@@rannarharmaste9857 Yeah, there are some similarities, but i cant help but think objectively Dreamcast wins every time. Dreamcast was technically ahead of its time. I think the PS1 feels more like a natural successor to the SNES than the N64 does, and the PS2 carries on that trajectory. Kind of a spiritual legacy like Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, TimeSplitters.

That's because Nintendo and Sony worked on "Nintendo Play Station" for SNES. They never released that. Instead, Sony the saw the chance to release their own console: PlayStation (now as one word) while Nintendo gambled with Philips (Mario & Zelda for CD-i) and they released N64 because they did no longer wanna use CD. That made many games "for Nintendo" move to PlayStation because the developers couldn't fit their games on the cartridges. So they went for CD instead. I think Final Fantasy 7 needed 7 (?) N64 cartridges and that was unacceptable so they released the game for PS1 instead. A big win for Sony. Now Nintendo lost Final Fantasy. But also, Sony wanted a controller more similar to SNES while Nintendo changed the controller a lot for N64. So this is why PS1 got some amount of "Nintendo vibes". It's a "Nintendo console" without Nintendo's own games plus that Sony won Final Fantasy's future while Nintendo lost it. Sony's success in the video game business is so much thanks to Nintendo.

@@bigolebot no it had 3 good games: SM64 OOT MM I prefer NES and SNES everyday over N64. I always rank N64 as Nintendo's worst home console ever made. I've had NES, SNES, GC, Wii and Switch. Never N64 and Wii U - for a reason... I'm a Nintendo fan boy but I don't like everything they make. N64 and Wii U were not good enough. These consoles could have been good enough with some tweaks and better game library. But I'm happy that Nintendo learned from the mistakes and made way better consones. GC was the result from the mistakes with N64. Finally a useful controller! Switch was the result from the mistakes with Wii U. That's the sign for a great company. Nintendo learned from their mistakes! They corrected what they did wrong! So I am very happy! But Switch is not 100% perfect. I miss Virtual Console for example. I wish VC could co-exist with NSO :)

I was a Sega kid so Genesis was my preferred 16 bit console. And since I was a Sega kid, Saturn was my prefered successor in the 32 bit era, so I didn't get into the PlayStation craze. As a result, PS2 just didn't impress me after Dreamcast, but with Sega's demise I picked up an X-Box, and that blew me away. Bought the 360 when it came out, had the HD DVD drive, and when that died I needed to buy a blu-ray. Well, low and behold PS3 was the same price! Honestly, that impressed me more than any console before it. PlayStation suddenly became my favorite after getting into some of the PS1 and 2 backcatelogs, and kinda made me wish I'd played them sooner. Yeah, the earlier PlayStation consoles weren't as technically impressive as their respective competitors, but some of the exclusives sure were a lot of fun.

If it has to be between these 2, I'm Super Nintendo all the way. When I think about which library I played more at the time, the SNES was by far the 16-bit console that I played the most, and has the most games of any console in my personal top 10 with Earthbound, Super Metroid, Super Mario World, and Final Fantasy III. The PS2 got played very little by comparison, and has no games that make my personal top 10. More than anything, I played its awesome arcade compilations, and spent a few glorious weeks playing the Metal Gear Solid 2 demo that came with Zone of the Enders over and over, capped off by a nice pile of shmups. When I think about what I play more now, it's still the SNES library. I go back to those games more than any other console, and 16-bit games more than any other generation. The SNES has a wide variety of games that offer up really unique experiences, whether RPGs, platformers, shooters, puzzle games, or just crazy stuff like On the Ball, Cacoma Knight in Bizyland, Firestriker, Dolucky Puzzle Adventure '94, or who knows what else. The PS2 had some good variety as well, but due to the style of visuals that were popular at the time, there's a same-yness to the visuals of many games. The ones I gravitated to were the ones with more personality in the US- Chulip, Katamari Damacy, Under the Skin, Flipnic... or the shooters like Gradius V. For me, the PS2 is the third best Playstation even. I'll take the PS4 and PS1 both over it. All that said, everything is purely subjective. If we're keeping opinions out of it and just going with facts, the greatest would probably be the original PS3, just because it could play three generations of games. Tough to beat that bang for the buck... yet I play it less than most of my consoles.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks this lmao. I had a PS2 during its run and it was awesome for the time But I feel it's actually aged worse than the super Nintendo and the PlayStation 1 era due to the fact of games, haven't really changed much since the PS2 era. They've just been refined so PS2 games feel more dated in my opinion because they're missing quality of life features that we would expect now despite having amazing 3D graphics for the time I feel like the 6th generation games don't really have an identity compared to the snes and ps1 era also 2D games were dead during that generation So my pick would be the snes and ps1 :)

