Several people have been asking why Scott and I traveled 3 1/2 hours one way to get a cow from you. Because we want what you are talking about on our farm. She is a proven breeder and Scott is thrilled he can pet her if he wants too. By the way Judy is fitting in well with the herd.

Keep the education process ongoing Greg. Ranchers had drifted so far away from the prolific bison herds, God had given us for free.

Thanks for the video! I was talking to someone who show cattle. I know he spends a lot of money every day for his show animals. Ouch! I like my smaller animals because they are easier to handle even though they are docile. I don’t need fancy equipment or super tall fence to work with them.

This year we got about the same price for calves 75lbs heavier then others. Same with some family in Colorado. Only the difference was 100 lbs.

Just now checked Missouri Weekly Feeder Steer prices for October 30th, out of 18,500 head sold (500 lb steers brought $2.79 a pound, 665 lb steers brought $2.49 a pound) That's $30 a hundred weight premium for the lighter steer.

Often thought this before when Greg has laid this out: If you’re selling your own product you also get 50% more (… as in number of steaks) prime cuts.

The big cows which are bred to have big calves are more likely to have dead calves. Weaning weights on calves born dead are not good.

Genetics have changed birthweights a lot in recent years. Moderate and low birthweight cattle are very common so this is not the norm and I would be careful generalizing this. Ideally you want low birthweights that will grow well. I really like these cattle and have grown all kinds over the years but southpolls are not going to get the best prices as commercial cattle at the sale barn. Greg missed that here that you have to produce for your market.

@@sodbuster5223yes, you must cater to your market. Calving ease bulls lack your herd's epigenetics. We used calving ease bulls in our virgin heifers

The calving ease bulls' sexed semen threw heifers about 95% of the time. These holstein females usually did ok. The beef cross bull calves did much better.

In all fairness to the contentious Canadian you have to remember climate matters. All other factors equal larger animals are more efficient in cold weather (and less in hot) than small ones. Your cows have a lot higher surface to volume ration than his. This means they will cool faster and need more feed per pound in cold weather. On the other hand, his cows would have to lay up in shade during MO summers, while yours could graze non-stop.
@larrywilliams9139
@larrywilliams9139 Жыл бұрын
@@tedbastwock3810 The Surface Volume Ratio is one factor in wildlife size but not the only one. For good and ill larger animals lose heat more slowly than smaller ones for geometric reasons. SVR is probably a significant factor in optimum livestock size but feed cost and price per pound could swing economic returns either way. Greg has probably found a near perfect size for his climate, market and feeding program.

Having to go to the sale barn, they will dock you for the smaller frame calf’s. I prefer the 1,000-1,100 lb cows myself. South Poles like dexters and highlands are a niche market. Make sure you have a market for them otherwise the sale barn will dock you.

You should never set up any marketing platform that allows someone else to market your livestock. You are a price taker at that point, not a price setter like you are when you direct market them. Is is more work to direct market your animals? Absolutely but it is worth the extra work it takes to do it.
