The original with Chuck Barris ran 1976-1978 on NBC and 1976-1980 in syndication with Gary Owens hosting originally, then Barris taking over. Barris ended production on all his shows in Spring 1980 in part due to the backlash of Three's a Crowd being controversial for its time. Newlywed and Dating were doing decent in the ratings as a daily syndicated show at that point. Reruns of Gong and some of the other Barris shows continued in reruns in syndication through around 1986 and Gong aired on USA Network from, 1984-1987. Newlywed returned in Sep 1985, Dating in Sep 1986. Chuck Barris left his company sometime in 1987 and Gong returned in 1988-89 in this version. Newlywed and Dating ended when this version Gong did in mid-1989

That's not Maynard though. He did the pig voice on "Three Little Pigs" and Danny Carey drummed for them on the album I believe, but Maynard didn't sing with them. Anyway, joke's on The Gong Show, because they became more successful and popular than anyone else on that show, with the exception of Pee Wee Herman and maybe a couple others.
