jo tho I am a 63 years old lady, and also tonight, I went from cryint to dance with this video; because I am a self-taught person trying to learn some Greek, and even the pronunciation is not the correct, I am going to remember the characters of the alphabet... I really like the beat of this sound!
@briannawilson46899 жыл бұрын
Marina Garcia Solorzano I am half Greek and trust me even though the beat it good, I would not recommend this for people to use as a substitute for the actual pronunciation. It is 100% off

When you're pledging to a fraternity and you have some sort of membership candidacy period, they will tell you to recite the Greek alphabet at any given time during said period. It's traditional to end with 'sir' after reciting the alphabet (or pledge), to acknowledge their status as someone higher or more experienced in the realm of the fraternity that you're pledging to. Hope this clears up all the sir questions.

No problem. As you can see, one is able to extract precise pronunciations of Greek words through the Latin. There is no doubt, however, that Classical Greek and Modern Greek are polar opposites in relation to pronunciation.

Who cares if the pronunciations are wrong. It is just a plain cool song! I'm studying Greek slowly so this helps a lot.

Yup, exactly. It included all the important stuff we should know about our sorority, like it's history, policies, symbols. Stuff like that. It wasn't a big deal, but it's a way to make sure we actually know our sorority and what it stands for and where it came from. :)
@steventhepooh9 жыл бұрын
All the Greek people have to understand that the pronunciations of these letters as demonstrated in this song are the classic pronunciations of Koine Greek, which was the vernacular of the Roman Empire throughout the Hellenistic period. The pronunciations are therefore correct for those learning Greek in an academic setting where the literature is most commonly from the Hellenistic era.

The video serves to help people memorize the Alphabet. The video-maker apologized for the mispronunciation. Mispronunciation of language/ alphabets is very common anyways. I was born in the South-East of the U.S. and I pronounce some words quite differently than people elsewhere. I know how to spell, so what is the issue? And, where is your video, Sir? I would watch a correct pronunciation video if it was this catchy ....

Excellent video my friend, I am Greek that was raised in Greece, the problem with some Greeks here is that they don't know that the pronunciation is a little bit off due to the English language. I don't know not even one Greek word(and we have thousands of them) in the English Alphabet that is pronounced properly. English speakers just changed them so that the words can flow better when combined with their words, which is totally understandable. So I cant blame the Greeks for just trying to be "helpful" :)

It is the Greek pronunciation. Ancient Greek, that is. Modern Greek pronounces words and letters differently. "Upsilon", "Beta", "Gamma", "Mu" and so forth are the Classical Greek pronunciations. "Ipsilon," "Vita", "Yamma" and "Mi" are Modern variants.
@HaniiPuppy15 жыл бұрын
Chi is pronounced "Chee", where the Ch represents the rough-sounding ch that is best known in the scots words "Loch" or "Stramach", as opposed to the Ch sound as in "Chocolate" or the Ck sound as in "Lick" Psi is pronounced "Psee" - the P hasn't been silenced and it still pronounced at the start before the S Omega is pronounced "Awmeegah" The ones that I haven't mentioned were spelt correctly :P

That's a very good point. When we cite the Roman alphabet, no one goes back to Roman pronunciation. They give a modern pronunciation, and even that differs by country. The British say there's differently than the Americans. Not to mention the Italians who are different than the Latin I was taught.

We're talking about Greek, not Latin. The mi-pi sound is what makes for latin-english "b" I once sat in an office with two Classics professors at U. Michigan who had this discussion (both Greek natives) and it went nowhere. They then moved on to argue whether Heidegger deliberately mistranslated Parmenides by eliminating punctuation in order to create compounds. They couldn't agree on anything. I trusted the person who saw continuity much more than the other.

You do realize that a large number of the people who watch this are doing it for pledging purposes, right. They don't have to know the exact pronunciation of ever letter usually, it's more of memorizing order and spelling with their respective letters.

So we are clear, this is Ancient greek. Some Roman scholar fucked up the pronunciation with latin elements and the Modern Greek language ( which is softer on the ear) was created. They read the same, but sound entirely different. Note, I am NOT an expert XD