When I first saw Super Mario World at the Toys R Us kiosk, I was blown away. Going from 8-bit to 16-bit was such a huge leap. But the library of games still were all pixel art, so a lot of titles look the same. And outside of Nintendo first party titles, there wasn't a ton of quality. PS2 however is when the gaming industry was fully matured and had a lot more money to throw around. And if anyone remembers when you first saw and played games like Grand Theft Auto 3, it felt absolutely unlike anything you've seen before. Jak and Daxter had a seamless world to explore which we take for granted today, but at the time, not having a load screen every couple seconds was an amazing feat. MGS 2 & 3 were putting blockbuster action movies to shame. God of War was making developers across the world scratch their heads wondering how they made it. And Shadow of the Colossus (at the time) felt like a next gen title. The PS2 was just filled with gaming firsts, and so much of how we play games today was built way back on the PS2. That's why so many gamers who were alive at that time felt disappointed with both the PS3 and PS4 because that "first time, never seen it before" newness just wasn't there. It was all a shinier coat on the same ride. And you could argue the same for the SNES, a shinier coat on the same ride.

Ps2 was a time when developers could take a gamble on their projects. With ps3 and onward the cost of development meant companies couldnt take the risk. And as video games went mainstream that meant trying to cater to the largest audience so you get less of the quirky games. Indie games are usually really low budget and most were probably only released online.

I feel like the PS2 has so much games that appeal to me. The super Nintendo has good games like alttp, super metroid, and the final fantasy games (one of them being my favourite which is 5). But the ps2 has such a big library of games that are revolutionary like re4, shadow of the Colossus, the persona games and a lot more.
@Shishkebarbarian
@Shishkebarbarian Жыл бұрын
i'm personally of the opinion that it was the PS1. this is considering two of my top 3 games of all time are Mario World and Link to the Past. I think PS1 games where more unique, varied, revolutionary and there were more better ones than on any other console i can think of... save perhaps the Switch. The PS1 saw the best of the early-mid 90s 16bit era improved with 32bit horsepower while still using pixel art (which i love) while also bringing to the table a huge variety of 3D games over the course of time when 3D games went from experimental infancy to the status quo. this very unique dichotomy of imho 3 completely separate eras of gaming make the PS1 library the most interesting, to me. You have games like SotN, Suikoden II, Gunners Heaven, Panzer Bandit, Megaman X3-X6 & 8, In The Hunt, Metal Slug, all the Capcom fighting games, Valkyrie Profile, Little Ralph, and basically ever 2D RPG etc - which are basically SNES/Genesis era games given the full birth of benefits that came with the 'next gen'. Then you have early 3D games which were experimental as devs were trying to figure out how to use 3D to craft games - Jumping Flash, D, Descent, Crash Bandicoot, Ridge Racer etc - these games while may feel janky today, they offer a really unique experience and represent gameplay which is largely missing today and was very much a product of its time. And finally there are the games that came in the late 90s/2000, when 3D was the de facto format for games - THPS2, Metal Gear Solid, Medieval, Soul Reaver, Grant Turismo 2 (still the best GT, come at me) - games which have more in common with what you see made today than in the early-mid 90s, and they're still *fantastic.* Of course the cherry on top is that the PS1 library has *TONS* of great games, more so than SNES or PS2, and more "bangers", in more genres, visual styles and gameplay mechanics. Bonus Points: all the 2D SNES native genres which saw successful 2.5D or 3D iterations: Final Fantasy Tactics, Front Mission 3, Klonoa, Tomba, Harvest Moon, Raycrisis/Raystorm/Thunder Force V, Skullmonkeys. Bonus Points 2: all the goofy, innovative/experimental and just plain weird as shit the PSX got that you rarely see elsewhere: Rising Zan, LSD, Incredible Crisis, Intelligent Qube, Dreams, Baldies, Board Game Top Shop, Bushido Blade, 1 on 1, Geppy-X, Spider the Video Game, Tall Infinity, Parappa, RC de Go, Power Shovel.... and of course... the last of the FMV games. It also felt like the last time we had an established home console presence of puzzle games. Yeah my knowledge of the PSX library cuts *deep.* The PS2 sanitized, repackaged and streamlines the 3D gameplay that was born on the PS1 and lost something along the way. That doesn't mean that it didn't have incredible games, just that they were build on the established franchises and gameplay born on the PS1. The PS1 simply offers more... of everything, than any other console until you get to modern times with digitally available indies and old game ports. Of course, the PS2 plays PS1 games and has a DVD player so it's just a better buy as a console itself - that in itself elevates the PS2 to the top, but i feel like that's just cheating. Just my 2 cents.

