In this video I will be having a closer look at the cheapest street-legal E-Scooter I could find on the Internet. It is called the eScooter Street One from Aldi and I will not only tell you my personal opinion about it but I will also upgrade some of its electrical features. That means I will try to increase its speed, range, charge up time and also change the fact that the lights require their own little batteries. Let's get started!

@@VincentFischer The lamp probably has a resistor already, since it runs off 3 AAA or AA cells. 3 x 1.5V = 4.5V, while the forward voltage of a typical white LED is 3V. Besides, dropping 42V to 4.5V via resistors is so inefficient that it might as well be a war crime. Typical cheap buck converters are a couple $ a piece, and are typically 80-85% efficient (depending on the voltage and current).

You might also have been able to get more efficiency out of replacing the controller and thus increased range that way and you could have used a buck converter to bump the voltage down. if you put more battery on in series. A boost circuit might let him burn the battery lower than normal and get more speed.

The hell you talking about “bumping voltage up” is perfectly fine. You’re missing the part where he mentioned the buck converter - those only reduce voltage

@@signalworks if he wired the two packs in series a buck converter could be used to output 36v-72v he could set a range lets say 42v-36v above 44v i would imagine the motor would be getting hot if not hitting its limit they will suffer only so much over voltage. The other thing i was thinking rolling his own battery off 18650 it looked like there was almost room for 2 packs extending it by say 2 more banks of 6 cells to make it a 44v pack vs 36v. To run the lights he just needed to run a voltage regulator that will drop the tail to 3v the headlight seemed to run at 4.5v imho better off stripping out for a 12v system. And a regulator to take 36-72v and put out 12v the head light and tail lights would output serious light then...

Yes very inefficient too. Im surprised, hes normally good at this stuff. How many watts do I need to dissipate= how many resistors I need to put in parallel seemed to be the main calculation here.
@greatscottlab
@greatscottlab 4 жыл бұрын
It is a simple and sufficient solution. A buck converter would have drawn standby current which would have drained the battery. The resistors waste around 4W of power which sounds like a lot but when you keep in mind that the scooter drains a 154Wh battery in an hour then the 4Wh for the resistors are pretty much irrelevant. But sure, you can use a buck converter if you want.

Man, I'm sorry to hear that Germany has such scooter laws. If I were you, I would have bought a Xiaomi M365 though, even if it isn't technically street legal (would people really notice?). It probably has larger tires (8.5 inches, which you can upgrade to 10 with little modifications), has a higher range, and a top speed of 15 mph, or 24 km/h, which can be easily increased with a custom firmware up to 35 km/h.

I was lucky enough that i found with a friend an elecric scooter in e-waste It had its rear tire and rear disc brake damaged and batteries were really low After repairs it was running like new and now comes the fun part We are making some upgrades which are mainly: better torque(achieved by simply tinkering with controller), higher speed (getting a new sprocket for the rear wheel) and better range (getting a new set of batteries). But we need to stay somewhat "legal" (atleast here in Slovakia) so there is an switch for slow mode and fast mode.

another way to overcome the top speed, which is often cheaper is to swap in a motor rated for slightly less voltage .. SO if this was a 36 v configuration , a 24 v motor of similar spec would make the top speed 27kph or so.. and the battery and controller could remain stock

i know how i got this idea late but it would make a cool video if you used a VESC with Field Weakening on this escooter to demonstrate that VESC's can defeat the max RPM by voltage, basically by sorta defeating the BEMF and thus increasing the max rpm aswell a newer VESC6 or one with 3 phase shunts atleast can also do Silent HFI, which is silent brushless and sensorless drive it NEEDS a shunt on each phase to be able to do Silent HFI though, otherwise there will be a high pitch. you can try HFI on older Vesc's aswell but it wont be silent be sure to turn off phase filtering on older vescs on new firmware aswel

I got the street-legal Doc Green ESA 5000 from Lidl in Germany for 300 Euro on Black Friday last year. It does not require batteries for the lights, the range is 22km, the motor is 350W and the bigger battery helps to maintain 20km/h even with a small charge left. The other good thing is that the chassis is an exact copy of the M365 and a lot of accessories are cheaply available from China. It is not perfect tho, the battery indicator is not connected to the BMS and thus is a simple voltage display that does not work well with the voltage sag that the scooter experiences under load and also does not have suspension nor pneumatic tires. There is another version that is basically identical, it is called ESA 1919 and you can currently buy it for around 350 Euro and I still think it's worth the 70 EUR over the Maginon Street One.

wouldn't be a buck converter better solution than a resistor network? I mean less heat in the electronics compartment, longer battery life and stable voltage regardless of battery charge. Also you could still overclock your speed if you connect pack with higer as an external source and if you used buck converter you wouldn't fry your lights. Also you already had 3 positional switch that you could use as a main switch to further reduce passive battery drain.

Pretty much. You'll also pay a fine and get a penalty point on your drivers license(en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Point_system_(driving)). If you don't have a drivers license you'll also be charged for driving without a license. Same fines you'd get for driving an Illegally tuned car (maybe also without having a license) pretty much. So you might as well drive a drag-strip honda with nitrous injection on the street, thats more fun and gets you the same penalty as driving an illegal street scooter doing 20kmh.

Joke aside, brushless motor ESC can generate quite some transient voltage spike due to the nature of switched inductor. This is an even bigger problem with active or regen braking which often featured on most ESC because you're sending power back to the line. ESC requires stable input supply which can be attained by having an array of capacitor on the input and having low resistance power path to battery to dampen the surge, which I'm pretty sure the 5.5mm barrel connector is lacking of. Just my thoughts :-)

Hello. Thanks for sharing! For the "lights upgrade" - instead of dropping the voltage using resistors I would use step down converter - you had plenty of room for those and the advantage would be that once set - the lights would not dim when battery pack would discharge.

Sure but they draw a noticeable standby current and I wanted the battery to not drain through such loads when switch position 1 or 2 is active while the motor system is off.
