Mind if I ask why there seems to be a cow with a docked tail right in the 6:40-6:50 time frame?
@movinon12423 жыл бұрын
I cannot answer for that particular animal, but its not unheard of for a cow, or more likely a calf, to get stepped on while it is laying down in the grass. Legs and tails are at greatest risk. So if a 1,200 lb bull is chasing down a cow in heat and steps on a calf's tail, that tail or leg could easily be crushed beyond repair in a worst case scenario. He certainly doesn't dock his animal's tails as standard practice.

We usually have twelve days of rainfall on average during July in our part of the province with about a total of three and a half inches of rain Elsa brought that much to the city on her travels through the province, and dropped a lot more in Moncton as a good bye gift. I am so glad that she wasn’t leaving snow behind her. Yesterday I forgot to mention that Alice used to bring her clothes downstairs to the kitchen to get dressed while standing on a chair . The air was warmer elevation does make a difference. Oh the joys of a wood burning furnace Dad said that it kept him warm cutting and stacking the wood, loading the furnace and emptying the ashes. When I left the village in 79 they moved too. To a converted school house that didn’t have a bathroom it had four out houses well three out houses and one that had been built in the non renovated part of the school .. one of the former teachers named the school Bleak hill academy I don’t think he was impressed by the facilities. Dad and Mum renovated the whole building they hadn’t finished the upstairs bathroom when Dad broke his ankle so Mum finished it by herself. The third born daughter would not use it until Dad okayed the job. Oh she of little faith? Included in their renovations were electric baseboard heaters and a fireplace, perhaps I have already told you about Mum telling the electrician who was installing the new electrical box that he had made a mistake. I certainly had a do it yourself Mum. Early training, observation ,talent , a can do attitude ,determination ,I wonder what else I can add. Plenty of mentors and aptitude? I have the hundred year old electricity book that had once been owned by her uncle Walter so likely she absorbed a lot by shadowing him . I have enjoyed watching this episode and seeing Grandma! 🖖🖖🖖👍👍👍🙋🏼♀️♥️

I've been wondering if one were to graze a couple horses after the cows/ sheep, would/ could you get a closer/ more even graze? I've got a lawn to mow but the landowner likes it at ~2" tall. What do you think?
@Digger9273 жыл бұрын
Well, I guess the drawback to a successful and long lived breeding program is eventually (with any luck) you're going to have trouble deciding who to keep and who needs to go because they are all so good. That's a nice problem to have, we should all be so fortunate to find ourselves in that position. Lol, I'd never complain about the price you get out of your stock. I don't have to buy it, if I want to pay for it, I'd expect to have to pay for your years of good management practices. $10k for that doesn't seem that high to me (if I could afford it). Good for you for getting dividends from your years of hard work and dedication.

What about soil compaction?
@gregjudyregenerativerancher3 жыл бұрын
There have been millions of ruminant animals grazing the landscape for thousands of years. Soil does better with hooved animals massaging the soil surface.
@movinon12423 жыл бұрын
If you watch some videos from Gabe Brown, Ian Mitchell Innes and Alan Savory, you learn that the main cause of soil compaction is tillage, monoculture and lack of ruminant animals. Running 2,000 lb animals in one field for days at a time will most certainly lead to compacted soil. But if you go with the smaller animals that nature gave us, move them regularly, and keep them out of soft bottom land during heavy precipitation, only good things can happen. There are other factors, of course, but the fellows I mentioned above really get into the science of regenerative agriculture.

I was thinking the heifer looks like a guernsey more than a jersey. We got about a little less than three quarters of inch last night. The forecast says chance of rain for 3-4 days. It is still dry here but it is looking better as the rain falling. I’ve been mowing my lawn since June 11. Tomorrow July 12 or it could be July 13 because i have a small patch they haven’t grazed yet this year by our house. I usually mow it because it is hard to graze in that area but I’m going to try. I think I will be moving them off the lawn and back to where they started grazing the first round. It was May 9 was the last time it was grazed. Since it was so dry here, the lawn made our pasture recover some. One question for you, we have a nice red clover patch that is looking like it needs to be grazed before it starts to go dormant from seeding. Would you graze it now or wait until you are there for the normal grazing rotation? It is 90 percent red clover. I think I would do little at a time because I worry about bloating and high in protein runny manure. I would do it over 2-3 days. Thanks for all your videos!

Anyone complaining about $10,000 for your best bull is more than welcome to start with a $2,000 bull and spend a decade or two building up their herd's genetics to get their own version. On the flip side, they can put in some legwork and find some south poll ranchers who don't have a massive internet following, and get an equivalent animal for considerably less.
