Man, those 1st gen GMC Sonomas were DAMN hansome. It literally looked like a slighly shrunken version of the full size GMT400 of the time, which is a beautiful truck as well. I love the pre-facelift GMT400 GMC front ends....these Sonomas definitely did a good job representing the GMC design language of the time.

The 1st generation S10/Sonoma were beautifully proportioned then went all curvy 2nd generation, not a fan. The Ranger did the same thing. I had a 1991 Ranger, loved the look. My brother had a 2003 Ranger, ehhh, too curvy again.

You mean second gen? First gen was a 72-89 square body, not a GMT 400, which would be a second Gen Sonoma S15.

I had a 92 GMC K2500 light duty, it wasn't even close to square like the 78K30 I traded it for. Only difference in body style on the first gen was the side markers, the S10-S15 had them on the grill where the fullsize trucks had them on the fenders.

The late 90's Ford Ranger Splash and S10/Sonoma were the rich kids first vehicle where i grew up in small town Alberta. I always thought the splash logo with its litte squirts dribbles looked like ......well, a teenage boy got ahold of it... and the Syclone stickers made their way onto the quarter panel of every little 4 banger chevy pick up in town. A good friend of mine bought a 93 Ranger Lowrider with shaved everything, electric pop doors, a body kit and cowl hood. Great video!

Yeah, the Splash was just a (mostly) 90’s graphic package for the Ranger that carried into the early 2000’s and nothing more. There were no performance upgrades whatsoever, and that pretty much nixes them from any “performance” truck video, especially since the Vulcan 3.0 V6 made all of 147 hp in its highest output.

I saw a Ranger with the 3.0l and 5 speed for sale yesterday. Had no idea they made that. I think the most that's been done to a Vulcan was someone fitting a 3.8 Supercharger to it. That was in a Probe LX 1st gen, I think it had a 5 speed as well IIRC. It was someone's build. Rare combo because the turbo 4 was better than the Vulcan v6

I've never seen a GT, but if GM had released it with a 5 speed and rwd, 195hp 260lbft would've been fun! You could get the 5 speed in the 160hp S10 and they moved decent. Few ordered 1 as such. Neighbor had a 1st gen Lightning in blue for yrs. As I recall, it had a pretty nice exhaust note right from the factory. If 1 looks at the numbers on how close it ran with the 454 ss, obviously it made more power than advertised.

My best friend in HS back in the early 00s had a mid 90s Ranger, couldn't tell you what trim it was. That thing was sweet and oh so 90s, it was a dark purple with some super funky graphics package which we called the Dixie Cup livery. Kinda self explanatory, it looked like those disposable paper cups you used to find everywhere. Probably back about 06-07 I had a coworker who was a big Sy/Ty guy, he owned several mostly Typhoons in his life. One of those he had actually done a 5 speed swap in, and he hated it. He said it made the car slower than with the automatic, I have to assume it was because of the gearing in whatever trans he sourced.

You actually stumped me on the S10 Cameo. Never saw that. Look at the adjusted price on the 454SS and Lightning. Now check the power, MPG, and content. Yes modern trucks are expensive but you get a LOT more for your money. Pound for pound I'd say you get more for your dollar today.

5:56-yes there was. You showed a picture of the 2wd 1993-1994 ford ranger splash but you didn't discuss that model. The splash was/ is a sportstruck. It has very stiff explorer front springs/ shocks and sway bars front and rear. It sits 1-1/2 inches lower than a regular 2wd ranger. And comes with 235/R60-15 Firestone tires. And man it will zing around corners. The fastest version was the standard cab with the 4.0 V-6 and the stick shift with 3.73 rear gear. Everyone that drives or sits in the passenger seat is suprized how fast it will go around a curvey road. In 1995 ford put the splash suspension on some of the regular rangers. So the '93 to '95 splash 2wd model is the fastest ranger they made.

They had to pull the engine *with* the torque converter still attached. I found out firsthand a 5+ years ago why these CPI models seize up. Bought a dead 94 Sonoma for $1000. Spent $700 on a new spider injector, nut kit, starter, tune-up stuff...only to find out it knocked once it warmed up. The engineer who decided to hide the fuel pressure regulator INSIDE the intake plenum was an IDIOT! They eventually leaked and diluted the oil which wiped out the bottom end.

I worked with a guy who had a Typhoon, his pride and joy, kept in cherry shape. He had a second kid so he traded it in… for an Equinox. I don’t care about trucks but jesus man that still smarts. The Vibe he had would have been fine.

The awesome thing about the older cars, you throw 3 to 4 k at them in upgrades, you can add 100 more hp.

I have a '14 5.3, CC 2wd Silverado that I use as a daily driver and occasional tow vehicle, at least for a short while longer (I'm buying a GM '24 2500 as soon as I find the right deal). For towing purposes, I added an intercooled ProCharger. With a towing tune, it puts just over 450 hp and just under 500 ft lbs. to the tires. As far as performance, it blows away any of these trucks (except for the Syclone). That said, I have always been interested in those 80s/90s sport trucks. There's just something about them I like.

Tbh I thought the 80s and early 90's were all piss and potatoes while I Iived through them..😤 But I never realised how seriously good we had it, and how fkn good they actually were..😂 I'd do anything to go back to them times. They were great..😊 Everything was better then. Modern life is rubbish. Lol. It's too modern..😂

Its so crazy to see what these special edition high performance truck of yesterday produce for horsepower and now you can pick up a ram or a ford with a v8 and youve got about 400 horsepower from a base model

My friend in high school had the 454. It was sooo nice and felt quick (for a Junior in high school in 2013 at least) But, I’ve never been in a lightning before. Only ever seen them driving around. What felt quicker to you?

2 things. A Sonoma gt was only .2 seconds behind the 454ss in a quarter mile drag race. And the heads on first gen lighting were not from the gt40. But the gt40 casting, from the h.o. and Cobra mustang engines. Overall a very small mistake, in an otherwise well scripted video. Good job

They have a brand new Lightning, and im not talking about the EV crap. They call it an FP700. The S10's also had a S10 Extreme and the S10 ZQ8 that came out in 1999. I guess you would put that in the 2000s era though.
