This truly shows the power of discipline , skill and structure in an army . They were able to overcome the Persians numbers. The Persian Empire despite some negative propaganda by bias Historians, ancient and modern, was by most accounts quite a fair and tolerant Empire. The Greeks in fact highly admired the Persians for their achievements in many academic fields, and had a healthy respect for Persian culture, basing many of their own ideas and philosophies on Persian thinking. Iran/Persia is a very old Nation with a long and rich history, and as a European myself I have always been drawn to its splender. It was Alexander the Great, after all, who was said to have remarked that "let none in Hellas who have never seen Babylon ever let claim these people to be next to us barbarians."

Nice video! I love to study about the Persian Wars! With the exception of Thebes and Argos, virtually all the major Greek poleis (cities) contributed with the Greek war effort during the Greco-Persian Wars! The Greco-Persian Wars, in fact, represented one of the few periods throughout the entire ancient Greek history, including the Archaic and Classical periods, when virtually ALL the main Greek poleis came together, at least militarily and politically, for a common goal: defeat and expel the Persians! During the Persian Wars, the Greek world became ONE (Μόνος), putting aside its ideological and/or political differences. Athenians, Spartans, Corinthians, Megarians, Thespians and even some few Thebans fought side by side! During the Greco-Persian Wars, in my historical analysis, all the four main factors that defined the Hellenic "identity", as it was defined by Herodotus, stood out during the conflict: • 1) "Same blood" ("Ομαιμον"); • 2) "Same language" ("Ομόγλωσσον"); • 3) "Same gods and sacrifices" ("Θεών ίρρυματα τε κοινά καί Θυσίαι"); • 4) "Same customs" ("ήθεα ομότροπα").

The greco persian war is the perfect example of quantity vs quality, Persia had superior numbers but greeks had superior warriors and significantly superior tactics
@timurthelamest56306 жыл бұрын
tyson thao More accurately it represented how Greek warfare was better suited in Greece as the Persian military strengths come from mobility via cavalry and archery. There is a reason why the Classical Greeks were usually defeated by the Persians elsewhere (less rugged terrain). That being said, the Persians were a minority in their own army, the army mostly comprised of other ethnicities fighting in their traditional forms, including the Greeks.

Ok, so in 507 BC Athens did present artapherenes with “earth and water”, and it wasn’t until Darius invaded mainland Greece that Athens, Sparta, and Eretria refused. Right before Darius invaded Greece there was one city state that agreed, and that was Aegina, but Athens and Sparta pressured them to withdraw there pledge. That was the last straw for Darius, and he began his invasion after that. Before marathon Eretria was sacked, and every man was killed, while all the women and children were sold into slavery. At marathon the Greeks were led by a council of 10 men, so each day the command of the army would change hands between these 10 men. The Greeks were supported by 400 Plataean’s hoplites, so the total army came to 10,000 men. While the Persians had about 19,000 infantry, and 1000 Calvary. The Greek charge spanned a distance of about 1 mile. At marathon the Greek center did collapse, and Persian soldiers were getting through the Greek center. The Greeks on the flanks routed the wings, and then they closed the circle, to make one fighting unit. At Thermopylae there were also slaves, and other helpers with the Greeks. There’s so much more, but I’ve already wrote a lot, so ya lol.

This was like a partial precursor of Cannae. The flexible and weaker center retreats under pressure, the flanks with elite troops envelops the compressed mass of enemy troops. It was missing the cavalry from behind, but here wasn't necessary and the retreat pretty much impossible due to crowded mass and the sea.
@davidwickman75435 жыл бұрын
One thing I dislike about your video is that you assume that t was told in a way that implied a cohesion between the Greek city states. This was far from the case. Each city state was independent with many having webs of alliances and enemies between them. Persia was not targeting the entirety of Greece in the Greco-Persian wars. The Persians targeted the Ionian city states, and then targeted Athens in particular due to their assistance given to the Ionians. The rest of the city states in mainland Greece only roughly banded together because they felt their independence threatened by Persia

The Greeks defeating the Persians was one of the biggest underdog victories in history. It was unfathomable and should NOT have happened. An equivalent today would be a country like Portugal stopping a full blown invasion by the USA. Such was the magnitude as Persia was a superpower at that time and the Greeks a tiny, poor and in the face of Persia, insignificant people. David vs. Goliath indeed. Had the Greeks failed, the Persians would have likely overran all of Europe. Who could have stopped them? Other European tribes such as the Germanic and Celtic tribes were primitive at the time. Rome was a small village. History would have been very, very different and western civilization might not have been what it was today.
@rohamghalamchi40463 жыл бұрын
Well I agree with your statement but considering that Persians were the first nation to invent human rights in Acheamanid era, Europe could have been even more civilised than what it is right now and it could have definitely stop world wars from happening. This also does mean that there could be a lot of civil wars happening if this was the case, or even conquering Europe could even make Persians to conquer east such as China or mongolia before the Mongols attack, we truly don't know what it would have happen but with the odds that I can see if such a thing happend the world would be more developed than what it is right now

