I’ve had water melon growing off the side shoots so don’t cut side shoots until you know your not getting watermelon off the shoots . I generally cut the side shoots down too a foot past the watermelon that’s in the vine so I wait until they have all mature a little generally two to three watermelons per vine.

Do you recommend this method for pruning melons smaller than 10 lbs? for mini melons and icebox melons, how many per plant Should we expect? I would like good productivity w/out compromising flavor.

Yes you can , most plants typically produce about four melons.. most of the time the plant will just grow more vines and leaves way too much.. The most important thing with watermelon soon as you see a sign of a mellon ,make sure you add fertilizer and keep repeating every one to two weeks. Stick with a water schedule. Watermelon needs a bit more water if you're going to water in the morning. Stick with the morning time..

Yesterday after pruning my cucumbers and Zucchini as you have shown I see the biggest difference in them. This my first year my cucumbers has looked this good. I've already harvest around 8-10 so far and they are delicious (Burpee's Burpless) But you must be reading my mind because afterwards I was watering the (Sugar Baby) watermelon and wondered would you have a video on pruning and here you go. Thank you so much now I have my homework cut out. I have 2 in ky kiddie pool and 4 trailing up my fence with string and then attached to the wire trellis. I've already have 2 babies on each. So I'll definitely keep it trimmed. I'm Zone 8a Hampton Va Happy gardening

Love you informative videos. I used to live in Staten Island NY, so when you say you have a short season, you are spot on! I now live in SC. So my season is longer. I don’t have any ground to make a garden. I am gardening in large pots. I also have a raise garden box that I took of the legs to make it lower to the ground, so it is a long pot. I am growing tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, sugar baby watermelon for the first time. I am using tomato cages to help grow it vertically. I have to water 2 x a day for them to grow. Do you have any advice for me doing it this way, my plant are going crazy and growing amazingly. I also have many green figs in pots. If you would want one let me know. You would just have to pay for shipping. Do you grow figs? They are very good for you n the fruit is crazy. Let me know any info about these . Thanks

Thank you so much. I have never grown figs before.. maybe one year. I will try them.. From your tomatoes cucumbers and peppers growing in a tomato cage definitely highly recommend you must prune if you do not prune out some of the lower leaves or the suckers which is the side shoots it will get overcrowded.. If you're watering two times a day, it must be really hot...🥵 I believe once you do a light pruning you control the water and just keep up with your fertilizer every two weeks and you should definitely have a good growing production... Large pots are very good to grow into but you're right if it's super hot You're definitely right. There will be more water .. You could also prune your sugar baby watermelon ... Pruning helps a lot. You get a better air flow, less chance of disease and a better growth production overall.. I hope the weather gets better for you and your garden. Hang in there and keep up with a great job

If you have good weather and time ,, let them grow .. Just keep adding fertilizer every 2 weeks , and give enough water stick to a water schedule.. watermelon requires more fertilizer and water , bigger and tasty watermelon 🍉... Hey bro the Vine that my watermelon is attached to is getting thin closer to where the root is. And it's the main stem, i cut off all the side shoots already. What is causing this and how to get the stem thick again.

That could be caused by many reasons. Make sure your watermelon is getting enough water every 2 to 3 days. Make sure it's getting enough fertilizer extra calcium.. Make sure the plant is getting about 8 to 10 hours of sunlight.. Prune off some leaves around the roof area to get better air flow... Add fertilizer every 2 weeks..

What happens if you cut the apex of the main stem? Will it stop growing in length and produce fruit?

If you cut off the main stem it will still grow to whichever side shoots Vine growing .. Some of the side shoots will only grow male flowers and some will grow male and females... And yes, any side shoots that are growing will produce...

Last year I grew my first cantaloupes. Every single one died or rotted. I followed all of the pruning and other caretaking videos I could find tending to that small crop of four plants. This year. I put the same soil mixture into a raised bed, stuck some Amazon seeds in the dirt and added some fertilizer and of course watered them. I've cut off some dead leaves here and there but other than that, nothing. For the past few weeks I've been eating cantaloupes that are near candy. I've been eating cantaloupes for 70 years and never had any this good. I'll bet there is a mile of unpruned vines in that raised bed, AND it looks like I'm going to get a second crop since they've bloomed again and I've got new baby cantaloupes on those old unpruned vines. You won't catch me pruning them ever again.

