I'm very low on the waiting list and was quite honestly just going to jump at the first allotment I was offered (I live in a flat, no garden) The way I saw things was that any allotment is better than nothing. You've really opened my eyes and prevented me from making an abundance of potential mistakes with your informative video. Thanks for the time and effort you put into to this, you also seem like a really good bloke. Best wishes 👍

Hi Steve, after watching your videos during lockdown i put my name down on the local allotment waiting list. Today i got the call ! I went to view and pretty much everything you said became a reality, baring the weeds were not head height, but knee height as the neighbors had kept on top of it slightly last year. There is nothing salvageable on the plot and is heavy towards the back with brambles. I'm going to take it on and just concentrate this year on clearing the site and getting some paths and raised beds constructed as well as installing a greenhouse and shed for next years season. Your videos where a great inspiration to me and really gave me the boost i needed to do this so huge thanks for your time and effort.

How good of you to share your knowledge with others. It's akin to having a relative go with you when you're buying your first home-you can't beat an experienced eye for spotting problems and possibilities. Would they allow that-say if you knew someone who had an allotment? I'm sure gardeners of all stripes will benefit from this series. We don't have them in the US, just community gardens so the whole idea is interesting to me.

Wish I had seen this before I took on my plot! Excellent advice and tips, most of my questions were answered on the day of viewing back in Feb this year and also since from other plot holders. I also knew what I was walking into security wise as unfortunately on the day of my viewing another plot holder was onsite and had experienced a break in overnight. Made my choice simple for tools, don't leave them onsite.

A word to the wise: not only look for a tap/hose connection but find out how the water lines run. Years ago, I had an allotment with a tap at one end. The problem was the tap was at the end of the line and there was no water pressure whenever any of the other plot holders turned their hose on.

Hi Steve, great video, I’ve just completed my very first season (only in the garden but I have a reasonable amount of space). Even for my garden set up it would’ve been great to have this info. Bed setup and soil fertility is a huge topic I’m still trying to get my head round. I thought my veg would be romping away in the poly tunnel as I’d placed it on lawn (no dig set up) and added blood, fish and bone, compost and even chicken pellets for good measure. Everything looked healthy but always seemed stunted, about 6wks behind everyone else. Despite my veg being sown/planted as per packet instructions or other KZbin suggestions and me liquid feeding as soon as things flowered. I looked at watering and temp in the tunnel but never really fathomed it out. Finally it was suggested that the feed I’d put in was slow release and so not available for months. The plants used what was in the compost and then struggled as there wasn’t much usable fertility in the soil until I began liquid feeding. 🤦🏼‍♀️ who knew 🤷🏼‍♀️ I’m definitely waiting with anticipation for your next instalments to hopefully avoid some other pitfalls 👍🏼
@GreenSideUp
@GreenSideUp 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Karen, yes soil fertility is a big issue and many get it sadly wrong or don't quite understand what is going on. No dig is a great way to grow things, as you probably know I use that myself and have 8 beds setup and I am currently adding seven more this winter ready for next spring. Whilst I am doing this series helping people starting an allotment or veg garden, I will also still be doing the type of videos that I normally do. And I have one or two planned and on my list that should help you Karen, before next spring...Steve...😁👍
@SecrePeach
@SecrePeach 4 жыл бұрын
brilliant, I watch all your videos and the one you did regarding second hand commercial poly tunnels was really good. I’m getting my skills up while I can afford to make mistakes with my time. Im caring for my elderly parents so right now that and Covid is enough to deal with but I plan to go self sufficient in time so loosing a whole season due to inexperience isn’t an option. Thanks so much for your generosity of time, knowledge and experience and I look forward to seeing what you have in store 🙏🏼

Hi Beverley and welcome to Green Side Up, my aim is to make one video a week through the winter giving help to new gardeners, alongside doing my more "normal" videos, skills are translatable from country to country, just sometimes the names change, for example we call it "Soil" here in the UK, but I think you call it "dirt" there...what's in a name!...Steve...😁

Hi Steve, I'm responsible for the website for our allotments. Would you mind if I add links to your series on starting an allotment on our website. I think it will help people tremendously who want to take on a plot. Reminded me of when I took on my plot, I was considering, shade from trees, where the sun rose and set and water, which I cannot fix. I assumed the ground to be exhusted and was full of bindweed, nettles and couch grass, all I could and have fixed. Kevin

Great advice Steve...I found out last year (1st year) after choosing my plot.... furthest from the gate .... that when the land gets wet we can’t drive up to or near our plot 😕as I had no shed then it involved lots of carrying 🥴.....I have my little shed now 😊.....with all the rain we’ve had my access is now shut again, but not so much hassle this year 🤞

Shirt. I've been on the list for 4 years, got an email offering me a 125 M2 and I'm thinking yes! So I replied in about half a second saying I'll take it and acting like I've won the lottery. It is backing onto a railway, I'm going to go and see it first incase it's no good after watching your video. Problem is, if you reject it you go to the bottom of the mega list...dilemma. Should I just accept it and get on with it if it's not the best?
