FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER - NEXZR is now translated with English Subtitles! Thanks to the awesome WLTR3565 for the translation work and assistance. You can now enjoy the excellent story and cut scenes and see what you were missing.
Nexzr is a mix of Soldier Blade and IREM's Image Fight with a healthy does of that late 80s and early 90s vibe, especially the music. The art design takes cues from Gundam and the storyline is well done and emotional. It's a complete package of precise gameplay, impressive presentation, and phenomenal music. Nexzr also includes Caravan high score and time attack modes for extra replay value. It's not only a hidden gem on the PC Engine, but one of the Greatest Shoot Em Ups of All Time.

20:11 - Epilogue: NEXZR; More than the sum of it's parts

In future episodes of Greatest Shooters of All Time, I will continue to look at some of my favorites, from the NES (Famicom), to the Mega Drive and Super Nintendo, to the Neo Geo, Saturn, and even Arcades. And of course, more PC Engine. I will also try to highlight lesser known, must play shmups for those that may have missed them the first time around.

@Shmup Junkie, I am convinced that you do not know what the fuck that you are talking about on a lot of observations of this game. Yes, it is certainly a solid vertical shooter, as well as has a good story that also makes logical sense, but it certainly is not as deep as Star Wars or the vast majority of the Mobile Suit Gundam franchise, let alone as timeless as the works of Shakespeare, or any other epic poems and their authors, but the thing is that other horizontal/side-scrolling and vertical shooters did many of the things that this game did and they also did them better as well. I can name tons of instances where that is being true as well, so I can indeed back up my claims.

Not sure if this has been mentioned already but the voice actor for the antagonist is Shuichi Ikeda, who voiced Char in Mobile Suit Gundam. Ikeda was one of the most well known voice actors at the time. The fact that Naxat got him onboard really shows how much resources they put into this game back then. They don’t make ‘em like this anymore folks

The English subtitles were awesome, thanks! Please do more “greatest“ videos like this! I know it’s super cliché but you should totally do a top 10 shooters list (your personal top 10). We seem to like those same older Compile-style vertical shooters (and this vid proved it, I’m sold on Nexzr!). Or better yet, split your top 10 into 10 videos and give each one the full treatment you did in this video! Now that’d be an awesome series!

Thank our friend for the awesome translation work on this. I was excited to learn the dialogue and incorporate it into the video. Only wish we could get a hack where it actually has it worked into the rom file to play. I will likely do more like this too yeah, at least for certain games that are special to me. Nexzr is also not very well known so I thought it deserved a good highlight like this. Hopefully it'll get discovered a little more over time. It's such an amazing game.

Badass video as always, a well deserved homage to Nexzr. Since I played it back in 2010 or so I didn't knew too much about it, just played it. At first it was a little hard, but then I started to understand how it works, Nexzr gives you all you need, it's all about the player to discover the best way to conquer each stage. No need to move a lot to dodge but to know when you have to. The music is on every of my devices and playlists, Damn good stuff.

Thanks man! I definitely knew you would enjoy this vid and you nailed it on the gameplay. It looks like it would be a twitch shooter like Soldier Blade but it's much more methodically paced and takes some memorization. It's just designed so masterfully where you don't need any special tricks to get through it. Once you have it figured out it's not super hard to get through and so much fun. Damn I love the music in this game. 🔥

Lucky enough to own a copy. The summer carnival games were holy grails even before the market went completely terrible for buyers, and I count myself super fortunate to have this one. I'm hoping that ODE tech for the duo, or an all purpose HU-Card that can run CD games might be possible, since there's a lot of great games on the PC-E, and all owners deserve the right to preserve their collections and check out of the market. Even if that day comes, I hope there's a solution that can do both; playing the library from solid state media, and allowing one to play their hardcopy games as well.
@ShmupJunkie
@ShmupJunkie 3 жыл бұрын
Awesome you have this one too it's gotten up there indeed. And if I could only have 5 shooters on the PC Engine with actual media this would be one of them. The new analogue Duo coming seems like the ticket for playing physical copies or using a flash cart like their other devices. Only downside is it will be limited so eventually no longer available to many. Then there's the Mister that'll play them pretty flawlessly and on a CRT even, but no physicals and it's expensive.

