One reason people wear cowboy hats is cultural, or as the author says "an enduring symbol of America..." But another reason might be that nothing better has been created to deal with the weather of the West. Cowboy hats protect you from brutal sun that might give you melanoma. They keep your head warm when its cold and cooler when its hot. The felt breathes just enough to prevent moisture buildup, like an old fashioned version of Goretex. Cowboy hats shield you from rain and keep the sun out of your eyes (before sunglasses that was really important). When done right they feel good to wear and look good too. Cowboy hats are still the superior interface between the head and the elements.

Did this company make the hats for the TV series Yellowstone? I heard the hats in that series were made by a Colorado hat making company.
