My plane is in the shop for the upgrades with AV30 and AV20 for backup. Can’t wait to start flying with these instruments! Thank you for the simple and clear review of the instruments. These days it is very rare when a KZbinr goes straight to the point without waiting time. Thank you!!

How do you control the transponder feature?

The AV30 has the transponder feature. The AV20 can't control the transponder.

I have an AV-20S in my Aeronca Sedan. I haven't gotten the angle of attack to work yet. All of the other functions are working, but the AOA was my reason for wanting it. Hopefully, I will be able to debug the problem. I didn't install the outside temperature probe, so some of the functions are not available. I may put that in eventually.

Did you set the level attitude of the aircraft? This needs to be done in flight in a taildragger or with the tail jacked up so the aircraft is level. Also did you go up and do the stall series so you can set the upper limit and cruise angke in the AV20? Without those limits set correctly it will not give a proper AOA. This process can be done with one quick flight andrea the information in the AV20 is straight forward to find and enter.

@@GreatMichiganBushCo I went up with the intent of doing stalls so I could set my limits, but it wasn't registering AOA at all. My only flight since then was my flight review which had many other tasks on the agenda. I'm continuing to work on getting it setup. BTW - I fly out on Linden (9G2). I have flown into Troy several times.

Depending on the default limits in the AV20 you might not get any angle of attack information. I would said it level in flight, then you could put the level flight AOA setting at zero and set your stall AOA at 12 and then it probably will give you some sort of information. when she do your stalls and properly calibrate it Will give you some good information. Ive probably seen your sedan at Troy. I've seen a green and tan sedan I've also seen a maroon and tan sedan. Very few classic tail wheels go in and out of there without me noticing.

I have the AV-20 working correctly now. Both the upper and lower AOA limits are negative numbers because the zero point was set with the tail on the ground. But, the absolute numbers don't matter much. The bars display at the correct times. I just watched your AV-30 review. Now I want that! Even though there is a lot of overlap between what the two instruments are capable of displaying, having both would reduce the screen switching.

YES, you'd think because it is built to satisfy ADSB, there'd be more videos ilulstrating what I think will be a more difficult and time consuming task... setting the xponder code.

How accurate do you feel the AOA is on the AV20? How does it differentiate between a clean wing and partial or full flaps? Looking at adding one to a PA28-140 for backup/assurance going into shorter strips.

It's all right. It's better for landing than takeoff. On take off I noticed as I start to turn left it will sometimes show up very high angle of attack. On landing and don't see that problem. The angle of attack on the AV30 does seem to be much better. I was able to really develop a good approach speed and power/deck angle using the AV20 AOA. Also that the AOA will pop up during high angle of attack situations is an attention getter and I like it.

Can we use it for optimum range. That means is the indication detailed enough in the low AOA reagion.

The AV30 seems to work better in that regime.

AWESOME review. Big question for us hopefully future Stinson owners: what was your total cost including install, and were there any unexpected hoops to jump through for the install?

It was around $1000 with instruments and parts (I needed to purchase some fittings for the pilot static installation and the temperature probe) The install was a couple hours once the parts were all in hand. I was all in for a little over $1100. Under the NORSEE policy the paperwork was easy, no hoops.

If I had an AV-30C I'd make a review video for it. At some point that just may happen I a considering purchasing two and removing the vacuum system.

@@GreatMichiganBushCo That's what id eventually do if I wanted to fly a classic antique and still want to cross country reliability. I thought this was very informative, seems better than the stuff out they had when they were aerovonic

How does it caculate angle of attack??

It uses accelerometers and gyroscopes. Using these it know what direction the aircraft is moving and the pitch angle, this gives the angle of attack.
