Күн бұрын

This week on Tactical Rifleman I wanted to cover what I carry in my “Red Bag.” Some people would call it a “Bug Out Bag” or “Get Home Bag.” I’m not big on those names, as it gives thoughts that I am some nut case Prepper. That is not the case. I am just a retired Green Beret that has had “preparedness” beat all the way down into my DNA.
After our “Hiking Bag” video did so well; we got a lot of comments asking for me to show what was in my “Bug Out Bag.” A lot of students that attend our courses, likewise, wanted me to do a video about my “Bug Out Bag.” So, OK; here it is, but don’t bitch because I didn’t show you any need secret kit for you to buy or any “magical” piece of gear that you just HAVE to get. Nope. Just my bag of stuff that I want to have with me.
So, this minimalist bag is going to really let down all the survivalists that follow our channel. Sorry about that. However, on the flip side, a lot of our other viewers are also gonna scream that I have WAY too much crap to drag around with me all over the planet. So, either way, I loose. Except, that I don’t care. This is what I carry in my vehicle. It is currently in my jeep; as I just returned from a trip to Memphis to teach a course. It’s a 4 hour drive, one way. Never touched the bag the whole weekend. Didn’t bother me a bit. However, if something had happened, it was there for me, to make my life easier.
I hope you enjoy the video, and I really do look forward to reading all the comments from all our viewers out there. I’m hoping there are lots of suggestions for other great items that I might have missed, as I do still have a bit of room left. However, I have a feeling that 90%of the suggestions will be for items that I already have stashed in my vehicles. I wasn’t joking when I said that Jeep is loaded down with great gear.

Karl, I couldn't agree more that knowledge is key when it comes to this. Nineteen pounds is my limit, and I am confident in my ability to make do with this. I don't have to be super comfortable. I just have to stay alive. It's way easier on the back, legs, and feet. Also, you don't look like you're storming the castle. It's great to blend in, and look unassuming. Great video! I'm making my wife watch this so she can here someone other than me preaching that you don't need to try, and pack the entire house into a bag. I one hundred percent believe this mentality, and live it. Thanks, brother.

- Use your cellphone calendar function and plug in the expiration dates of your meds and batteries. - Toothpaste expires also so I would put a full tube in and rotate it with that in your bathroom. When you run out in the bathroom, take the one in your bag and buy a new one for the bag. - Rite in the Rain makes an excellent .9mm pencil like we used to get in the military, I highly recommend its a companion to your Rite in the Rain pen. - The bad thing about duct tape is it looses it's adhesivety when you reapply it, so I don't recommend taping it all over other items to save space and weight. I have a full or partial roll and deal with it. - I would carry the survival knife at the top of the bag on the inside or attached outside the bag or on me. - Walmart sells the survival food bricks that are similar to the lifeboat rations. - Get the largest heavy duty trash bags you can find, not the little kitchen bags. I also have huge tri-wall shrouds that are huge and make perfect shelters in a pinch, they're much thicker than any trashbag you'll find and are clear. They come in rolls of 50 or 100 and are not cheap.

I carry a couple of large orange trash bags also. Some times you need to be visible. Everyone always seems to plan like their bag is for the world ending and it’s every man for himself. It may just be your car breaks down in the middle of nowhere. Or you may be hurt and can’t move. You may need to signal for help and a bright orange bag stands out. And they can still be used for all the other stuff. Shelter, poncho, tarp, carrying gear, ect.

Karl: Great video, as always. Might I make a suggestion (or two). It will only take up a tiny (tiny) bit of space and will be light. An essential bit of kit is a sewing kit. In the sewing kit have a range of needles (sack needle, sail needle, leather needle, carpet needle). They can be invaluable when you are repairing your rucksack, boots or your tarp. When traversing down "shit creek" repairs to body AND equipment will aways be necessary. Replace cotton with 0.14 Dynama fishing line. Also include darning thread and darning wool for essential sock repair. The French army may "march on its stomach", as Napoleon said, but the British Army marches on its feet. Yes, we are strange like that. For purposes of a darning "mushroom" use half an old tennis ball (the inner rubber bit, you understand). Oh, and if anybody out there does not know how to darn a sock or a tear or sew on a button, best learn now. It does not take long but you need to know how to do it. In the wilderness, in my experience, the first things to break are: Your shoelaces; your socks; your boots, the skin on your hands and feet, and any zips. If you look after your feet, your feet will look after you. A selection of spare buttons can repair any busted zip problems. I also keep a few spare replacement zip fasteners of different sizes in my sewing kit. Again, takes up virtually no space. Note spare shoelaces (of course, 550 will do). Since I have started using Ironlace I have never had any breakages. On the same subject of running repairs, I strongly recommend a Yank product, namely Shoe Goo. This is brilliant stuff for repairs, be it your footwear,.... tarp, coat,...or anything else for that matter. You can buy a tiny tube of the stuff. However, it is also a brilliant accelerant. If you cannot start a fire with this stuff, then you should not be let out into the wilderness at all. Over and out!! Keep making the fantastic and educational films. Love the tip about the coffee by the way. Best wishes, from the town with "Four Thousand holes."

