I am so glad we don't have poison oak here in the UK. Woods have been coppiced for hundreds of years, and are an important land management skill, so it's heartening to see you caring for the land like that. Sam, ouch. Those sorts of scrapes can be painful for the first couple of days, but it's highly rewarding once you win the battle. I truly hope you get onto the land full-time soon. You all look so happy there. I can't wait to see if you add a few more animals. Goats would be great for brush clearance. But hey, not my land, not my choice. You do whatever is right for you.

There was an 18century landscape gardener who planted groves of trees, some of which he wanted to grow tall and straight. So he planted other trees close to them that meant the main trees stretched to find the sun. Years later the other trees were cut down leaving the tall, strong ones in a beautiful group. There in Tennessee nature has done this all by herself and now, with your help, there are lovely walks through the woods. Can not wait to see how the rest of this area turns out. 😊😊😊

Former state park naturalist here - soap and water just spreads the poison ivy/oak resins around and increases the area of exposure. The poison (urushiol) is a resin. Responds MUCH better to shop hand cleaner, like Goop or Fast Orange? Made for oils and tars, ya know. I usually do a serious hand cleaner job on areas I feel could have been exposed, and THEN the warm soapy water, to get all the hand cleaner off. And even if you get an itchy spot, go ahead and use the hand cleaner, then wash it off, because scratching also spreads the resin around if not removed. Plus, if you use the kind with pumice, it feels good "scratching" the itch with it, haha! Anyway, this has always worked well for me, and I'm pretty sensitive to that itchy stuff.
@sam-and-angela3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the idea! The soap water did not help!! This was filmed last weekend and we still got quite a bit. We’ll get some cleaner ASAP.

Yes definitely works. A utility company line man told my husband this trick years ago. I also take it one step further and after washing I apply rubbing alcohol. Then I use my homemade plantain salve for the itch , if I still break out.

BUT I'm going to be modifying it soon to fit better for our uses -- I'm putting a ball hitch on the front of it so it stays hooked up better in the really rough terrain and to make it easier to use with our ATV, etc. I'll show that in a video but may be something to think about if you get one. I popped the hitch pin / cotter pin system off a few times and had to go back to reconnect it up.

LOL. Trees fight back sometimes. Here in MA we have to deal with rocks. Global warming after the last ice age was not kind to us. I keep my 6.4 acres Elven. It's a lot of work but burning the brush piles is worth it. I don't know what that rope is leading to your brush mower but you need to tighten that sucker. Almost got caught up under the mower a few times. I need a brush mower like that. $2k for a good unit. Make sure you keep riding that area with your ATV otherwise it will grow back until you get it like my woods. Good job, brother. You have a lot more work to do to get that Elven. I know have 35 acres of woods on two properties to keep like that. It's not easy but it's worth it.