I good "best console of all time“ pairing in my opinion is Wii vs NES. Both caused a massive surge in their respective times...with both bringing back major interest to the gaming industry. The NES bringing people back older gamers from the gaming crash and bringing newbies in who wanted to experience 8-bit gaming. And the Wii bringing back older gamers with the virtual console and the newbies in with its family-oriented nature. And I personally see the PS2 as the better console in my opinion. SNES gets my vote by a thin margin. The PS2 was a blast with an amazing library of long lost gems. Gran Truismo 3 A-Spec, Street Fighter 15th Anniversary Edition, Virtua Fighter 4: Evolutuon, Dark Cloud…. All so great along with so many others. Still, it can’t beat Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, Legend of Zelda: a Link to the Past, Duper Castlevania IV, Super Metroid, The Donkey Kong Country series, Super Mario World, Super Metroid… classics all. While neither would be the best consoles of all time, I would love to see a comparison between the Neo Geo ACS and the Sega Dreamcast. My first video games were in the pre-crash era. My most fondest memories of gaming as a kid was Colecovision, and my fondest as an adult was probably the Saturn. One was great at pre-crash arcade games. and the other was a mix of 2d and 3d 90s arcade games. The NES seemed alien to me. I was given a dpad, and I had nightmares of it being another Intellivision controller. Thankfully, I can lay it on the floor and use 2 handed typing to control the dpad. I could game for fun, but I felt like an athlete who went from dominating to not making the team once Nintendo had a cursade against right handed controls. Suddenly Nintendo became the reverse polo club. When Beeshu made ambidetrous joysticks, one ruling during the 90s FTC regulations on system gatekeepers were tightened to not allow a refusal of a licenses based on handedness, so Beeshu got their license for the Superstick and a couple other models. The Saturn was the first system where I didn't rely on a birthday present to get at full price. I also had an under the table deal of supplying a rental store Saturn games and made enough in 50% commission (my games, his store) where I averaged a new Saturn game a month in profits. And since he was the only indie rental store with Saturn in a 20 mile radius, almost no conpetition.

Also if you wanted to play the guitar hero games and DVD player. For me, NES/Famicom its the best console; even do, I think that you should better make a video about 4 vs 6 videogame console generation, instead PS2 vs SNES; that would be a very close discution among videogamers and videogame collectors. In my personal opinion, 4th generation is better because you have more consoles and console libraries to enjoy (besides, Nintendo was the king of home videogame market vs Sega which was giving the best competition of all time; for me was the best console war ever) = SNES, Sega Genesis, PC Engine, SharpX68000, Neo Geo AES, AND ARCADE GAMES (which best period of time was 1988 to 1995) !!! vs PS2, XBOX, GameCube and Sega Dreamcast !!!