Why should "the existence of the essence of the western culture" depend on a single battle fought almost 2500 years ago?! The Persian empire was not the only empire to capture lands in mainland Europe. Spain was ruled by Arabs for centuries. The Mongols made it to almost Poland and Hungary. Not to mention the Ottoman Empire (who were Muslim by the way) that reached the gates of Vienna. It seems that the statement ("the existence of the essence of the western culture") does nothing but aiming to ignite hatred and animosity and to relate to the political problems going on today between Iran and the west. And no surprises there when we see some idiots fully believe these ideas and choose to hate literally anyone from the middle east. This is very sad, I am an Iranian and I am NOT Muslim, and I love everything about the western culture, especially America, and I really hate to see it when I see that my love and friendship are answered by hatred. Dislike for the video for that statement 👎
@nexeroth71513 жыл бұрын
What he means is that western culture is very, very much driven by Greece history and culture, and then after that Roman. If Persia won here, it is certain that Greece and Rome would not have the influence you can see today. That much is obvious. Religion and politics have nothing to do with it. Congress, senate, all of that is from them. If Persia won, it would not be.
@cenakp5633 жыл бұрын
@@nexeroth7151 But there isn't any proof for that is it? How do you know that if Persia won, there wouldn't have been a senate or congress in the future? What if the Persian empire (if they conquered Greece) couldn't hold Greece for the next centuries? Can you ignore, for instance, uprisings? The Persian empire was pretty large at that time, it would have been difficult to hold all the regions together. Not to mention the possibility of Alexander rising and putting down the Persian empire. Also, can you say that the Persian empire wouldn't be influenced by Greek culture and democracy and wouldn't adopt it? Or wouldn't it be possible for the Persians to come up with a democracy similar to the Greeks? You see, it's not about the Greeks or the Persians or any other empire for that matter, it's about the history and the evolution of man. You surely cannot know what would have happened if Persia won that single battle unless you run a highly sophisticated simulation (which is not possible yet).
@cenakp5633 жыл бұрын
@@nexeroth7151 Also, that statement is repeated in the "300" movie, which is a movie that shows Persians as savage and degenerate people while showing Greeks as wise and honorable. It seems that this video is influenced by that movie to some degree at least. The "300" movie is nothing but a racist propaganda aiming to produce hatred towards middle Easterns, especially Iranians, and the movie is not historically accurate by the way. I'm not saying the Persians weren't cruel, they were and the Greeks weren't any different either, but the thing is that you cannot generalize people based on the actions of a few. But this is hard to understand for an average mind, and generalization is easy to understand, which is why many people adopt that kind of hatred. So they'd be thinking "Oh yeah Persians were savages just like they're now, and we wouldn't be living under democracy if it weren't for Greece and the Spartans!". I've encountered countless people with the same attitude who had no prior knowledge of history and all they wanted to believe was something from the movie "300".

As a matter of fact, West didn't enjoy Greek democracy. They had to endure Roman dictatorship for two millennium . The only people had the chance to practically demonstrate Macedonian democracy or Aristotelian democracy for at list 500 years were Central Asian ( Sogdian ), Bacterian (Afghanistan ), Parthian (Iran) and Entire Silk road from Antioch to China, Entire Syria, Phoenicia and Egypt before Roman conquest. By the way. Where do you think that Cyrus received his culture from? Why no Greek noble and philosopher or Greek people of Ionian coast and islands or Pontus and Paphlagonia had no problem with his ruling and his culture? Have you ever read Xenophon? Do you know people of Ekbatana ( Now: Hamedan ) overthrown last Medes empire king Astiages and rendered power to Cyrus? Do you know Darius I committed the biggest and the most bloodiest coup of The ancient history? There was 16 uprising against him from eleven Satrapies. He defeated all of them in two years with all wealth and soldiers that he could gather from Egypt and his Phoenician ally in Levant. Around 400 BC., there was a movement in Persia by Cyrus the younger to revive Cyrus I era and his way of Governing. Xenophon as we know was a friend of Plato and both of them were students of Socrates. Xenophon Joint the movement with Socrates and Plato's permission. Xenophon was not poor and he did not need to fight as a mercenary. Ten Thousand Ionian cavalry man joint Cyrus the younger to overthrow the seating Shah in order to establish a government and a ruling power based on The law of Cyrus I. No wonder Socrates was accused of favoring eastern barbaric Ideas against Greek democracy.

Greco-Persian wars have been narrated while saturated with lots of exaggerations especially when Greek historians report the number of victims of every side. As instance Herodotus claimed in Plataea war 260,000 Persians killed vs just 150 Greek soldiers !!! LOL !!! most of these numbers are just fake
