Depends on what your objective is to having a rocket stove. When built right they put out a great deal of heat with a much smaller fuel requirement. You are right that the carbon output still exists, but the principle is that burning (for example) 1lb of fuel per hour versus 4lbs per hour will be much more economical and will only emit a quarter of the carbon per hour of use. Me, I just want to build one because I'm a cheapskate and don't want to store a massive supply of firewood.

I have lived in the Philippines for years and they make the same thing poured concrete hollow in the middle with a metal liner on the outside and 3 bent pieces of rebar to hold the pot. It costs about $2 wood branches are a renewable resource and people have been living for decades in areas that I lived in and there is no deforestation. He never defines how efficient the stove is... This is just a feel good hit piece for over educated hippies in the 1st world to watch ....

I see a few people on here saying it would be better to print up instructions for people to source the parts locally & build it themselves. As they point out,that would avoid having to use the fuel to ship them & the emissions resulting from that shipping. That would also help poor villages that can't afford to buy one. I have built several of these stoves for camping & they work fine so long as you get the basic idea down. The efficiency will change drastically though. A poorly designed stove,while it may work fine will need notably more fuel to operate. That would be a problem if people made their own. They won't be able to find ideal material,they won't get measurements correct etc. Very simply they won;t be optimized for efficiency. The mass produced stoves are,on average,much more efficient than someone making their own & the increased efficiency will more than make up for any emissions produced from shipping it. For areas that won't be able to afford one yes,a simple set of directions on how to build one will help. Even if what they build isn't ideal it's probably better than what they are currently doing.

You could buy one of those for $100 or you could pay $10 for a 4" elbow and 24" x 4" piece of metal ducting and get the exact same thing. I'm sure they can find some rocks to prop it up. I made my own out of 4" ducting with 2-Tconnectors a 24" pipe and a 4"-6" expander with a 6" cap. Put the cap in the expander and fill it with rocks, put a T-conector in it with the hole on the side with the other end of the pipe going up, fit the 24" pipe into the top of the T and the last T in with hole up.

True. However, printing a "cartoon" how-to pamphlet on recycled paper (or even one with real pictures) is hela-cheaper, and would reach more people, more cost-effectively, faster, and be made from local materials, meaning that there are no transportation side effects and costs, because the pamphlets can be printed locally, as well.

I see your point, but if the real goal here is to reduce emissions put out by people in poverty then this seems like a small and temporary solution, perhaps providing a renewable source of clean burning fuel would be more orientated towards the goal.

I'm astonished at the negative views on this video. My main gripe is that it isn't being locally made, but people should realize the vast amount of resources being used simply for cooking including labor in gathering fuel. When people move to urban areas and convert to charcoal, they use far more resources because 70% of the heat energy is lost in converting wood to charcoal. Look at Haiti's environmental situation, which has been largely caused by cutting trees for cooking fuel.

I have found that doing something because it is wise just isn't as "sexy" as having a cause. Having a cause has the potential to elevate you as an "alpha" attracting the attention of the ones you want to notice you. I think a better solution would be an electric solar stove that doesn't use up our natural resources, the cost can be subsidized by their governments
@Phoen1x8838 жыл бұрын
+Ellie James Electric solar isn't really the way to go. Your typical solar panel is about 15% efficient, so right away you're wasting 85% of your energy as heat in the panel itself. Next, you need to figure out how much area you'd need for the panels to provide enough electricity. I'm guessing the minimum for a small stove would be about 250w (campers and the like, feel free to correct me), and as most panels provide around 20 watts per square foot, you'd need a little over 12 sq. feet of solar panel to provide that. Solar panels need to be mounted in direct sunlight, kept free of obstructions and dust, are made of easily-broken glass, and according to some quick eBay searching, cost about $250 for the amount of power we need. We could use a much smaller panel and store the energy in a battery if they're not using the stove for more than 15-30 minutes at a time (a reasonable assumption), but now you need a heavy, lead and acid filled battery that needs to last for years with no maintenance, and hope they don't throw it in a landfill near their water supply if it stops working. For cooking with solar energy, the best way to go is with solar cookers, simple devices with curved or angled reflective pieces that reflect incoming sunlight towards a central point where you hang a pot. They take a while to heat things up, but they're incredibly cheap. Granted, both of these depend on it being daytime and not cloudy, which isn't always the case when you're hungry. The stoves in this video seem like a good complement to solar cookers, and I bet a mixture of the two would reduce their fuel use substantially and still let them cook whenever they needed to.
@1TheNews8 жыл бұрын
+Phoenix, solar panels are becoming more efficient and cheaper. I'm hoping soon they can invent a small solar stove that only needs one panel. I just saw another video about more enhancements to solar. Until then, these stoves are options to preserve our precious natural resources

He's right, it would be a good investment. Industrialized countries waste trillions of dollars on stuff that does far less to benefit the public. I pay taxes here in the USA, where our government just put a match to about 28 billion dollars when they shut the government squabbling over our health care laws. That much lost economic activity is equivalent to the price of a gift of stoves for around 322 million people at $87 each. It benefits the rich, too, with less greenhouse pollution.
