Søren Kierkegaard was a profound and prolific 19th century writer and philosopher in the Danish Golden Age of intellectual and artistic activity. He wrote about how we choose to live and what it means to be alive, centred in the individual or “existing being”. He is regarded as the father of Existentialism. The stress of subjectivity is one of Kierkegaard’s main contributions.
His concept of anxiety or angst is one of the most profound pre-Freudian works of psychology. His most popular work includes the leap of faith, the concept of angst, the three stages on life (aesthetic, ethical, religious), among others.

@@RoyArrowood Well, I think that your emotional capacity for handling such situations is excellent, and whilst you might be unremorseful about occuring things, others might be, and sometimes they even wish to get the opportunity and redo things again. What's done is done, yes. But when you really think about it, there are really times when we truly wish we could've done so much better than we would've, or revert things to its past form.

20:04 “Life is not a problem to be solved, but a reality to be experienced.” That struck an inner chord, it's so true. We tend to overthink so much about solving and solving and that causes anxiety, sometimes the smallest of things can bring the highest of happiness, experiencing life, for what is the purpose of living a life that one does not even live...

I broke off an engagement at the start of this year, it was a very painful experience for all parties involved. I was on a path of self realisation before the relationship started and was really coming into myself and regaining a love for life after years of suicidal ideation and stagnation. She was very loving and offered a situation where I could live comfortably from a monetary standpoint, something I have never had after a turbulent family life and spending my whole adult life in debt. This past 6 months I have never been worse off financially, working at a fast food restaurant to barely cover my rent, choosing between paying bills or buying food, but every day I spend the majority of my time with philosophical enquiry and have been learning art fundamentals to produce something of my own, to try and represent somewhat that which exists in my mind and I have never felt more at one with myself and the world around me. I am not in my youth anymore, and I will likely spend the rest of my life by myself. I cannot justify any of my actions, and I am not a responsible person who can offer any security or likely have the resources for a family situation. I have made the decision that I will give my all to realising my true nature, even if it kills me. I have already resigned to being a normal human being, I wish to be nothing, but know I must first become something. Probably too much of my personal information has been shared within this, but that is not something that bothers me. I just want you to know how much your videos and explanations of ideas has helped me. Thank you for creating this content

So the issue in my university was that they treated Sartre and Thoreau as if they were the fathers of existentialism. One of my professors clearly had a thing for Thoreau as we spent about three weeks on him alone which felt... heavy handed. We were taught that Kierkegaard was -the- father of existentialism but then they barely taught him at all. Moved right on to Sartre.

I really like the way you capture Kierkegaard's ideas. I do want to point out that in the story of Abraham and Isaac, Abraham does not kill Isaac. God provides an animal rustling in the bush and Abraham takes that as a sign from God not to sacrifice his son, but to sacrifice an animal instead. But you were right in noting that this was a battle between ethics and faith (or as you say "religion"). Because the dilemma was choosing between Abraham's own son's life and his love for God.

"Life is not a problem to be solved, but a reality to be experienced". I had heard the phrase before. It's in Dune, by Frank Herbert. I don't recall who says it but, in the 2021 movie, it's Jamis who says this to Paul Atreides in a dream. So Frank Herbert was fond of Kierkegaard. Or at least familiar with his philosophy. Not surprising given how introspective the Dune saga is. How wonderful! PS: Dune. Highly recommended.

No worries will keep making this type of content! Thanks for the remarks, I definitely notice it more in some of my videos, hence why I make subtitles for all. I need to learn to vocalise better!! (work in progress). Welcome to the channel! :)

Like many philosophers, he might have been diagnosed with non stereotypical high functioning autism. His existentialism and hyper empathy and his challenges in the social are further confirming that. The autism spectrum is so wide today, I think the majority of people are, but especially those gifted and challenged.

The one thing I’ve never agreed with anyone about is the idea that immortality would somehow be a bad thing. It’s not like I haven’t thought about it, or haven’t heard the arguments against it. I just feel that I would enjoy every moment the way I enjoy every moment of my current mortal existence. I guess the idea of getting stuck somewhere like in a mudslide would be terrifying. But eventually you’d just go insane and hallucinate a new existence like a brain in a jar situation. The sun swallowing the earth would be hard to deal with if you couldn’t get away in time. Floating in the nothingness after the cold death of the universe with a bunch of black holes would be boring, but I feel like I’d have more than enough time to create an ark. People are like, “you’d live through the death of everyone you know”. But I’ve lost enough people to know that you always get over it. Can someone tell me what I’m missing? Also, if immortality is so terrifying to people, why is it the endgame for so many religions? Also, if I woke up tomorrow with immortality, invincibility, and was the only person on earth, I would NEVER get bored.

