now that we're in the weeds with weird-ass military movies, you guys should take a look at Mine. A marine stepped on a mine and couldn't move cuz that will set it off. The infosec geek in me is very happy you mentioned crypto. I don’t think the general public really understands how it works, which does make a bit of sense. I’ve been in infosec for more than two decades, suck at math, and I sorta get crypto. It’s such a huge part of information security & assurance. Unfortunately humans doing things incorrectly tends to be the weekday link. Edit: the tourniquet ‘training’ would have been hilarious!

Idk, Brother. The way we did it was we requested QRF based solely on the enemies' disposition. If they were assholes, then yeah, Heavy Escort would be required. But if the Tally-whackers had a generally sunny disposition, then we'd let the QRF know that, yeah, they're shooting at us, but they seem to be fairly nice people, generally speaking, so a Light Escort or even No Escort was ok...lol

When they brought up the tourniquet, it made me think of the time that I nearly got kicked off of a ride along while I was going through EMT B School. There was a patient in an MVA, wound to the neck and he was bleeding out. The paramedic I was doing a ride along with thought it would be a high speed idea to put a tourniquet around the guy's neck, and he did not see anything wrong with it. I nearly got into a fist fight with the guy, telling him how he was going to kill that patient, long story short, his partner saw what was happening, and stopped the medic from doing any more damage, then I got my ass chewed out by the medic and by the lt that was working that day, for copping an attitude with the paramedic.

Do you guys think there was any way to make this film while not committing all these "reality sins" regarding SOP? Because I get that they wanted to tell a story about these guys being isolated and pinned down by a sniper, it's a great idea. But was there a way to realistically get these guys in that position or no?
@zephyr3638

I would say they should've made the scene into a valley that was a radio deadzone, then have them somehow get pushed into the valley via insurgents, sandstorm, etc. Then, have the two beside each other, John Cena gets sniped, and the round hits the protagonist's leg on the exit, providing him the opportunity to get to cover and be pinned behind "The Wall". That would set up the same thriller aspect. But I don't think there'd be any way to have a single sniper persuade the military to send loads of people to their death.

The truth is Doug Liman is a pretty good and known director. He directed movies like The Bourne Identity (2002), Edge of Tomorrow (2014) and American made (2017), which is a very good movie about a real pilot (played by Tom Cruise) who worked undercover for the CIA and transported drugs and weapons for Pablo Escobar in the 80's. But I agree, this movie really isn't one of his good works - maybe the script wasn't good and lacked realism. It's not always 100% the director's fault.

I was watching something this weekend about Vietnam. Apparently, early on there was an instance where an NVA guy impersonated an American and called US artillery on a US position. Rounds were fired before they could put a stop to it. The guy being interviewed said the couldn't believe the NVA was so sneaky. They had to change their whole radio protocols afterwards.

Ahhhh this reminded me of the funniest goddamn story that a family friend had when he was in Iraq. They were being exfil from a location in iraq and they had been under fire, and everyone was in high tension it just wasn't a great day for them. they were waiting for a chopper to come take them out. Well they get to their exfil site and there is absolutely nothing around them and then all of a sudden he takes 4 to the chest, because the only fucking bush in the entire country, just happened to be 10 feet from them, with a dude hiding in it. So they waste the dude, and he was lucky 3 of the 4 shots hit one of his plates and the other had hit the vest but didn't pentrate, left him with a gnarly bruise. But his hysterical laughter telling this story about the only bush in the entire country just happened to have a dude in it hiding and they had no idea. The wild thing about this movie, is they had a ranger sniper, named Nicholas Irvin on set as an adviser. How the hell did he not tell them how this all worked.

The wounded guy could tell him from what direction the shot came from, to have an idea to where the sniper may be

You guys talking about this not being a strong simplistic movie reminded me of Mine. That one is a pretty good military movie that nails the simplicity.

Dudes. How many times do I have to say it. Breakdown ’kajaki’ it’s a true story of British paras trapped in a minefield in Afghanistan. It’s fantastic. And also breakdown clear and present danger.

One of the things I hate about movies and bullet wounds. Oh, yes get the bullet out and you will be fine. Such BS. Bullets are left in people all the time after being shot. You are only going to cause more damage and make yourself bleed out faster if you take the bullet out. Same for impaling scenes, leave the object in unless you want to bleed out before help gets to you.

Yes. My father lived a long life with a small calibre round floating near his spine which the surgeon said at the time was to risky to go for as the operation would cause more damage than the wound channel had. As new techniques like keyhole surgery came in, they looked at the possibility of removing the bullet, but it never caused any trouble, so it stayed.

Awesome breakdown. The suspense was good, but that was the only thing about this movie that was good. Y'all nailed it. 👍👍