I have had four watermelons grow all with tips that turned black. It hurt my heart to throw them out. I added fertilizer but still got black tips. It doesn't work the best on watermelons because the lack of pollen but here's a nifty life hack I came up with. Most grasses have tiny hairs on their stems that resemble the hairs on a bee's body and pick up pollen really well and can be used similar to a cotton swab but better, free, and grows near the plant already usually.

I highly recommend putting something underneath.. a piece of plywood, rubber mat. Whatever you got do not put cardboard , It's always good to protect watermelon.. and congrats!!! That is super awesome... Backyard watermelon are the best !!!!!

Help. I planted cantaloupe for the first time. I put 2 6’ tomato cages over 2 plants to vine upwards. I never expected what happened. Plants have grown like crazy. They out grew those cages quickly. I can’t even find the main stem. How can I trim them back..or just let them grow across the ground? I follow you and trust what you say.

Oh yea tomato cage is way too small, butternut squash grows over 10ft and grows lots of side shoots..try to find the root area where the plant begins, to prune off some , if you can't then the best way just let it run on the ground, this way you could still get some harvest .. thank you 🙏🏾🌱

Do you allow more than one watermelon per vine. I've seen videos that say to prune off the vine just after the first watermelon because two melons on the same vine will cause both melons to suffer. What is your take on this practice. Also, how many vines to you allow per plant? It looks to me like you allow only one main vine. Thanks in advance for your response.

So I normally remove two to four , I normally leave a couple of vines as the plants grows longer.. If one vine grows two watermelon, I do not remove them because the plant sometimes only produces 2 to 4 watermelon.. If I have about 3-4 watermelon growing off the main stem then I prune out all the vines.. To me that just energy wasting and it will take a longer time to ripen up the watermelon.. .

You could sprinkle some fertilizer on top of the soil which is the root of the plant or remove some of the soil and add some fertilizer on the need covered back up with the soil and then water... Try to place a piece of plywood on the need of your watermelon. Keeping it off the ground. Try to keep your garden clean.. You could do a mix of Hydrop peroxide and water in a spray bottle... It helps get rid of maggots....

Thank you! I have a question: I have 3 pea sized sugar baby watermelons on vines about 2 feet long. Growing in 10 gal grow bag. We just started getting consistent sun this week after almost daily showers since spring (zone 5 Western Massachusetts). The seed was planted in later spring. more? I'm worried that I'm running out of time for it to grow and ripen enough. Best case scenario first frost date is early October. Should I prune back heavily to help the plant put all its energy in the babies or let it keep growing?

Sorry to hear that. I would definitely do a heavy pruning that will speed it up. It's better so the energy flows to watermelon 🍉🙏🏾🌱

Looks really nice BUT you'd make it so much easier on yourself by growing upwards. A conduit trellis is relatively cheap and easy to make (a 2 ft rebar in the ground (or whatever rods you have lying around), 1/2 in trellis over that joined at the top with a PVC T and back down another PVC T joint and conduit ending with rebar). Then do what you're doing up a string and support the melons with pantyhose or mesh like the bag you get oranges in. Two years ago I bought a pack of 10 Walmart knee high stockings, cut them in half and use them as hammocks, washing them at the end of the season. No chance of anyone stepping on your plant. Charles Dowding has a couple videos growing cantaloupe up a string. As soon as a melon has been pollinated he cuts off all but an inch or two of that sideshoot ending up with a stem loaded with nearly a dozen melons on it--just like they do with cucumbers but much more cool to look at. I grow my melons and watermelons vertically too but I haven't done such heavy pruning before. Can't wait til next year! Happy gardening!

Your welcome! So that Could probably be a pollination problem. Maybe it didn't pollinate.. ( that's the main reason) there's always a chance that the plant needs more fertilizer or your watering is off.. .. Try to keep up with fertilizer one to two times a month , and water every 2 to 3 days. Unless it's in the high 80s the 90° then you water everyone to 2 days.. 🙏🏾🌱 and thank you so much 🌱
