@black_iconАй бұрын
You should go and look at the interviews Neil Adams did before his passing. It is understanding that you being a light skin and how you feel, but what you stated is not the case. In the early days of comics, they color black characters gray or light brown. John Stewart was DC's 1st black superhero and one of the 1st black superheroes the creator, a white man, and a true ally for blacks at the time pushed to color John's dark tone. DC pushed back on him and the back and forth has been decades. John was not a Default Brown completion Adam even told a story where they came to him and tried to make him the default brown and Adams told them no, he wanted John darker which represents the real Black people's dark skin tone. So, I do not see how you have that confused when Adams actually talked about this very thing you mentioned about the completion of that area. The point many disagree with in this casting has nothing to do with hate. Black people need to realize we are not the same and not from the same tribe. Adams intentionally made this character dark-skinned. There is no way around that. DC shitted on his work with this casting. This does not mean we do not wish him well, it does not mean we do not want light skin to work. DC needs to stop being lazy and either create new characters or use a neutral character. John Stewart is not a neutral character..... Until Black people voice that we are not the same and the chosen one who comes in all different shades they are going to disrespect the difference in our tone. I mean Hollywood cast Chadwick as Thurgood Marshall a light skin near white Black man. This really makes no sense. Some people getting up set over the skin tone of a comic book character, in which pretty much all Black people have the same skin tone..which is not reality. Why are those people trying to compare comic book characters , who are never shown in the multiple shades of we come in. I really don’t care what skin tone the actor is, though I do agree with that colorism can be a part of this. There are some questionable choices and brings up that “they” often subconsciously (or consciously as it often appears). It is a blind spot , something we do need to point out, but let’s not get staunch on it that we mess up the careers of those who are not darker shades . We need to find ways to bring this up for change for the better. I remember the early Black is Beautiful stage we went through in the 60s and 70s where in some areas light toned Blacks where pushed back on by our darker skin tone brothers and sisters, just for being lighter skinned and therefore shouldn’t be calling themselves Black and being proud of that. This is some we Blacks need to consider and often recognize all of the time.
@sweetchristmas6382Ай бұрын
Comic books are all over the place when it comes to the coloring of black characters. From issue to issue you will see different shades, so trying to argue which shade is the correct shade for a character is subjective. Is a colorism a thing, yes. Does it apply here, i don’t think so. Would we have the same issue, if it were a really dark skin actor, as opposed to the shade stated in the video.

I’m only disappointed in this reaction. You see when making this argument people conveniently forget about such actors as Sydney Poitier who was a Dark skinned actor who not only surpassed all the stereotypes, he did so during a time when racism was very prevalent during the civil rights movement. The reason this angers me now is for several reasons. First of all we as black people tear each other down every chance we can get. Now dude isn’t black enough, next he’s too black. I think he has a very heroic look to him despite what shade of black he is. The next reason this pisses me off is because we have a brotha in Tyler Perry who owns studios and we tear him down too, which makes no sense. But back to this color argument, most times it’s our own people who bring up this light skinned vs Dark Skinned argument and it becomes a detriment to our evolution and I’m pretty sick of it so if you want others to respect, we’re going to have to get past the years of social engineering and brainwashing and learn to stop the infighting over subjects such as this within our community and we need to support our own. My dad told me a story once. He was a milkman who owned his own business and the place he got his milk the supervisor said this “ He said you know I don’t worry about you coming in taking our business because your own people don’t stick together and tear each other down.” This was back in the 1970’s and it’s 2024 and it’s still the same thing. THEY MIGHT EVEN MAKE SOME MONEY FOR A CHANGE. Zoey being an petit mixed chick ballet dancer playing Nina was ridiculous. Angela Bassett being pass over for Storm was total bullshit. Storm being played by mixed girls is bullshit. Storm has been dark skin since 1974. Her Blue eyes and white hair marks her as being a mutant. Her father was Foundational Black American and her mother a Black Kenyan princess. Roberto DaCosta was a dark skin biracial Afro Brazilian superhero Sunspot. Over the decades they have lighten him up and cast white hispanics to play him.

As for the way Blacks were colored back in the day was as much due to coloring techniques as it may have been any type of colorism going on. As coloring techniques improved, more brown tones could be done. Gray for dark skin Blacks, literally yellow … which is equally ignorantly offensive.
