On October 9, 2001, greenhorn storm chasers and meteorologists Dave Demko and Don Giuliano headed out from the University of Oklahoma in Norman, with their sights set on a series of supercells in southwest Oklahoma. As they made their way toward a storm to the north of Mountain View in the Wichita Mountains, they spied with their little eyes a large, rain-wrapped blob containing an F-3 tornado. Through the miracles of technology, we bring you a contrast-enhanced look at what it is like to have chased during the (g)olden days, er, “wild west” of storm chasing: no mobile data or radar, no smart phones; with some paper maps, enthusiasm, grit, a good nowcaster (thanks Jim!) and a little luck, one might could land themselves an “after further review” notch on the old belt.
Oh, and several years later, Dave and Don collaborated to create TwisterData.com, a favorite weather forecasting/model website for storm chasers and meteorologists worldwide. www.twisterdata.com/
