Hey man, a cool trick to drilling round stock like that is to chuck the drill bit in upside down then lower it down and clamp the bit in the vise. Then chuck the round stock. Kinda like a lathe. I was able to drill an 1/8th" hole in 3/16” aluminum.

Nice ... to address the possible dips etc caused when gringing, I was advised by a knife maker buddy to use a disc sander ... I use an 8.5 inch diameter disc to allow you to use 8.5 x 11 inch sanding paper. A trick is to glue a cork backing to the disc, approx 1/16 inch thick. Once the cork is dry, trim it flush to disc and now you can spray a tack on the cork, place the sheet of sand paper and trim around the disc. Use trimmed off paper for hand sanding or finishing. If you have slight wavering from grinding, the disc sander will take care of it. Once you play with it, this process is awesome. Cheers, great video.

Just a quick tip for drilling (mostly) round stock... load it in your chuck, then center your drill vice on the lowered work. Release the chuck, insert your drill bit and drill that center. As long as your pedestal drill doesn't have a ton of play you should be spot on every time.

I use reclaimed steel almost exclusively (still learning and don't want to spend a bunch of money on my screw ups) and a tip to straightening out coil springs is to use a torch, I use my cutting torch to conserve on gas but a rosebud could do the job if needed. I simply heat the small area up to be straightened then put it in my vice or my hardy hole, get it passable straight and then move on to the next section just above it. After I get enough material relatively straight, I then put it in my forge to get it perfect.

Protip for centredrilling short pieces of round stock: load the workpiece in the drill chuck and clamp the drill bit below. It self-centres much more readily when the workpiece is spinning and the drill bit is static.

Here's a tip I picked up from Ray Kirk when you start isolating your mass with the guillotine tool don't go halfway. Just set it down enough to have a visual of where that junction is, I use a Czech hammer with a well crowned face for pulling down that transition. This give you more meat to pull down directly from the transition rather than having it drop down further away. I used to use a ballpeen hammer to bring that heel down further but now I just use the czech hammer for it. Sometimes I a rounding hammer in the middle of the blade to spread it out much further with much less deliberate strikes with a cross peen, cuz with the rounding side ,no matter how you hit (within reason) it'll quickly spread that steel. I typically forge those out from 3/8 round in about 15 mins but then again I spent a lot of time trying to make it work until Ray showed me some very simple shortcuts. Another trick I use for aligning the spine with the tang is to use a block of steel with a radius ground out for the round stock to set in and then a couple of whacks straightens it out, I only slap the spine of the blade on the face of the anvil for much larger blades or blades that are wider than my block is tall. Sorry for the long comment but I hope it makes sense.
