Over the summer of 2018, I built this new firewood shed for a more convenient spot to access some of my wood during the coldest winter days. Inspired by many designs I saw online, this is my version of an 8'x4' firewood shed.

We built your shed last weekend on the Oregon coast lot we have. Took us three days, working only about 5 hours each day. The materials here in southern Oregon cost $414.43. It looks so good on our land and we love it! thanks for your help.

It is excellent, the aesthetics are very nice; I have been looking for a design like this with the details you have provided, for some time; my ideas always led me back to custom sawmill pieces for that aesthetic, and your unsanded pickets are exactly what your design needed. Great work!

Very Nice! Only suggestion I would have to viewers is to caution against storing wood next to your house. Wood storage is notorious for attracting termites & carpenter ants, and with it being so close to your house you are at risk of those buggers making the short trip over to the house. I've built these a few times & they are always out a way from the house. Again, nice build.

@GreatLakesPrepping
@GreatLakesPrepping 2 жыл бұрын
I've never had any issue with rain dripping on the wood. The roof overhangs covers enough that it just drips to the ground. This could certainly be made to slant back instead of forward, but I haven't really observed any downsides with the way I did it.

I'm afraid I don't have an exact list. It's been a long time since I built this and I don't think I have any of my specs or plans anymore. This design is pretty adaptable to the size you want, though. I built it with the standard lumber lengths in mind (8 foot long). If you base all your measurements on a footprint of 8ft x 4ft for the floor, you should be able to figure the rest out fairly easily.

@GreatLakesPrepping

Not really. If rain is blowing sideways, any open shed is gonna allow some water in. Getting a little damp every once in awhile won't hurt the firewood. But really, it stays bone dry 99% of the time.

I live in Montana and have never heard of something called a face cord. In our wood stove we burn 5 cords a winter unless it's really cold. Our winter lasts 6 months-we're up by the Canadian border at 4K ft. I burn wood every month except for 6 weeks in July/August. So, is a face cord a lot bigger than a cord? Thanks
@GreatLakesPrepping
@GreatLakesPrepping 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Carol, a face cord is smaller. It's sort of like if you had a cord, and just took the first "row" of wood. It's about 1/3 of a full cord.

Not really, I guess for 2 reasons. One, I'd rather have the water run further away from the house. And two, I like the way this looks better. Hasn't been a problem so far though. If I'm out there in the rain, I'll be wet anyhow.
@jesushatesyoutoo
@jesushatesyoutoo 5 жыл бұрын
I agree with you Ducan, plus the majority of the of the photos he showed up of other shed had the rood slopping back. Structurally, I found a lot of things wrong with the build. No lag screws were used, no joist hangers, his corner posts should have been 4x4 running from the foundation blocks and the deck framed to them. That wood is heavier than it looks. It looks nice now but it won't last too many seasons.

What's the reason for sloping the roof on the front and not sloping to the rear as I've noticed on all the video projects...just thinking it will be less wet at the front to pick up the logs
@GreatLakesPrepping
@GreatLakesPrepping 5 жыл бұрын
Others have asked this as well. You're right, most similar sheds seem to slope back. I think mine was partially oversight. When I drew up the plans for it, I just made it this way mostly without thinking about which way it sloped. But I ended up glad I did it that way. Since this shed is pretty close to my house, I'd rather the water run a bit further away from it. And it generally isn't raining when I go out there to get wood. If it was, I'd be wet anyway!

I think the front posts are 6' and the back posts are 7'. I can't remember 100% for sure, but I do recall that there is a 1-foot difference in height between front and back. You can go however tall you want, overall. I made it tall enough for me to stand in (which I really only did during construction).

Did you have to remove the entire structure to lay down the landscape fabric and gravel since it was done after most of the structure was built?
@GreatLakesPrepping
@GreatLakesPrepping 5 жыл бұрын
No, I only put the fabric down around the outside. I'd already filled the area beneath with gravel, and I didn't think of doing the fabric until it was too late. I'm hoping that the gravel and lack of sunlight/rain from the structure will keep weeds from growing under there. Time will tell, but so far so good and weed season has arrived.