In my opinion, the SNES and PS1 are the top two best consoles of all time. The reason I picked the PS1 over the PS2 is just the sheer number of new franchises that were born or reborn on the PS1, as well as the number of great games released for nearly every genre. Much of the same could be said about the PS2, but I would say there is more overlap between PS2 games and other 6th gen consoles, whereas the PS1 has a little more of a (then) exclusive line-up, even if many of its games also released on PC, N64, or Saturn.

I'll be honest here, it entirely depends on whether you prefer 2D or 3D gaming. Both reached their own peaks but it all comes to down to your style. I grew up in 3D era and I'm not much of a fan of 2D games in general so it's the PS2 for me. However, if we really want to get technical here, my vote would go for the fully backwards compatible PS3. Not only it has a full PS2 inside, it still supports PS1 games and even some PSP games. Just so people have an idea, that's like over 10k games.

Ah... questions I have already thought way too much about. For me... its the NES and the PS1 (not PS2) I tried not to make backwards compatibility to be a factor for fairness. While I am a huge 16bit era fan... bringing some truly amazing consoles... I think the NES / PS1 are special for me for personal reasons but also for cultural reasons. The NES had to get the first nod for me.... I'm almost 46 and the NES was such a big part of my childhood and the console that really cemented me as a video game fanatic... and while the Atari 2600 was my first console... NES was such a cultural shift and at the perfect age for me. NES was what our lives revolved around. If you met someone new, one of the first questions you would ask them after what their name was... was "what Nintendo games do you have and when can I come over to play them?". The NES has such a fleshed out library... introduced the era of rental video games and really was the console that saved Video Games from the crash of 1983 by doing everything differently from Atari (some of which was pretty shady, but hey... it worked). When I look at the NES's library of games, I can name about 250 games I played, loved and would want to own. Games I borrowed, rented and a few I owned. They created so many popular genres that perpetuate today. They absolutely dominated the 8bit era without a whole lot of competition. The next nod would have to be the Playstation 1. The PS1 is such and admirable success story. Fresh off the 16bit console wars that were long and bloody... we enter the 32bit era with familiar faces, an old face and a couple new faces we didn't know what to expect. This was the first generation that really made 3D the standard, as well as brought us nearly arcade perfect ports... which as a kid who wasted so many quarters on Arcades... could now play an arcade game to their hearts content for $3 all weekend. I remember seeing early renderings of Sony's new console, and I looked at the controller... and I remember thinking... "Wow, this new Sony controller is so gimmicky, who'd want to hold that??". Now today, its by far my favorite gamepad of all time. The Playstation had to go up against 1st and 2nd place of the 16bit era... two already well established companies that had their own IP's and market recognition. While everyone knew who Sony was... this was the first time they made a video game home console. They went in, stole Sega's thunder in a big way. While Nintendo loomed with their console... they stole the entire market. Saturn was all but an afterthought by the time the N64 dropped... and while it (N64) made a huge splash... and console sales were big... outside of Nintendo's original IP's... the console offered very few games that you could say were better than what PS1/Saturn was offering at the time. The cartridges were expensive, the capacity was smaller and that controller was no good for anything that wasn't 3D. The PS1 also lasted for such a long time, pumping out hundreds of great games... and for RPG fans has one of the largest and diverse libraries to offer. The PS1 was nothing short of a fairy tale story of a company new to the game... that did absolutely everything right, never misstepped and when they made it's successor... absolutely held its position as the home console company to beat. Super Nintendo for sure has about 4-5 of my top 10 games of all time... when you compare libraries to the Genesis... I don't like it better... but more the same. While if I had to pick one of to as being the best of 16bit... I'd have to go with the SNES... but not by much. The NES absolutely slaughters the Master System and later Atari consoles for the 8bit era. The PS1 absolutely slaughters the Saturn and the N64 for the 32bit era.. Thats why I picked those two.

