That was more than likely a great white. The first sign was when you saw the seal lions hopping out of the water like that. They were probably fleeing because they saw the shark. Great video as always!

Greg, that was epic. I Love to see the ocean fishing, to mix it up. As far as the whale if it was one. They've never intentionally hurt anyone, especially an Orca. But they don't swim alone, and they're usually in a pod. I'm stumped on this one. You'd have to research what predators, usually swim in the SF Bay area. Enjoyed another great season greg! 🎄 🌊 🎣

My opinion was it was a sea lion. They move very fast and love to harass me and my kayak. They are huge. I’ve been towed out to sea with one attached to my speargun float line and stringer of fish. I have a video on that incident on my Yakventures channel. You could of had a shark but my opinion was it’s a pesky sea lion bull. Merry Christmas Greg and you inspired me to kayak fish and start my own channel. Tight lines.

Over 30 years ago I got properly swirled around by a massive basking shark (adults reach over 25ft. in length) one windy, dim and overcast, gnarly day, surfing Benbecula, Outer Hebrides... alone. The ambient conditions weren't comfortable when suddenly a large dark shadow passed beneath me and a dorsal fin appeared 3ft. proud out of the water about 8 feet away. It then made a couple of close turns around me sat on my board. They're plankton eaters so was I frightened? Absolutely! Utterly! Yes! It's a serious shock when a shark that huge just pops up unexpectedly. I don't care it didn't have teeth. I only thought about that later. It's not something I'll ever forget. Whoa! I totally get your reaction! You'll not forget it either.

id say it's not just the floro line it's the rod ur using the reel and probably the gear ratio ur using. The reel id say if u gonna be using bait caster u need to get a 300 size like the lews superduty or even a Avet Mc spool it with braid with some backing on and then u need a little beefier rod like a Medium heavy rod that can handle 3oz to 6oz. An I mainly use reels that are bringing in 33inches and up per turn. An I bet u won't be losing fish at all from missed bites.

Greg, not to discourage you from ocean fishing, but I should remind you, as a fellow ocean kayaker we aren’t at the top of the food chain out there. We are somewhere below the sharks and above the seals. Bottom line is, the area you encountered your shark is just northeast of a well known great white breeding ground. The Fallon islands. It was no accident you were checked out by a great white. They feed on seals and seals feed on bottom fish especially in kelp beds. When you catch a fish it attracts seals looking for an easy meal by stripping it off your hook, sharks are looking for seals distracted by your catch. Get the picture? I fish off the Northern California and central Oregon coast. Usually to cold for Great Whites. Usually! Tight lines…

White shark for sure. They're patrolling the shores right now for seals. When you see groups of seals on the move like that you can rest assured white sharks are in the area. Plus, if that was a whale and that close to the surface you'd have seen more water displacement. The flukes move up and down so odds are it'd probably would have broken the waters surface if it was a whale.
