It really puts things into perspective when you find something from the 1500’s and realize that the last time the coin was touched was in Medieval times.

Billon is an alloy containing less than 50% silver. The US issued one billon coin, the 1942-45 war nickel. It was also the only US coin to be intrinsically worth more than its face value (at seven cents). Nickel was a vital metal for the WW2 military effort, and the coin received 35% silver instead. Large mintmarks on the reverse were used to distinguish the coins, so they could be pulled out of service and melted down after the war. It turns out that the coins could easily be distinguished after extensive circulation by their dark grey color. Their silver value today is about $1.40 apiece.

Brad, hello from beautiful Colorado! Thank you for sharing your wonderful adventures with Mr Chill Bill! Love his personality as well! I’m just as excited for every single find too. Since my kids were young, I take them on nature walks but have always called it “Treasure Hunting” to keep them interested in being outdoors instead of on electronics but I ask them for their thoughts about our random finds and my son always finds UFO parts where my daughter finds old Barbie living things from back in the day! Lol I keep their treasures in a old 1800’s tin I found..the Treasure Box 😉
