A study of shihonage with Shoji Nishio Sensei.
"The common method of shihonage has a problem. In most aikido this cannot be used in a real fighting situation... Of course there is always punching and kicking in martial arts. So if you can't defend against that it's not good... First we have to make our position such that we can't be attacked." ~Shoji Nishio Shihan

I saw him at the Japanese Culture center on the west side. At the time I was transitioning from Tohei Aikido to Nishio Aikido. Both Aikido but very different from each other. I made sense and was practical. Thank you for this video.

Very admire of nishio Sensei aikido. His aikido is 1% out of 100 % of really facing the reality

@@GreenwoodAikido because Nishio Sensei said most of aikido practitioners (above 90%) do in another way. I am quite agree with him. He is as valuable as 1 % of treasure can be found on Earth. Most aikido practitioners can’t face the truth that the people can punch or kick and only live in the fascistic of their mind for peace and harmony. He was great with no doubt

@@thkun33 Oh, I understand now! Thanks for explaining. I agree with you 100%. Nishio Sensei's approach to aikido really shows how to deal with reality and also express the philosophy of aikido at the same time. Thank you!

If we can't strike back in Aikido, what's the purpose of sticks and swords?

The founder of aikido, Morihei Ueshiba, regularly used jo and bokken in his expression of aikido as well. It's an expression of katsujinken.

Regarding this Nishio Sensei borrowed a quote from Isaiah of turning "swords into plowshares." By this he meant changing the sword from a tool of destruction into a tool to preserve and nurture life. You take an interaction that might otherwise lead to injury or destruction and seek a path of mutual coexistence without cutting the opponent. In this sense, the sword is a personal study, not focused on defeating an opponent, but rather on purifying ones own aggression and cultivating a generous and forgiving spirit.

But o sensei did not invent Aikido based on biblical principles or I would not be seeing the aikidokas consistently bow their knees to the dead old man's picture.

You are correct. Nishio Sensei appropriated the phrase in an effort to communicate across cultures. Aikido grew out of Japanese budo and O Sensei's own personal beliefs were largely rooted in Shinto mythology. However, there is nothing inherently religious about aikido itself. As far as bowing goes, in Japanese culture it's as common as breathing so there's nothing inherently religious about it. If there is enough about aikido practice that conflicts with your own beliefs then it may not be for you. It doesn't follow that you should disparage others who don't share your views.
