@NeilLewis77 The English FA were/are trying to replicate what they did with Southgate. I.E.-promote Carsley from the youth teams to the senior side. To be fair to Carsley, he won the U-21 Euro’s with England in Summer 2023 and beat Spain in the finals. Bigger picture, the FA were/are trying to use his experience and success with the younger players and bring that to the senior side.

@@Photosoflife i know mate. and to be fair to carsley its not his fault he has been put in a job that he has place being in. same as southgate. the list of u21 world champs and u21 european champs is massive. and almost none of those champions ever go on to achieve anything. adult football is alot harder than kids football. i just dont understand. if lee carsley is a good manager then why hasnt he had a singal season managing any club ever. i often think the reason guys take the u21 job is because its good pay and they cant get a proper job at a club. its no basis for hiring. the FA have a history of getting it wrong time and time again and i fear we now have to spend the next 8 years repeating the same mistake we just made. for the first time in my life im hoping to see england lose games, sack the manager and get a proper one in before the world cup comes around. sad days to be an england fan. we should be loving it. but alas, the FA.

Dont forget that Greece in there latest matches against higher ranking teams lost 2-1 to Germany only due to a 90 minute goal and outplaying germany and also drew 2-2 with France and 1-1 with Spain. Could of easily been 5-1 to them while they still had tears in there eyes five minutes into the game after the minutes silence . They didnt even finish a training session yesterday evening due to the loss of there teammate less than 24 hours before the game , a player who was also more english than greek and half the england team couldnt even be bothered to shake the Greek players hands after the game .

Assessment: Foden: should be on bench or dropped to allow him regain his fitness. Palmer: Using him as CDM will only work if a no 9 out there to pass, he should be no 10. Bellingham: He should be playing as an 8 in more conservative role. Saka: fine as a RWF Gordon: Probably better against teams that expect to have a lot of possessions instead of Greece who plays on counters. Rice: Should command and dictate game, these traits seem to be missing now.

Some of you might have seen my comments over the summer on ESPN FC. Particularly about Phil Foden. I am totally staggered that an England manager would start without a focal point. Recently I was telling a friend of mine why as a midfielder Michel Platini played a number of games for France in the centre forward position when Lacombe wasn't available or if they needed a goal, he would change positions. It was due to the fact that Platini could play with his back to gaol and lay the ball off, linking the play, then make the centre forward run and score a header. That is a rare gift he had. But guess what? England have NO midfielders with anywhere near that kind of ability. So you have to play a centre forward. England had four attackers running in one direction. And then have your best player in Palmer as a holding midfielder player?? I am seriously questioning whether English coaches actually have any sense at all. England are clearly not serious about winning football matches.

Smaller European countries like Greece take their national team very seriously because most of the players don't play in a top 5 league and they will almost never win European trophies. They mostly play in the same league and know each other better. It's also easier to practice because they're not scattered all over Europe. It almost seems like England doesn't take these national games too seriously unless the stakes are high..

England have 2 great players, Kane and Bellingham. The others play in the most followed league in the world, so people think they are world players. Of course, the media creates a narrative that they are the best, and then there is great disappointment. Historically, Spain, Italy, Germany, France are bigger European football teams than England, while England is on the same level as Croatia, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, Portugal, USSR (Russia), Denmark, Yugoslavia (Serbia), Greece, good national teams that are not at the level of the biggest ones (sorry if i forgot someone). The problem is that they think they belong in the first group. Titles count and they don't have them.

I don't think that Lee Carsley did a bad job for this one. He knew that Greece would play a defensive game so he tried to fill the box with many free role players to confuse the Greek defence. The thing is that Greece is a tough and athletic team so the defensive middfielders and both full backs had great pace and covered the wings and center really well. Wingers couldn't get to the box to create chances, also couldn't win one on one situations. As for the loss what could he do? if his defenders can't kick the ball outside the box? In both situations Pavlidis scored with a lot of defenders around him. Greece is a pacey team and good in the offence, you can see that in both previous games. As for the statistics before tonights game Greece had conceded only two shots on target in total, both from Finland and Ireland and had scored more goals than anyone in the group.

I always look at shots and shots on target. Only 12 shots on target at home is terrible. And only 2 on target is woeful. Coaches sometimes just forget the point of the game. Edit just heard 84th for second shot on target. You know what i mean.

Was thinking that the manager made a bad mistake rather than a deliberate decision to play an overloaded forward positions. If it was deliberate he could have fixed it to start the second half after he's made his point. Lewis looked really bad. 'They could have scored 5, 6 or 7'. Why do all pundits make this illogical error? Those were 5 or 6 chances to score ONE goal. If any of those chances went in then the whole course of the game could have changed. It's the same when it's 0-0 at half time and people say 'It could have been 3-0'. Not true. What really happened was there were 3 missed chances to go 1-0 up. It's pure logic and facts which gets lost in the way we get emotional in our analysis of missed chances.
