Greece shipwreck survivors seek justice

It's been a year since a fishing trawler packed with migrants capsized off the Greek coast claiming some 750 lives. It remains, to this day, one of the deadliest boat disasters in the Mediterranean, and questions still linger over the tragedy. Abdulvehab Ejupi reports.

How is this considered a Greek shipwreck? Wouldn't it be an Lybian shipwreck? So they are blaming the Greeks for the illegal smuggling of people on a boat to invade another country? Odd decision on who to blame.

It's a Greek shipwreck because it happened in Greek waters and it's not a Libyan shipwreck because it neither the ship or the waters it sank in belonged to Libya. Migrants seeking asylum are not invaders as they goals are to find asylum, not invade. Lastly the Greek Coast Guard are being blamed because, based on their stated duties and international law it was their responsibility. Think of it like a fire department failing to put out a fire dispute the building being a street away from the fire department: it doesn't matter who owns it or how/why it was built, the fact the fire department let the building burn down and people die raises important questions.

@@MazzaAzi That depends in some towns if you don't pay for the fire fighter services then you don't get their assistance. It has happened a few times and the resident home burns down as they didn't pay for the service. The greeks didn't cause the ship to sink they just didn't react in a timely manner, which are completely different things. Blame should go to the smugglers. And yes its invading, when not going through the legal proper channels then its an invasion when the numbers are in the 10s of thousands. I can go on both sides for aslyum seekers (minus religious persecution as I don't care for religion) but generally side with the removal of the 1950s law for refugees and aslyum seekers as it doesn't solve any underlying problems, just creates more.

The real fault lies with the owners of the boat, and the boat's captain that allowed his/her vessel to be overloaded with more people than it was designed to carry, or was certified under law. The entire voyage was against Intl law....that falls on the CAPTAIN.

You realize that these guys are lied to back home regarding how they will emigrate right? Most of these guys are too poor to afford education. YES even the education is not a basis right where they are from. And on top of that most of em haven't even stepped out of the village they were born in to know how the world works. It's not as simple as making a choice when you are being lied to by a mob of human traffickers

@@ObiJohnKenobi67 War isn't the only thing people flee from. Just do a quick google search, there plenty of reasons to seek asylum from Egypt. Just as a short example; Sonny, a famous American (and white) foodie youtuber, visited Egypt to do food reviews and was frequently harassed and threated by government representatives solely because he and his team had cameras. you can imagine how bad the natives have it if an American tourist gets treated that badly.

Greek here : The shipwreck happened because of the continuous pushbacks of the greek coast guard. Everybody in Greece knows this. Our government is notorious for these kind of crimes. Research about the crime of Tempi and the crime of Pylos and you will see

Hello I was a western tourist with a friend in Chios 2 years ago. I’m white and he’s black. We were stopped by individuals in plain clothes with face masks on. They refused to identify themselves, they were psychically violent, and we ended up being strip searched at the coast guard station.
