Cliff, we recently purchased some 3/4 south polls through Greg. I have to agree how amazing the impact and regrowth is after just one time of intensive grazing. It’s amazing to see the transformation in such a short time. We rested the majority of our pastures this spring and summer after purchasing the ranch in Dec. 2021. Since I only had some horses I clipped my pastures once in spring then once in June and then what followed was a historic drought in South Central Missouri. During said drought I applied 2 tons/ac of lime praying we might once again see rain. Just 4 weeks ago this place was very brown but, we pulled through amazingly well after just a couple of small rains. We focused on just putting down as much carbon as we could all season to protect the bare soil. The carbon additions paid off quite dramatically. This place had been continuously grazed for a millennium. We have recently been receiving compliments from old timers who said it’s never looked so good and we’ve only been practicing RA this year. We have been documenting our journey on our own KZbin channel. My wife and I spent 5 days on Greg’s farm right before starting this new life on a ranch/farm. I have to agree that Greg is a wealth of knowledge and a great man for so passionately trying to spread the word of Regenerative Agriculture! I’m a total believer! I haven’t attended his grazing school yet but we will this spring. Also, great videos. I really enjoy them and you have some very fine looking animals. God bless, Wes

Greg's grazing school was the best conference type deal I've ever attended and I've gone to several. Your crosses look great and that bull is fine. I wonder why south polls seem to have such a big naval bump?
@cliffhonnasregenerativerancher3 жыл бұрын
The navel bump is coming from the cow side of the equation. There is some Brahman influence in the mama cow’s lineage that came through in the calf.
@Digger9273 жыл бұрын

Hi Cliff since you are in Texas do you think South Poll will work in West Texas? we have a place west of Del Rio and thought of a few heads of Criollo cattle to start with. Thank you, M
@cliffhonnasregenerativerancher3 жыл бұрын
Hi Michael, I definitely think they will work in Texas. Teddy Gentry bred them with heat tolerance as one definite goal. These cattle are 1/4 Senepol which is a breed known for heat tolerance. In addition, they have great reproductive efficiency, are very docile, and milk good. When my black cows are in the brush during the day to escape the heat, my South Poll bulls are often out grazing. I’m getting 5 bred South Poll heifers next month, so will know more shortly. Good luck!

I’m considering coming to Texas to ranch and homestead. I keep hearing about the hog epidemic that is wrecking fences, feed plots, etc. Has is it been a problem for you pasture ranching endeavor? Any advice on interesting possible locations would also be appreciated. Thank you.
@cliffhonnasregenerativerancher3 жыл бұрын
The feral hog problem is indeed a problem in certain areas. I have had hogs on my place but the damage is usually minimal. There are areas where they will absolutely destroy pastures. Talk to the locals wherever you are considering buying property to see what the situation is in that locale. It’s a huge problem for sure.

MO gets way more rain versus central Texas, plus I do not believe he is dealing with massive feral hog numbers. Many management issues are different and require different expectations.

Interestingly, the weather records from Columbia. Missouri indicate they get 44”/year. Our rainfall here is around 40”/year. So not a ton of difference. The 5 year average at my house has been 40.5”.