@@m.e.3614 I take your point M.E. It is, of course, good to make items multi-purpose. Just one question though: Have you ever tried making a repair with the awl on the Leatherman Surge? I really don't recommend it. Sometimes the proper kit, especially if it is light, is the one you need. There are no substitutes, This is why, for centuries, the British Tommy carried his 'Housewife' (ie sewing kit). Good enough for them,..... good enough for me.

(What knife is that??) My old man was a WWII navy "commando" jump, UDT, 50 cal gunner, hand-to-hand instructor "pre-seal" guy... Lost at sea for 3 months in the Aleutian Islands and pronounced dead to his family, born in the backwoods of Lickskillet and Possum Trot, hunting to put food on the table, mean old SOB. There was only a couple things he tought me well that really stuck, before I joined up. A- The more you know, the less you need. B- There's two ways to do something. The right way and again. I have put together uber-bug-out-bags for civilians, one or two for myself and some kits for the vehicles (including MY Suburban). I'm with you... If I've got a handful of small things I can carry with me, I'm good. But I learned to hunt and fish and trek the woods and mountains and snow from the time I was a little kid. Dad always drug me with him wherever he went, hauling his shotgun and gear duck hunting or rabbit hunting from age 6, blah blah. Nowadays, if it doesn't have a keyboard or come from Amazon, they're clueless and need a raft of gear to go to the city park. Sorry for the rant, it's just a real pet peeves of mine. Thanks for setting them straight. And we used to call it "Disco tape..." lol For water purification and medical sterilization and skin care and starting fires anywhere, anytime... "POT-PERM" (potassium permanganate) for water and skin cut sanitizer) and glycerine. Glycerine is great for chapped skin. Mix a quarter sized pile of pot-perm and a few drops of glycerine and Presto! An exo-thermic reaction and you have fire. A dime-roll size tube of each and you cover a number of uses. I have one of those Worksharp knife sharpeners, they're fantastic. Best $20 I ever spent (on knife sharpeners). (he also warned me about people who refer to themselves in the third person) ;D

