You probably won’t ever see this, but you are a hero dude and your friend would definitely be proud of who you’ve become and the decisions you’ve made. You potentially saved another humans life and overcame one of the worst injuries. Don’t ever question your decision, there’s a reason why we do what we do. Losing your friend at a young age made you realize how precious life was. You seen that boy frozen and instead of being selfish like most people would you thought about that boy as a human just like you with a family and a life too. The military tries to take that away from us. They don’t want you to see your buddies or enemy as human. It’s easier that way. But some humans don’t lose their hearts even as combatants. Those are true heroes.

I've had my collar bone broken, right foot crushed with six fractures requiring two operations, left elbow shattered requiring two operations, three cracked ribs, six bones broken in right hand, multiple toes broken and one bad second degree burn (accident prone, no combat, I fall upstairs) but with all that medical issues nothing could match having to stick your finger into your femoral artery while being in a active ambush. No words....

Dude, do not regret that decision! Fk training. Do what you think is best. Either blocking to save him or going after the shooter are the two best moves. I know the army spent a ton of money to train you and they do not want that investment wasted, but we are all in charge of our own lives and have to live with ourselves. Kudos.
