tap into late 90s gaming with PS1 backwards compatibility and experience early 00s gaming all on one system. Also if you wanted to play the guitar hero games and DVD player. No denying that SNES was a great early 90s console, the games are so easily emulated these days that I would recommend a PS2 over a SNES, if looking to collect for a system.

I good "best console of all time“ pairing in my opinion is Wii vs NES. Both caused a massive surge in their respective times...with both bringing back major interest to the gaming industry. The NES bringing people back older gamers from the gaming crash and bringing newbies in who wanted to experience 8-bit gaming. And the Wii bringing back older gamers with the virtual console and the newbies in with its family-oriented nature. And I personally see the PS2 as the better console in my opinion. Seeing as I grew up in the Wii generation, it's the closest in terms of quality.

A lot of my top 10 favorites are from the 6th and 4th generations. My favorite console is the PS2(because I get the PS1 library as well) but my favorite generation is the 4th generation. 6th gen was the last generation I was a hardcore gamer. While I put tons of hours in Bioware titles & COD MW - Black Ops, I started isolating to only playing series I grew up with. Creating 3 Shepards, 4 Grey Warderns, and Prestiging 2 - 3 times; I missed out on Lollipop Chainsaw. Which I'm playing through now as it is a fun stupid game I can pick up and play in a short amount of time.

For me, 2D's last hurrah in the market space (before the resurgence of indies) was absolutely on the DS (and to an extent the PSP as well). During the exploding budgets of HD gaming, but before the rise of mobile gaming, handhelds were the last bastion for creative, low budget experiments. I don't mean to belabor your aversion to the DS and its games but it really does surprise me that you haven't found more to your taste there, considering in a lot of ways it melds the 2D renaissance of the 16-bit era with the huge library and install-base that the PS2 offered.
@brichan1851 Жыл бұрын
SNES gets my vote by a thin margin. The PS2 was a blast with an amazing library of long lost gems. Gran Truismo 3 A-Spec, Street Fighter 15th Anniversary Edition, Virtua Fighter 4: Evolutuon, Dark Cloud…. All so great along with so many others. Still, it can’t beat Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, Legend of Zelda: a Link to the Past, Duper Castlevania IV, Super Metroid, The Donkey Kong Country series, Super Mario World, Super Metroid… classics all. While neither would be the best consoles of all time, I would love to see a comparison between the Neo Geo ACS and the Sega Dreamcast. Both were ground breaking systems in their own respective generations and both were at home arcade style game havens. Perhaps this could be a future video idea. Thanks a million for your great trip down memory lane. ❤

This is a tough debate and these guys are definitely in the conversation. I would also love to add the GameCube, Xbox 360, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation 4. When I talk to my kids and their friends, nieces and nephews and general young people they always bring up these consoles as their favorites. My personal favorites are the N64 and PlayStation 1.