ngl I love my PS2 with a burning passion, but it is true, it is the wakest console of its generation and if the game had a port on XBOX, PC or even GC those versions were superior, but there's something magical of this large box, that doubles as a DVD player, and if you got the OG one you can get the network adapter with a HDD link it up to your PC and stream backups, and ooh boy, when it come to exclusives, those were some of the best games that defined a generation, maybe all this affection comes from the fact I was very little when the PS2 came and my parents won't but me one so I got a little of a fixation with it but regardless, the PS2 is great and the 6th gen of consoles as a whole was awesome

Honestly for me, I enjoy older 3d games more than 2d games, but that doesn't mean I don't like them. The 6th and seventh generation of games are my favorites. My favorite console is the Original Xbox, and I just like the look and feel of old 3d graphics. Even if they are outdated, it adds more charm to the game and makes me feel welcome.

I was a teen for SNES and in my 20’s for PS2, and I think they are the two clear front runners for this conversation, but what this made me consider was how much N64 was a bridge between between these two consoles for me. I loved SNES for its refined 2D gameplay, visuals, sound, variety, etc… but was not a fan of the PS1. Most games felt clunky and the graphics felt like a step backwards somehow. The N64 made 3D gaming enjoyable for me and really made the refinement of the PS2 easier to appreciate. Something that I think is a under appreciated about both is how, due partly to technical limitations and partly to game design experience, objects, enemies, and interactive pieces of the game were very clearly delineated from scenery. The lack of nuance actually made the games less confusing. While that nuance can be executed well, especially in modern games, it’s often misused and detracts from the game play experience. With textures, NPC’s, and worlds being more homogeneous, it can be difficult to make a distinction between what is significant and what isn’t. In the end, the SNES stands out because it was the pinnacle of 2D gaming, which makes its replayability more enjoyable after the fact. Most great PS2 games now have successor games that largely keep the same experience but with much further refinement, making it less enjoyable to go back and play. For example, it’s hard to go back and play GTA3 when GTA4 and GTA5 are so similar but so much better, but it’s incredibly difficult to find a more modern version of SMW or ALTTP that are better than those games.

To me the N64 through the P2 was the darkest ugliest era in gaming. I missed 2D hand drawn games so much. I wish i knew about the Japanese Sega Saturn at the time but I played very select games during that period. I think at this point though if I’m being honest with myself the Switch may be the greatest console ever. The mix of old, new, aaa, indie, 2D, etc…with physical games not yet ruined by DRM…I think it’s shaping up up the be the final true physical system and it’s going to leave a mark.

I’m not necessarily saying that the Super Nintendo is better than the SONY PlayStation 2, but I have greater memories/experiences with the SNES versus the PS2. For the SNES, games like Final Fantasy III (FFVI), Secret of Mana, Super Metroid, Super Punchout!, Super Mario World, Contra III: The Alien Wars, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 4: Turtles In Time, Super Mario Kart, Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers, Disney Mickey Mouse: The Magical Quest, and Super Double Dragon, and The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past are still some of the greatest games to play. The PS2 has better graphics in most cases, but the games I have the most memory of is far less when compared to the SNES; Devil May Cry, God of War, God of War II, Marvel vs CAPCOM, The Bouncer, Sly Cooper, Ratchet & Clank, Shadow of Colossus and three or four more games I can’t remember right now.

Even though i've recently discoverd and fell in love with snes (i knew of it's existence but hasn't played many games on it), this one is actually an easy pick for me - PS2 is my all time favourite console, SNES would be third or fourth (xbox 360 is second, and i'm not sure about GBA placemnet). All that being said SNES aged gracefully, kinda like ps2 - both mastered a period in gaming (snes pixelart, ps2 pre-hd 3d), both in terms of visuals (stable and rich 2d for snes and the same in 3d for ps2), and in terms of fully realized potential in gameplay mechanics. Btw. laugh at me but i love snes launch lineup, Pilotwings and F-Zero are among my favourite games. Especialy Pilotwings. And F-Zero was slightly overtaken for me by F-Zero GP Legend on GBA - what a great game that is!!