This is a good video on the pseudonymous works discussed, but would probably be a lot stronger with the addition of Kierkegaard's signed works. The quotation from Either/Or (18:30-19:00) really needs clarification as not being Kierkegaard's own view (it is B paraphrasing A); Kierkegaard would not say that the authentic Christian would regret having faith, because the authentic Christian would not have the "care" of things in the world due to his devotion to God (the eternal): “Alas, for the person who loves the world in the sagacious sense of the moment, the eternal is a riddle. He is continually thinking: But if some temporal help suddenly turned up, I would indeed be deceived, I who in the decision of eternity was dead to temporality. This means that one still regards the temporal as the highest and the eternal as a kind of desperate standby. Therefore one postpones the decision as long as possible; and even if temporality’s help is the most unreasonable of all expectations, goaded on in superstitious delusion one would rather hope for it than grasp the eternal. There is the continual fear that one would come to regret this, and yet the eternal, if one grasps it in truth, is the only, unconditionally the only thing of which one may unconditionally say: It is never regretted. But if a person feared that he would at some time regret the decision of the eternal, it serves him right that he at some time must regret bitterly that he let time go by" ("Purity of Heart is to Will One Thing" from Upbuilding Discourses in Various Spirits, Hong translation, p. 114). (See also the first part of Christian Discourses, "The Cares of the Pagans"). And there is in this video, as always in videos about Kierkegaard, a lack of attention given to joy and other positive qualities in Kierkegaard's work. (See especially the second part of Christian Discourses, "States of Mind in the Strife of Suffering"): “the rich Christian is able to have joy from his earthly wealth, joy every time he is granted opportunity to do something good with his wealth, that he can do another person a service and that he at the same time can serve his God” (CD, 32). “This is also why the Christian, free from care, is never indecisive-he has faith; never vacillating-he is eternally resolved; never disconsolate-he is always joyous, always giving thanks" (CD, 85). “Hardship procures hope. It does not give hope, but it procures it. It is the person himself who acquires it, eternity’s hope, which is planted in him, hidden in his innermost being; but hardship procures it” (CD, 110). To me the most joyous part of Kierkegaard's whole authorship is his emphasis on the personal responsibility and how everyone, categorically everyone, is able to have faith, e.g.: "Ordinarily everyone who lives in Christendom has unconditionally enough knowledge about Christianity to be able to invoke and supplicate, to be able to turn in prayer to Christ. If he does that with the need of inwardness and in honesty of heart, he surely will become a believer. If only it is altogether definite before God that this person feels the need to believe, he will very definitely find out what he is to believe. The opposite is: without a need to believe, to go on researching, ruminating, and pondering, more and more wanting nigglingly to waste year after year of one’s life, and finally one’s eternal salvation, on getting absolutely and precisely definite, down to a dot over a letter, what one is to believe. This opposite is empty shadowboxing that merely becomes more and more self-important, or it is a scholarly, learned practice in the wrong place, therefore a scholarly, learned malpractice, or it is cowardly, inhuman, and to that extent also ungodly pusillanimity” (CD, 245-246). Very good video though. I see that you have other Kierkegaard videos on your channel but they all seem to relate to the pseudonymous works. I hope that if you continue making them in the future you might consider his very under-read and astonishingly beautiful and insightful signed works, especially his Discourses and Works of Love. Though the pseudonymous works get all the attention, there is much in the signed works even for those who read Kierkegaard primarily for psychological or aesthetic understanding; he is always attentive to our relationships with the world, including the ways in which we fail to live up to what we ought to become: “it holds true here, as in all these discourses, that everything depends on how the relationship is viewed” (CD, 126).

What I really lack is To be clear in my mind What am I to do, Not what I must know. The chief task of life is to become an individual and I can only become an individual by action and decision. I sacrifice my self for my profession, My wife, My children, Or, more properly expressed, I do not sacrifice my self for them, But I find in them My satisfaction and joy. What I am through her She is through me. Neither of us is anything by oneself; We are what we are In union. That is why friends are dangerous; Especially spouses. Das biggest danger is that of losing oneself. To have a self, To be a self, Is das greateste concession made to mankind, And at the same time, It is eternity’s demand upon him. Every call from god is always addressed to 1 single person- de individual. Therefore, de 1 who is called Must stand alone, Walk alone, Sit alone, Sleep alone, Alone with god. God is in us- The author of our dreams.
