@47485ksc9 жыл бұрын
+soaringtractor But all of us aviation nuts will always remember it as the P51. I'm not the aviation expert having only served in the US Army aviation rotary wing (helicopter) at Fort ill's 14th Aviation Battalion. My "birds" consisted of the Bell UH-1, AH1 & OH-58, the Boeing CH-47 and the Sikorsky CH-54 Skycrane. The Skycrane is still used exclusively by nearby (10 miles) Erikson Sky Crane fighting fires worldwide under a different nomenclature but whenever they're circling over the house or I see one, they'll always be a "CH-54" to me. It's the only rotary-winged aircraft I've ever flown in.
@47485ksc9 жыл бұрын
+soaringtractor I'm reminded of this old fart who claimed he flew a P-38 in Korea. He was dead serious! Speaking of Lockheed, my late best friend's late mother worked for Lockheed in Burbank, Ca. during WWII installing the nose cones on the fuselages. She had some funny-ass stories. She was tiny and Lockheed liked her because she could crawl inside the wings and do shit. One of her stories she was working on a Constellation and they pulled her out of it and wanted to test fly it. She told them if they flew it, the tail section would fall off (or wing, can't remember) and they brushed her off. Sure enough, when it landed, it happened. I know it sounds far-fetched but I don't think this lady was smart enough to come up with a fairy tale like that. I was her power of attorney and ended up with all her "stuff" (useless junk mostly) and one goodie was a mint pair of right and left-handed tin snips in a nice metal box. The box had a "Property of Lockheed" metal plate riveted to the lid. Nice aviation collectable! I sold it for $80 I think. Still have a little WWII-era Lockheed "stuff". She died at the age of 97 and was born in 1914.

Those engines powered the P-38, P-39, and P-40. They powered the P-51 until some Brit test pilot said "I wonder what would happen if we stick a Merlin in this thing?" The Allison wasn't a bad engine. Allison was told to not bother developing a supercharger. GE would handle that. GE fell short.

@captaingroovy643411 жыл бұрын
n. woody The V12 engines are definitely becoming as scarce as hens teeth and costing nearly there in gold or at least silver. I remember back in the mid to late 70's about half the unlimited tractors in the US were powered by V12 and the rest were split between Hairdryers and V8 that had there cranks bolted together and timed as 16 cylinders and now and then 24 cylinders engines or some off the wall power plant that the tractor owner dreamed up. Now most all pulling tractors are Hemi V8's of some form or Big Block Chevy's all plumbed together the same way. I am not taking away from the new tractor engineering design but truthfully they don't style and attitude or ingenuity but that is just my opinion and opinion are like certain body orifices everybody has one.

so it's harder to flip it by making the centre of gravity at the front axle closer to the ground.
@iforce2d10 жыл бұрын
mitchamus Hm... is that a definitive answer or just a guess? Seems to me they could just place the axle higher with a larger wheel to keep CoM low. I'm guessing it's something to do with some rules they have to follow.
@MsSomeonenew10 жыл бұрын
Categories are in part determined by weight, that is why the rest is also made of no more then tube frames. And the more weight you save the bigger your engine can be.
@1hvyeqpmnt10 жыл бұрын
My guess would also do with weight savings. But also they can build a more stout, small wheel tire that can live up to all the load being thrust upon them as the front crashes down. So durability and strength.

+Jesus Magana What's the point? Grab a cold one and I'll run the reasons by you. You back? Okay, here goes: It's kind of like NASCAR and NHRA. Drivers tour the "circuit" vying for the most wins, thus winning the most money and the possible title as in "number 1". See, kid, it costs money to run around the country dragging one of these monsters around. You have to pay gas, mechanics, crew members, entry fees, insurance, tires, parts, maintenance, food, motels/hotels, stopping to gamble at the occasional casino, etc. The point? Hundreds of thousands of fans pay good money to watch the action, just like NASCAR & NHRA. Kind of along the lines of ice hockey. People pay to watch. (I once went to a fight and a hockey game broke out!) Anyway, the promoters pay these guys to show up. The promoter divvies up the "gate" (entrance fees paid by the spectators) with the drivers. It's good, clean fun and entertaining as Hell! Kind of why you go watch your monster trucks, kid. You should have known.
