Green Hojari Frankincense Grading

Green Hojari is the highest grade frankincense available. It’s harvested from trees of Oman and is a wonderful resin used as incense for burning. This grade can also be chewed as a gum or ingested for medicinal uses! The price between vendors for Green Hojari can differ quite wildly. There are different grades of green hojari. I don’t think there is an exact type of frankincense that is used in churches. My local one uses dragons Blood. It could be anything really

Churches generally use frankincense from another species, Boswellia Papyrifera (common Ethiopian Frankincense). This one has a more sweet / starchy aroma, and is produced in much bigger amounts than Boswellia Sacra (Arabian / Hojari Frankincense). These will often be infused with fragrant oils from flowers (especially rose), myrrh, benzoin, sandalwood, cedar and citrus fruit oils. There's many kinds of church incense mixes available, including more raw forms (resin piece / granules + flower petals + wood shavings), infused forms (resin pieces / granules saturated with the fragrant oils), or dough forms (dough made from powdered resin mixed with fragrant oils). What's different about the way churches use incense is they tend to go with a brief but really strong burst of incense--use a large piece of charcoal and pile up a generous amount of the church incense mix on top. This has more ceremonial significance, to punctuate the major activities of the mass, sacramental events and other notable rituals. This differs from having a subtle and constant exposure to the fragrance over a longer time period, as you might want for a tea ceremony or for meditation.

This is not green. This is brown, red and white. The highest green is actually green and it is classified as Sultan’s grade.

Sorry I’ve never heard of ‘red’ grade before, please enlighten me. Sultan grade actually is the most expensive hojari you can get...if you can get it. It actually has a slightly blue hue to it when fresh.

Luban Sakra has 4 grades: Hojari - Sultan Green, Royal Green, Green Najdi - White or Yellow Frankincense Shazri - Brown or Red Frankincense Shabi - Black Frankincense Hojari resin, or its commercial name ROYAL GREEN HOJARI, is the best luban grade. The essential oil of Boswellia Sacra is shown to have analgesic properties stronger than aspirin[34]. The shabi grade of Boswellia Sacra resin showed the strongest pain-killing effects in a recent study.
