I remember the race at Fontana like yesterday. I recall Dr. Olvey's emotions too. I was just "Naw, Naw -This can't be real", As a lifetime Indycar fan - you never forget. A shame the series was fractured and Greg never got to compete in the Indy 500. We were ALL robbed of that. RIP Greg Great Tribute MG Motorsport!

Yea I was 11, and we were out all day, so I was excited to see how the race went on RPM2night. Needless to say, I went to bed with tears in my eyes. I am a big hockey fan, so I loved rooting for the Canadian rocking 99 on his car.

I love that James Hinchcliffe carried Greg's memory through his racing career…with Greg's red racing glove in his racing suit, and the blue and gold racing motif on his helmet. I always had the greatest respect for Greg's family who supported him all the way. Such a tragic way to lose one of our Canadian racing heros . 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦

I saw Greg M doing a walk and talk in the pits at the Milwaukee Mile. Suddenly he stopped and ran over to a very elderly gentleman in a wheel chair. He shook his hand and held it. They conversed for a few minutes, then Greg went back to the interview.

As a 17 year old when we lost Greg, it solidified my future career as an engineer, and it is still an painful 23 years later as it was that day in 1999. I was fortunate to see Greg race in 1997 and 1998 at Laguna Seca. RedGlovesRule

Canadian motor sports fans were getting excited about the quiet young man from Van. Having our own modest working class guy on the West coast excited Vancouver fans, especially who were tired of the sports Eastern bias. Nice guy from a nice family with a lot of talent. Such a loss.

I was there that day in Fontana, and we saw Greg come out of the infield care center after the pit bike accident. He just started to pull away and make eye contact with my wife and gave her a big smile.I'll never forget that. What a great racer and most important a great guy!

Thank you for this great tribute. Greg is my favourite driver of all time. As a Canadian racing fan I couldn’t be more proud of not only the gifted driver Greg was but also the fine young man he was off the track and how he did our country so proud. He really was special and it’s easy to see why so many of his peers speak so highly of him. October 31, 1999 is a day of heartbreak I’ll never forget. I never cried for the loss of someone I didn’t know personally but I cried that day and still get emotional when I think of him and what should’ve been. It’s hard to put into words how much he meant to me but I paid tribute to him in the best way I could later in my life. When my wife had our first child back in 2005 we named our son after him. Red Gloves Rule! See you at the front You’ll forever be missed Greg Rest In Peace

Was watching his final race late at night at home from Australia . Even that quick cutaway to his accident just before the car flipped and hit the wall was enough to know that was un survivable . Felt bad for his family at the race.

I'm also Aussie and 99 created my love for all things CART inspired. What a surprise to hear another Aussie speak glowingly of Greg and bring up aspects selfishly I thought were only my own. I still keep an eye on the races, but not as much as when I'd cheer for GM and try to emulate him in ICR2.

Thanks very much for making this tribute to Greg.i really appreciate that his skill as well as his character was recognized so far from his home and a Greg Moore lifetime beyond his tragic passing! Living as i did in Vancouver for over 30 years and throughout Greg's all too short lifetime, local media followed his rise to excellence in so many levels of motorsport. Given that Maple Ridge British Columbia is a suburb of Vancouver, i drove by Rick Moore's Maple Ridge Chrysler frequently and this always of course brought that kind, focused, skilled and charismatic young man to mind. Unfortunately I only saw him drive in an Indy Lights race once, as a part of the 1995 (i think) Vancouver Indy CART race weekend. 'Gone but not forgotton! One of the Canadian Great Ones! (Totally coincidentally Wayne Gretzky of Canadian hockey fame, used number 99 from the beginning of his childhood hockey caree forward through being recognized as perhaps the most skilled in his chosen field of endeavour as well!) 🇨🇦 🍁 🇨🇦

My wife and I crashed the Budweiser party after the 1997 Indy Car awards event in Detroit. We had the great fortune to speak with many of the people that made that series work, owners, crew members, tech folks and a hand full of drivers including Greg. Was able to chew the fat with him for while and never felt he was looking to brake off for a better conversation, just a relaxed and personable young man....yup, a great guy he was.

I was 14 when this happened. I had only been a fan for a year or so and choose Greg as my favorite because he was so young. I still remember the feeling when they announced he had died and showed his picture. 14 year old me wanted it so bad to just be a tv show and not be real. Sadly that was the end of my racing fandom and I never really watched again. Great man, great driver, and he will always be this little boys favorite.

I was fortunate to have had the opportunity to spend time with the Galles and Penske teams as an acquaintance of Al Jr. in those days. I remember Greg coming up to me at a winter test session to ask questions of me regarding refractive eye surgery because he wanted to get away from wearing glasses if possible. He happened to be at that winter '94/'95 test to get a shakedown opportunity with Penske. There was also a Firestone tire commercial being filmed that weekend. So, if you ever saw that Firestone commercial of Roger, Rick and Al during the 1995 season, there are a few scenes of Al on track in the Penske car. But, it was Greg in Al's helmet doing his shakedown during some of that filming!

Yes. Rest in peace Ninety-Nine. This video is terrific, thank you for doing such a touching job and your effort to show everyone how naturally great young Greg really was. I am in British Columbia, Canada and so lucky to have seen him race at the Molson-Indy here (in the junior ranks). I even spotted him walking in the Paddock afterwards too. I was watching all the races back then and like so many fans witnessed the crash on TV. Years later I looked for books and videos to learn more about our young brave Canadian star. Never forgotten, I think we lost someone special beyond words. Good work Sir.

