@@jamescaliendo1030I mean, do you genuinely think every musician who wants to get better or enjoys general musicianship only does so to work professionally? That’s a pretty weird take. I practice drums daily and have for about 13 years with 0 intent to play professionally or make that my career lol. Like have you never tried to get better at a thing simply because you enjoy it?

Drummers seem to always have the best facial expressions in most bands. And always make it look easy. I'm always in awe of singing drummers because they have to use all four limbs and their voice and keep time for the rest of the band. I do have a couple of friends who are brothers where one plays the bass and other the guitar but, the bass player also plays the keyboard at the same time like JPJ(except not with his feet, lol). I've also seen them play side by side where they picked their own guitar but, played the neck of the other brothers bass/guitar.

Almost 30 years ago, I was fortunate enough to be asked to go out to dinner with Gregg after a clinic he did. Some close friends of mine owned a drum shop and they brought Gregg in for a clinic. I helped them out with sound for the evening. I'm a guitarist by trade but my band had a pretty good size PA back then and it was perfect for the event. First, the clinic was a music masterclass for any musician. He didn't just come out with a lot of chops and just blow. He started out sort of laidback and ramped things up gradually. Second, Gregg is one of the funniest human beings walking the planet. He had tons of crazy cassette tapes with all kinds of nutty stuff....Buddy Rich firing his band...Barry White trying to do radio promos.....and funny stories that had us all rolling on the floor. He's the flipside to Steve Lukather.....the drummer version of Luke. But, my main takeaway was how warm and friendly Gregg was with everyone. He answered any and every question honestly - on any subject you asked about. Just a really kind, open cat that you can tell is a real "people person". He's a master musician and teacher, but he seems like a lifelong student as well. Whenever Gregg speaks, it's usually to your benefit to pay attention. I love this video.

As a drummer, I've been following Greg's career since the mid eighties. Knew he was on David Lee Roth's band. Then in Modern Drummer Magazine, read he graduated North Texas State and played in the 1 O'Clock Lab Band. So I was like ok, he's really, really good (1986'ish). Been learning from Gregg ever since. Who would have ever guessed he'd be backing up Ringo in his band, touring with him for years. But, I'm sure Ringo Knows how good Gregg is too and it's what I would have done. Or any drummer who was a Beatles fan would do with a guarantee of a well funded touring career with sold out shows globally.

Gregg is so fun to watch... it just looks like he has a blast playing all the time!! That bit where he talks about singing the songs he's playing to is pretty much the way I come up with parts. It might not even be what my friend who wrote the riff thought of, but if it reminds me of something I feel fits I'll play it. Then it just so happens it does not slot in so easily so I'll have to mess with it, but it just gets me started on something to get the arrangement done. Great stuff guys!!
