On the night of Holy Saturday, Resurrection Mass takes place. Usually, all the lights in the church are turned off a few minutes before midnight and the priest exits the altar holding candles lit by the Holy Light, which is distributed to everyone inside and outside the church.
Due to the Covid-19 measures, the Resurrection is celebrated at 9 pm this year. At 9 o’ clock, the priest exits the church and announces the resurrection of Jesus. The Holy Light is spread with all the candles of the people attending.
Fireworks and crackers go off in the distance (normally that would be just outside the church, but because of the damage to the church by the earthquake, it will now be done in the harbor instead).
When the Resurrection Mass is over, people return home, bringing the Holy Light along. They will use their candles to draw a cross on the door sill for good luck. After that, they will light a candle inside the house that remains lit for thirty to forty days.
