Great idea for a video. I think it would be cool to zoom out a bit with royal beards and look at all the great examples of facial hair in other royal lines.

Bless you from the UK Greg. I live in a town (Bognor Regis in West Sussex) where George 6TH took convalescence in his later life. The sea air was seen as a good tonic to poor health! Even the late Queen accompanied him there once as a child! Could one of the fellas for the Alliance do a bit on beard brush, comb, clipper and other beard care apparel cleaning regime. Ive noticed a few mates who wear medium beard and they often complain their brush is smelly and its a good point. Some guys, Myself included actually brush out their beards in the morning or at night before bed and it still has a fair bit of product on it. This can indeed make the brush quite stinky. Its clearly down to dead skin and oils and often old product like beard balm and such, Anyway. Great video as per. I hope this comment finds you and you family well safe and happy.

Learning about all this history makes you wonder why it was so rebellious and reviled to have a beard in the 60s when beards have gone in and out of style since the dawn of mankind. They’ve just started to make a full comeback now which is something I hadn’t noticed before but that’s a really good thing and I’m glad it’s happening!

The picture of the man shown briefly after the photo and reference to Queen Victoria is not Prince Albert, her husband. The photo is of Prince Albert Victor, the Duke of Clarence (a grandson of Queen Victoria).

Indeed he was the eldest son of King Edward VII but who died young. His younger brother therefore inherited the throne as King George V.

Also I believe the photo of King Charles III (with a white beard) is probably a fake.

You left out Kaiser Cousin, Wilhelm. He started out with the upturned mustache but after his abdication, let it droop and grew a goatee that looked like a Van Dyke. Prince Michael did shave it for his own wedding but he looks better with it.

Since you talked about the king and the tzar we should mention their third cousin kaiser Wilhelm and his extraordinary moustache

For anyone interested theres alot of historical research about the significance of beards and how theyve been adopted as symbols of power, wisdom and status. The assessment that beards, and especially mustaches, fell out of favor after the war periods in Europe has alot to do with who had them. This extends far beyond Europe and the world wars across many societies and is super fun rabbithole to dive into

There is some weird stigma in my mind what a beard means and it’s really hard to shake. Part of me sees beards as appearance of knowledge and interest but another part thinks they are rough idk

Good call--its his grandson, Prince Albert, brother of George V----Albert died before his father, King Edward VII, so he never took the throne.

I wonder if WW1 had an effect on beard fashion. Lice for example. Or perhaps maybe the earliest use of gas masks and needing to be able to get a good seal around the face.

funny when it comes to rock n roll. Everyone was cleaned shaved and short haired in the 50s and early 60s. suddenly the Beatles started to wear beards and having long hair, for instance in 1969, during the rooftop concert, let it be album, kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z32whIKcqJZjo6M&ab_channel=BeatlesBootlegsBrazil for instance . in 22 agust 1969, all the beatles had beards without paul. then everyone went the same way. Brian wilson got a huge beard, mirrison from the Doors with a huge beard, long hair became a thing in the 1970s, like Pink floyd, Led zeppelin, Queen, black sabbath, the rolling stones right after beatles were done with music. intresting that rock styles changes so much. not a fan of the hair bands in the 1980s