What a fantastic and fun looking game. That opening space battle level looked epic, with those big ships seemingly teleporting in your face. What I liked about the levels you showed, is that there is a clear distinction between what is the level boundary, where you can freely move, what the enemies and bullets are. The action does not get obstructed as I often find the case in shooters with busy scrolling background layers, or those fancy looking scrolling foreground layers that you can pretty much play hide and seek behind. Great video again, where your passion for these games really comers through, making them a joy to watch!
@ShmupJunkie

Absolutely right on that. Everything here is in service of the gameplay and refined to a point where there isn't much to complain about. This game is the absence of missteps and design flaws it's just made so well. And all the awesome music and cool presentation is the icing on the cake. It's one of those rare pc engine gems that I encourage anyone to download on an emulator and try. It's not the easiest game so not everyone will make a ton of progress, but even that awesome first opening stage is worth downloading for that alone.

Wow, thank you very much for this video about this great forgotten shoot'em up. There are so many great shoot'em ups on the PC Engine, hard to say if it is really one of the best . I would put it in my top 10 but not my top 5. However I must say that the music on this one is incredible, my favorite of any games on the PC Engine, maybe on all 16 bit consoles. It is so epic and melancholic at the same time. I cried the first time I played the second level because of the music, it is so beautiful, so epic and so melancholic... I think this game deserves to be redicovered only for the music although the other parts of the game are quite good.

I love almost everything about the game, it all comes together perfect for me. The music especially is of course amazing and makes any shooter that much better. It seems to fit perfect with the style of the game. This game will forever be pretty obscure unless M2 decides to release a collection with a few Naxat games that also deserve more attention like Recca and Alzadick which was a cool caravan stage. Maybe along with Spriggan that would make a nice small collection. Not holding my breath though. The Stage 6 music on this game is one I personally love.

Thank you my friend. I always do some searching before making a vid to see I am not just rehashing already good content and focusing on something that is lacking. To my surprise there is next to nothing on Nexzr! No good reviews, just some longplays, absolutely nothing that gives it the treatment it deserves. Bithead had a cool and fun rant on it a while back, but it's kind of hidden in the video and not something that comes up with a Nexzr search. I just happened to have seen it a while back. fantastic video... and seeing "Do You Remember Love?" -era Macross discussed amongst the greatest stories told, along with NEXZR's great sprite work, effects, music AND story ( i really appreciate the work to translate it) warmed my cold, dead heart... to say the least, it was pure "proto- culture" for this "micro human".... also, even if limited, i always loved when 16 bit shooters would give me some story because it made it feel like the developers cared about it as a "world" and not just a product... hell, as simple as they were, part of the reason i love games like Gaiares, Trouble Shooter, Gley Lancer ( eng translation patch), Phelios, Elemental Master, and much more is the little touches of story...thanks to you and WLTR3565 for the great work...

The Super CD provides no added benefits outside of some more ram (snf that's due to the SCD cart itself). For all intents and purposes, the CDRom games are just one big cart, there are no special chips in the CD Portion of the PCE CD systems (Unlike, for example, the Mega CD). Great vid! I recently 1cc'd the game on Normal and felt that checkpoint recovery was very manageable even in the more difficult stages ( stage 4). When I looked into scoring for the main game, the main issue is that it mostly comes from select checkpoint milking ( either from high-value enemies+ suicide or kill boss & suicide), but i guess that where you'd invest more time into the caravan mode. I might try for a Hard 1CC at some point; it doesn't seem like its much more difficult in the vein of going from a Solider Blade Normal 1cc to a Blade Hard 1cc.

yes the checkpoints are extremely well placed and fair in Nexzr, just another example of great design all around. I don't think the main game is ideal overall for score though it is there, as back then scoring was more relegated to the caravan modes like you said. I never actually paid attention or tried for score on the main game it was just there, but that's more me than anything else. The very hardest setting on Nexzr is truly brutal I have never beaten that setting, but HARD mode is a fair step up without adding suicide bullets.

