If you plant your tomatoes with Marigolds (not the gloves) the scent of the marigold keeps the green fly that attack tomato plants - and the scent of the tomato plants keeps the slugs away from the marigolds and the combined scent of them both deter any other potential slug invasion plus they also look pretty X I was sceptical and it worked for me this year I had them in pots, and ground level.
