Agiasos has a long and very interesting #history. 1200 years ago the East Roman #Empire was ruling Lesvos island. Toward the end of the 8th century, it was a time of the civil #wars of #iconoclasm, regarding the #veneration of #christian themed images or #icons. #Irene of #Athens, the first female #Empress was an #Iconophile and died exiled in Lesvos. A dedicated priest called #Agathon, brought secretly an icon of #Madonna and the Holy Infant and other #relics from #Jerusalem, to Irene. By the time he arrived, Irene of Athens was already dead.
Agathon reached a remote wooded area which was a safe environment. Soon there was developed a #hermitage and then a #monastery dedicated to Agia #Sion - Holy Sion - with reference to the inscription on the icon of Our Lady, made by #Luke the #Evangelist. Finally the icon became renowned all over, a glorious #church was built and such was its importance that the #pilgrimage was considered almost equivalent to the pilgrimage to the Holy Land.
Agiasos thus is named after Agia Sion and is the village built around this church.
It is located at the slopes of mount #Olympos, at a height of 475 meters and 25 km west of #Mytilene the capital of the #island.
Agiasos, with a population of almost 2500 inhabitants, is known for its special bright green landscape, its narrow cobbled streets lined by ranks of tiled-roof #houses, the traditional #architecture and its restless and #religious inhabitants. It is indeed the #artistic and religious centre of the island, a preserved settlement that has many to offer to #visitors.
Stroll around the alleys of Agiasos, observing the stone houses, the #aromas of delicious homemade #meals, the #flowers and the #magic ambience of this stunning place, that has the potential to transfer you to an innocent era of the past.
Todays Church of Our Lady, or #Panayia in Greek, is the main attraction. Admire the architecture details and get closer to the Greek - #Orthodox #spirituality.
The #Market Square lined with neoclassical style coffee houses (“ #kafeneio") stands out.
Agiasos is famous for the Folk art, including #ceramics, wood carving and high quality local products like fresh #pasta, marmalades etc.
Apart from the #ecclesiastical and #folklore museums, Agiasos is famous for its local #carnival, the biggest and more vibrant on the island!
Explore the #trekking paths of the area that lead to the hill pick offering #panoramic views.
South of Agiasos lies #Plomari a colorful seaside settlement and Agios #Isidoros #beach maybe the most #exotic of Lesvos!
And finally the #aristocratic #Mytilene town and its main #attractions!