I was at Fontana that day down by turn one. Got to spend a few minutes talking with him at Longbeach that same year. Very awesome guy. I wanted to see what he could do in a Penske. He was one of the reasons I wanted to get into go kart racing.

great driver but even nicer person at Nazareth i was walking around in the pits area when went past his tent i said hello Greg how you doin' ?and replied "great , how are you" and grabbed a poster and autographed it for me ( i still have it in good shape) I had not asked for anything , i was also watching the race on tv when he died i was so said and miss seeing him on the track to this day , will never forget him , R.I.P. I know everyone always wants to talk about how he shouldn’t have been racing that day, but that’s asking Greg to not be Greg. We all loved to watch him race and admired him so much because of who and how he was as a person and a racer, and understanding that is why I wouldn’t change a thing. I grew up near Maple Ridge and went to the Vancouver Indy many times and had the pleasure of meeting him twice as a young fan and he lived up to every expectation. Humble, kind and willing to give so much time for his fans while still driving the wheels off the car every weekend. He is missed but never forgotten and a great role model for generations to come as an example of a truly spectacular driver.

I watched the race live and as i saw the crash i feared heavily what became truth. I decided i didnt want to see any motorsport event ever again. I didnt succeed in that, i kept watching, but always missed Greg Moore. It was so brutal and sad. There is one picture a winning driver climbs a fence pointing at the installed Greg Moore AV iirc. That gave shivers. Now i have a 1:18 scale car from his 99 season. It is special to me and will always have a special place in my showcase

I was fortunate enough to witness Greg's entire career in the top flight (96-99) and there's no doubt he would have achieved massive success. Thanks so much for this memorial. I got to meet and chat with Greg at Nazareth in ‘95. I asked him if will race the Indy 500 someday and he said “I hope so” Sad that his first opportunity would’ve been with Penske and the ride that went to Helio - who made the most of that opportunity. I raced low level karts with the Player’s paint scheme and of course #99 - she was a beauty #redglovesrule #seeyouupfront

I vividly remember when Gille Villenueve was killed during practice, I couldn't believe it. I was watching the news the day they announced Scott Brayton was killed at Indy. I didn't believe it at first as I had just watched him qualify at Indy a few days earlier. I was watching the race live when Greg had his fatal accident and knew immediately no one could survive that accident. I was also watching the Jeff Krosnoff and Dan Wheldon accidents live on T.V. I am still saddened after all these years over the loss of so many talented drivers who wanted nothing more than to just race. I'm sure Greg Moore would have been a champion with Team Penske. R.I.P. Gille, Scott, Greg, Jeff, Dan and all the other racers who passed too soon.

I remember watching replays of races in 2003 and the race which Greg was taken was on. I had since forgotten in an alcohol fueled early twenties which race he crashed and I was keen to relive him. As soon as he started sliding I knew instantly which race it was and then I had to go through the emotions again

I supported Greg Moore a bit as a kid because of Cart precision racing on PC because his car looked cool and my hairstyle was like his, was more An F1 fan at the time but watched alot of CART/NASCAR races on Foxtel with dad 98-2003

Excellent tribute so very-well-done. Yes, Paul Page was outstanding, and Moore was an awesome, totally complete driver; and I'd add Dave MacDonald to the great driver list, too. Dave lost his life in that 1964 Indy 500 crash that also took the life of Eddie Sachs. Thank you for your effort on Greg's life.

He was fine to race. As oer, Richy hern made same mistake. Lots of crosswinds that day. It was normal back then to accelerate into a spin to drive away from wall. Unfortunately it gripped and sent him into wall. Many drivers such as Dario all agree he was ok to drive that day.

I was at California speedway the day he passed. I didn’t know that he wouldn’t make it until I saw the accident on the jumbo screen. There was no way, with the way he hit the inside barrier that he was going to be OK. The accident was only shown once. The rescue team worked on him getting him to the helicopter. About 30 min after he left the track the flags were at half mast😥 I knew then what happened. Sad day. Felt bad for his family and friends as well as the other drivers that had to keep going. Greg was one of the most liked drivers in the paddock.

I'd need to go ind the book, but Greg passed the tests CART put him through an they didn't have a reason to stop him racing. I wish they had found a reason. There's a picture from a while after that shows the skid marks in Turn 2 and it always made me wonder what really happened that day since Ritchie Hearn also had a massive crash in the same turn too

Man, I remember reading about him signing for Marlboro Team Penske and he was going to drive one of the iconic red and white CART IndyCars. Sadly it was not meant to be. Greg's crash led to paving of the back straight turn 2 infields at both Fontana and MIS and indirectly to the eventual development of the halo in F1 and the halo/aeroscreen in IndyCar. To this day I wonder if the halo would have saved his life!?

No. The halo/aero screen would not have made any difference in that crash.

​​@@johnjettfothergill4231 i know when the halo was originally being designed, engineers did reference Moore's crash. It is designed to withstand 125kN of force, an equivalent of 12 tonnes of weight. I have absolutely no idea how that compares to the accident at Fontana.

Those halo’s would have to be VERY strong to take the car flying through the air at an excelled rate of speed hitting the top of the cockpit.I saw it happen live. There were parts going everywhere.
