some species thicken great in small pots. others not so much. like portulacaria afra love to be root bound in small pots. maples on the other side like bigger pots to grow thick in my exp at least. i like that tooth paste idea it makes sense. nice work too as always mike

Thanks Mike! I'm hoping ficus are one of the species that do well with it. If not, it'll still be a good experiment. Gotta crack a few eggs to make an omelette!

Ive notest that the second year after a repot my trees explode with growth but then that third year they start to slow down once they get root bound. I've got a shimpaku and japanese maple in 5 gallon buckets and sister seedlings in smaler pots and the trees in buckets a 5 times bigger. I use bonsai pots to slow down the growth so i dont get large intrernodes. Mybe ficus are different. I've also heard the Japanese say if you over pot tree the tree cant grip the pot, but im not sure what they mean when the tree is wire in.

I've heard that too. I always thought they meant the tree will stay loose in the pot?

Don't know why you wouldn't just have repositioned the plant so that the large root would then be above soil line.

@@mariomene2051 Probably not. I e done your idea before on a few trees and you're right, it does turn out pretty good as long as you don't over do it, (which I've done before too). I had an oak grown from seed that turned out cool that way.

Ginseng ficus are grafted to Chinese banyan.

It's hard to tell. When you google Ginseng Ficus, Chinese Banyon, Ficus Microcarpa, etc, they basically all say the same thing. I think the varieties are very similar.

​@BonsaiBoise it's as clear as mud..😂😂 A quick scan of ficus ginseng tree info reveals that its botanical name is Ficus microcarpa. The tree is the result of a graft where the rootstock is developed into the characteristic “potbelly” trunk, and a scion of a variety of small-leaved ficus is grafted to the top. The tree

@@dkstott29 I also read somewhere that Microcarpa, isn't even Microcarpa. They were mislabeled when first imported in the US in the 1800's and just remained mislabeled ever since. But we won't cloudy things even further with that 😀