Dang, we must be related. Our bags are almost identical. Yes, coffee coffee coffee. People get hurt when I dont have my coffee. ALso, that Spectra line at 30ish bucks per 100 foot is crazy. But i see your point. Sat phones have come down a lot. It's not much more if any than a regular Smart phone. initial and monthly cost wise. 70 bucks a month for 30 minutes. 50 cents a text. 1500 for the phone. It's doable if you are going to some sketchy places. As per footwear. I have chicken ankles at 6'3". I sprain my ankles at least twice a year. So when going off trail I wrap them with ACE and ALWAYS wear 5 to 7" boots. My biggest weakness is Navigation. I need to take a class or something. I have compasses etc just dunno how to use it. +1 for the pack choice. I've also taken survival Wilderness courses and I'm amazed that someone brings a 60L pack stuffed to the gills with a lot of "what if" items, also with people who bring the smallest pack possible completely stuffed to busting with no consideration for Scavenging extra items. My Philosophy is always been that your bag should be designed for you to begin survival and fall back on your level of training. First, great, GREAT JOB!!! (And, THANKS for your service!!!) Far too many people (especially veterans) get too "tactical." Kudos for using a low-key backpack design, that doesn't scream "danger" to people you approach. I've been doing this for decades, and indeed picked-up a few great tips from you and your gear. I re-watched your video two or three times -- just to make sure I wasn't missing anything. Again, MANY THANKS!!! My questions/feedback/suggestions: 1.) You have spare shoes and spare reading glasses. I'd suggest that you toss a spare set of sunglasses in there, too. (e.g. last year's?) 2.) I'd suggest a roll (or two) of quarters. You indeed have fishing line and snare wire. FYI: MOST bug-outs are relatively urbanized (motel-to-motel) -- as opposed to a 200-mile foot-hike through the backwoods/desert. Even if you DO foot-hike, you will likely pass through towns and such -- and having quarters for vending machines is AWESOME -- especially at 2am at a motel. 3.) Poncho? I personally favor ponchos (over rain coats) because they can cover your pack, too. They have many other uses, too. Kinda the Swiss Army Knife of rain-gear & shelter and such? I figure if you are keeping spare shoes at-the-ready, and socks -- you might want to consider some sort of rain-gear, too? 4.) Hat/Cap? I realize you are wearing one in the video. (And, probably wear one frequently?) Probably have two more in your Jeep and Suburban? But, don't ya' think you should maybe keep a spare clipped to the side of your pack, or a boonie rolled-up inside? If you don't need it, you could always ditch/toss it away. But, if you aren't wearing one when the SHTF, I think you'd probably WANT one? (or two?) Maybe even a roll-up knit hat (in case the weather is cold at night?) 5.) FOLDING Wrist Rocket (Marksman Beeman LaswerHawk Folding Slingshot) plus a couple of extra/spare replacement bands. With just a little practice, you can actually become quite skilled with these! PLENTY of ammo (rocks/pebbles along the trail.) GREAT for shooting birds, squirrels, rabbits -- PEOPLE, etc. Also great for hunting while "on the run" (as opposed to fishing and snares, which require you to be somewhat stationary.) Plus, they are just FUN!!! Tip: Keep a couple of bolts in your pack. Tie the fishing line to the bolt, then shoot the bolt via the wrist-rocket over a tree limb or whatever. Then, tie the paracord to the fishing line, and pull stuff up. Kinda like a poor-man's grappling hook? Great way to get gear (or yourself) up into a tree, or up a cliff, or swing across a creek, etc. LOTS more uses, too. (e.g. convert it into a packs bow/arrow set-up, too!

Hey brother, I just had this video playing on my TV. I had to stop and grab my phone to drop this comment. I'm a 350 pound dude. Chaffing will CRIPPLE YOU! I carry SIX golf ball sized small containers of ORIGINAL vaseline for that. Works wonders. Won't sweat off easily. Avoid vaseline with baby powder or off brand vaseline. I have a 4 door like his but I'm only 5'5" so I sleep in one side while the other side and above is my CACOON. cabinets, gear, tray, just a BUGOUT JKU! I have a teardrop w/ generator but my BAG and mountain bike are for a LAST MEASURE. Presently saving for a fat-tire ebike and solar chargers for complete package.

Have you hiked 200 miles with this setup? I don’t see any shelter or anything that can prevent conduction. Most people can’t hike all day and build a shelter out of nothing. An emergency blanket isn’t enough, if it’s a low of 55 degrees, without something underneath your body, you will NOT have a good nights rest. In turn you will not have the energy or mindset to hike another 15 miles to get to your next camp point. Especially if your hiking 200 miles. Now if this is for a six mile hike to get home, totally effective, but it still might be overkill.

Yep, gotta cover all the Survival basics. As temperatures drop, this bag gets bigger. However, April to October here in Kentucky, this bag serves me well. It is going to be 95 today; shelter is still needed, but not for warmth. While 200 miles is a good planning number, remember that most emergencies happen closer to home. This bag is NOT just for the apocalypse, and has served me well many times. Thanks for watching, TR

I saw you carry ball ammunition in this pack, another advantage to ball ammo is hunting, you could use that for small game and not totally demolish it like you would with defensive ammo, yet you can still defend yourself from larger threats. I carry a couple mags of each. I seem to have the unpopular opinion that a 22 is not a good survival gun (better than nothing), sure you can take down small game, but what if you get lucky enough to stumble upon a deer, or unlucky enough to stumble upon some druggies or thugs and suddenly that 22 isn't enough? "But I'm a good shot and I can hit my target", well we will see when they start shooting back. "You can carry 500 rounds", true, but 500 underpowered ,under ranged rounds. I think 200-300 rounds of ANYTHING else is better, maybe even less if the weight becomes more of an issue.
