Awesome! I'm Russian Orthodox Christian, and though there might not be enough differences to make a whole other episode about, I'm really glad you got to visit these folks, Zack! And as for churches, some are big and ornate, other's are quiet little attics with some icons. It's very organic, like Noah said. Also, Russian churches usually don't have pews. We stand. For two-three hours. It's wonderful. (But really, it is.)

That church was built by the Skouras family, three brothers of which were presidents, chairmen, etc. of 20th Century, Fox, and United Artists. I believe it was built during the Depression, and the Skouras family employed out-of-work Hollywood artists and set designers to create the non-traditional look of the church. I believe certain faces in the imagery are based on 1930s Hollywood stars and members of the family (e.g. grandchildren as cherubim). Personally, I prefer the traditional style of iconography, but having been to St Sophia's, I must say that, as a whole, for the space and for the place (i.e. Los Angeles), the aesthetic works very well.

I am a Catholic. And as a Christian, I love this video. I think most Christians get too into the "my faith is better" attitude. And in this video I'm proud of how they didn't show that side of Christianity. I believe each faith holds a certain piece of "God's puzzle". There are no wrong ways or right ways. It all leads to one thing. Beautiful video.

Zach is perfect for this show. Only someone open minded, curious and understanding could do a show on all kinds of different religions. Many people couldn't do it fairly and respectfully due to their own belief system and other religions conflicting with it. This is charming. I was raised Baptist, too, and in my search for the original Church, converted to Catholicism about 5 years ago. But something wasn't right about it. Who was St. Augustine and why did the priest always mention him as a very important "Doctor of the Church"? Why was the the phrase "and the Son" in the Creed when John 15:26 says the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father? Why was the Pope always deferred to no matter what he taught? So in my research into these questions (also as to why the priest was mean to the parishioners, who were very loving and kind), I discovered Orthodoxy and started studying it. I learned a lot of the history of the Church, about the Great Schism of 1054, about the various Doctors of the Church (and how their opinions didn't necessarily equate to dogma and were not always accepted by the Church Fathers).I still don't know about all the Saints, but I learned about theosis and what salvation means to the Orthodox, about the hesychasm (experiential Christianity) of the Orthodox and the scholasticism (intellectualism of Christianity) of the Catholics and many other things, such as the persecution the Orthodox have gone through and the recent ecumenical movement, why that is not Scriptural, and the persecution of the Orthodox Christians in Ukraine by the non-canonical sect. Especially I have learned that while "the Kingdom suffers violence and the violent take it by force", we are told that Christ will always be with His own Church and that "the gates of hell will not prevail" against her. Most importantly, I learned the Jesus Prayer, which is "Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me a sinner".

What bothered me was that he kept saying "Greek" Orthodox. Orthodoxy IS NOT just Greek. Orthodoxy is Universal. The Orthodox religion just does not belong to Greece, but all of the East and is even spreading to the West. There are Russian Orthodox, American Orthodox, Serbian Orthodox, Romanian Orthodox, Arabic Orthodox, Ethiopian Orthodox, the list goes on! We are everywhere and of all different backgrounds. Again, the Orthodox faith is not just excluded to Greeks.

This isn't to say it doesn't follow the basic loyout, wall icons, iconostasis, Theotokos and Jesus at the very front giving a blessing. But the color scheme, style, and angles are all VERY different. They strike me as a perfect blending of Byzantine and Western styles.

I've thought about this a lot, with people praying and having some prayers answered while others aren't, I think if it doesn't come true its not that God isn't listening, its that sometimes His answer is 'no' or 'not right now.' I think they don't come true because its either not what is right/best/meant for us, or because something better is supposed to come. Everything happens for a reason and in the end it all works out. If it's not working out, then it's not the end.

debbieomi You're not being a dick; you're asking the hardest question any person can ask: why does s--t happen? The way I see it, God created us all out of love, and He wants us to love Him back. But love is a choice. If you're "programmed" or coerced to love, it's not real love. So he gave us free will to choose to love him. And too many people use that will to choose to hurt others, to beat and molest and kill the innocent and put them in concentration camps and torture them. God isn't doing that; people are. Some people drive down an icy road and get killed. Others go through terrible accidents and miraculously survive. But they, too, will die one day. :-( I believe death is a tragedy. It's not "part of life." It's not what God made us for. But people turned away from God and chose their own way, which led to death. Unfortunately, every one of us will die one day. But we believe that because Jesus Christ is God made man, and he died and rose from the dead, he destroyed the power of death to consume us. So even though we will die, it's only temporary. One day, when God decides, there will be a general resurrection of every person who ever lived. That is the Christian belief. I don't mean to come across like there's an easy answer to this. There is no easy answer to why horrible things like disease and torture happen to people. I just believe that God cares about everything that happens to us, not only now while we're on earth but forever. I wish you the best.

And for those who are so turned off by the idea of believing in God, might I suggest that from the time time began, mankind has thought of God as being pissed-off at humanity, wanting to punish them, and needing to be appeased. We see this belief throughout history. In Jesus, God shows us that that belief is wrong. As Jesus, God showed his love for everyone EXCEPT the self-righteous prigs of his day. He treated women with respect they had never seen before, ate with the outcasts of his day who would never have been accepted in proper society, hugged lepers (the ancient equivalent of HIV/AIDS today), and lived a life of nonviolent resistance to the powers of his day. As to some other parts of Bible, they have to be understood within the context of culture. When that is done, at no point does God come off as trying to limit human freedom. Instead, he is trying to teach us how to be fully and abundantly human--as Jesus was.

I'm studying orthodoxy as we speak. Coming from a Roman Catholic background, I find it very different in terms of the theology. The very concept of Hell is so different to me. The afterlife: if one goes immediately to heaven or waiting for the second coming is so different.
