Here's what makes Greg so great, so superior than all the guys doing podcasts, never-stop-talking guys: He's just honest. No agenda. He's not trying to convince us, has no underlying inspiration to tell stories selectively, no axes to grind. Just a guy who led an interesting life, with a long career on TV, sharing cool stories.

Wrestling takes its toll on the body and a lot of those guys didn't have a long career like the Hammer. Absolutely believable because A shows often only had about 6 or 7 matches. So let's say a 15,000 seat venue with ticket prices on average around $15 in the mid 80's is soldout, common place back then. That's $225,000. If you're paying...let's say seven matches and we'll even say one of them is a tag match. That's 16 wrestlers. Hell, I'll add four managers too (Heenan, Blassie, Albano, Hart). 20 people total. If the average is around even $5000 per wrestler and manager, that's $100,000. So the WWF and venue are splitting $125,000 easy and we haven't sold a single concession, piece of merch, or parking yet. And that's me being generous for payouts AND ticket prices, which were likely higher in NYC, Boston, Philly, and Washington DC, four main staples of the WWF. These guys were making a killing. And this is PRECISELY why all of you who talk about Hogan needing to cede his spot, that is why all those guys speak GLOWINGLY of him. To keep THAT train running for six years, taking away Savage's run in 88 and Warrior's in 90...remarkable.

Those dudes earned every penny. Wrestle 5 times in 3 days in 3 different states on a regular basis with absolutely no offseason. And arenas coast to coast border to border were jam packed turning people away in some towns for big cards. Always blew me away when people would talk about wrestlers unionizing...not that they couldn't use one for benefits and protection but from a financial standpoint why they hell would anyone near the top of the card especially the half dozen top guys ever even dream of unionizing back in those days. Not that the money isn't great now but guys that think all the wrestlers should be paid equally don't grasp the idea of who the fans are paying to see
@lakebay9723 жыл бұрын
They wanted to unionize so they could acquire health insurance and fill prescriptions. Back then, there was nothing offered; and wrestlers were considered too much of a liability. Plus, flights, hotels and rental cars were on your own; but with a union, a company could provide those.

@@krlm2280 Man, that suplex from the cage was sick! I also vividly remember insane amounts of flashbulbs going off during that spot also.

Greg was such a great Heel. Back in the early 80's when I was a young lad I couldn't stand him! After watching these interviews of his he's a National Treasure.

The Rock N Wrestling connection got me into pro wrestling but the Greg Valentine vs Tito Santana feud kept me watching pro wrestling. Have a soft spot in my heart for that rivalry.