Before people really liked the videos and I just kept going. So if you’re looking for pc engine love, despite them being my first so my production isn’t as good as now, you’ll really enjoy them. Specifically my second called the shooter crackpipe where I focus on the caravan games, I talk about how I was able to get my turbo cd, as there’s no way we could’ve afforded one either. You may not be thrilled with how I got it cause I didn’t have to kill myself mowing lawns, it was honestly dumb luck and being at the right place at the right time. I only wish I’d kept that massive box that’s now worth a small fortune 🤦‍♂️

Same here. If I can ever get someone that knows how to do this I certainly would. In this case there isn't a ton of work so you'd think it wouldn't be too bad to do. At least versus a text heavy game.

It's very cool. You would immediately tell based on how the game feels to play and the patterns that it was made by a team that knows their shmups and what makes a good one. It just has the "feel" in how it controls and how stages and enemy patterns attack you. Well thought out is the way I would put it. It's fun to learn and similar to Image Fight in that way, just not as ridiculously difficult.

I downloaded a rom set for TG16 and this wasnt in the set because its a CD title. I'm having to find out and acquire those individually. Anyway Im glad I did, that's three really good TG16 CD games Ive played now... Air Zonk, Castlevania Rondo of Blood, and NEXZR now!

A cool tidbit is that the CD library for the pc engine was even larger and more popular than the hucard games. Possibly even double the size with many hundreds of games. So yeah if you’re not exploring that side you’re really missing out on the system’s best. Really glad you found a way to grab them. In that massive 3+ hour video I did with every pc engine shooter reviewed you can see how many were CD and SuperCD games. It’s pretty wild. Nexzr is one of my all time favs’

I've somehow never seen this before - at least in any detail, it's flashed by me in montage videos. Given that '93 was the TG-16's make or break year in the West, it's a shame they didn't peg this one for localization.

A lot of people haven't which is why I wanted to highlight it. And it deserves it as it's top tier in just about every way. Given it arrived around Lords of Thunder days I'm not sure why it never made it to the US. Another reason it died a slow death here with the lack of the best titles making it over. If you ask any PC Engine fan what their favorite shooters on the system are, just about every one will have this in their Top 5.

@ShmupJunkie
@ShmupJunkie 3 жыл бұрын
Top 3 for shooters 🤔. Depending on which ones you’ve played so far, as exclusives you can only play on the pc engine I would say Soldier Blade is an absolute must at number 1. Lords of Thunder if you haven’t already. Gradius 2 is in my top 3 but you can also play that on Saturn. So for exclusives Gate of Thunder is another great one. If you like thunder force you’d enjoy that too.

Retroarch makes it easier to save certain spots and show certain things. But it’s a nice image either way. I use an ossc into my capture card so hardware always looks great.

Go for the Special version with the caravan mode if you like the score attacks. The cover is very simple, but you get more value with the game and caravan mode. You just lose the story scenes. It's also much less expensive than the main release.

Next time we do one you are welcome to join. You may be surprised how fun it can be. I don’t like playing score attacks alone it doesn’t keep my interest either. So glad to see someone covered this game after my first time I played back in 2008, thanks for youtube recommendations for my passion of shmups, probably because I watched Gradius, Salamander, and many other shooters from long time ago. Man, I felt in love with the soundtrack! Glad to hear it from the disc itself from the game, and pop it in my hifi stereo, it feels like a shonen anime shmup game, never beat it without dying, but glad to get to this game in an early age! However, for some reason, in the Nexzr Special disc, despite not having the opening cutscene in the game, but it still remains in the game files as unusable file

Apparently it's very Gundam inspired which I can tell from the designs, but I learned after this video that they used actual voice actors from Gundam for multiple roles in this game. They really went all out. I hope you enjoy this one when you pick it up as it's one heck of a fun game in my opinion. It's as classic 90s shooter as it gets and I love the 80s electronica sound to many of the tracks.

great video dude, does anyone have advice on burning discs for the Turbo Duo, its hard to find CD burners that burn at slow speeds nowadays
@ShmupJunkie
@ShmupJunkie 3 жыл бұрын
Yes burning them is hit and miss. A slow speed 4x process and certain brands CD work best while cheap ones don’t or wear out the laser over time until you have to replace it. Some people adjust the pots and it reads but still wears out the laser eventually. And not every Duo is the same depending on your unit. In the end you go through some headache that finally seems to work well for your unit and stick with it. And just know there’s a chance you’ll need to replace the laser at some point.
