It’s harder today but Greg is still right. I spent the last 5 years living with my mom and saving everything I can. This January I acquired my first piece of land. It’s possible folks. If the math doesn’t add up, do something to change that. It’s not easy but it’s also not impossible with the right imagination and hard work.

Like most all arguments, there is truth to what Greg is saying and there is also truth to what some are saying regarding the road being tougher nowadays. Can someone still achieve prosperity in America today? Absolutely. But it’s not debatable that the younger generations today have it much harder than their parents and grandparents. The Boomer generation would do well to remember they didn’t get where they are at completely on their own. Turn around and lend a helping hand when able. And for the younger generation, listen to what Greg is saying. Work hard and realize success comes through sacrificing your desires today to build the long term dreams of tomorrow.

Get a second job, that’s what I did until I got my debt paid off and then everything went into savings. Nothing wrong with working hard until you don’t need to anymore because you placed yourself in better financial shape. Heck I drove a 30 year old truck to work for 30 years. Folks laughed at me, but I got the last laugh. No new truck payments, everything went into a savings account. Government welfare and blaming companies for not having enough money will ruin your life. Stop doing that and get to work on improving your own life.

Thanks for the video! If you put your head down and work hard, it’s easier than what people think. Anymore everyone thinks they need the newest of everything tv,phone, vehicle, computer, clothes, and the list goes on. I have a coworker who drives all older vehicles because he can work on them himself. I bet they are from the 70s-90s. I have an older tractor from the 50s. I bought for 2 reasons one was a sentimental and the other it was price. It would be nice to have a more newer one but it does about everything I need it to do. If it doesn’t, I try to rig something up to make it work since it doesn’t have a 3 point hitch. Back then a 50 horse tractor was built like a tank 😂. Yes sometimes our family does spend money the wrong way.

Mulberry, I found a place below where the Robbins roost, I have transplanted almost 20 trees into pots, they will go into my pastures this fall. Free, thrown away pots only cost me soil and some elbow grease.

Our sheep absolutely love mulberries too!! But here in Iowa, mulberries spread quickly. They’re in every fence line, and they grow in every ditch. And they will not die unless you use toridon.

How do you generate revenue, Greg? I think you've said you have 300 head of cattle, plus a lot of sheep. Where do they all go?

Greg and Jan sell cattle and sheep for breeding stock and for meat, he is author and sells books, an educator and sells training and consulting, they raise train and sell livestock guardian dogs, have a business growing and selling mushrooms, and probably more as well. They are a busy couple and share so much of their wisdom with others.

@GregJudyRegenerativeRancher : Getting interest on your bank account is nice, but certainly not the best way to make the most of your savings. It would be much better if they could buy some sort of 'shares' of a regenerative operation. Are there any concepts like that in the US? In Germany we have 'social farming'. Some 50 or 100 people buy a plot of land (near a city), go there after work, do what needs to be done, plant some crops, harvest and take the produce home. I am wondering if this could also be done in the cattle business.

Okay. Sounds like I should go that route. I have a friend who is willing to give me three Nigerian dwarf goats - a ram and two does. I've got a family and small kids. I think they would be a good size and we can milk them if we choose.

Sheep love the mulberries too, I think that light coloured one was the type you use in Silk production, at least that's what they have in southern Greece which used to be a centre for silk production. They get a lot bigger and taste very similar, I think it depends on the soil because usually they say it is both sweet and sour, but yours will be getting some pretty decent organic fertiliser so maybe they are sweeter, regardless it's in the soil.

Get a lease on some grazing land first. Custom graze other folks cattle to learn the grazing business. Later if you desire, use your nest egg to purchase your own livestock and build from that. That’s exactly what we did starting out.

That $400 expense item is not a fact at all. Those are online survey's from Lending Tree and other outfits. Always take a look at who is doing those surveys and what they want. The real long running survey's the government runs (60k people spoken to, clear public methodology) show people are happy with their financial position but somehow convinced the overall economy and everyone else is doing badly. Online doom and gloom from people trying lend you money.

Greg, they aren't "spending" everything they make in the way you put it. Literally, workers are producing more profits but getting less back. Whole generations got screwed. And it's very hard to strike, tons more road blocks. So, insense you got these people who are producting 40% more. With even less stay at home moms so both parents are working there butt off. Without any real federal Child Care Subsidies, Add to the fact that there's also more expensive housing, more expensive power, nearly 0 federal low income housing. All of it bubbles together in a toxic Reagan era go big or go home stew that has ruined farming and ruined working. Keep in mind a lot of this doesn't effect people living in the EU, so you can literally be working for an international company transfer to the EU and actually get a better deal out of the whole things. Who would have thought a better chance at the American Dream in Sweden lol.

Yep. When rent is north of 50% of your income and food is about 30% there's only pennies left. Of course an $800 ticket is more in reach than a 20% down on 400K ($80,000) I fear for the kids coming up. A radical redistribution o wealth needs to happen or things will collapse. You should at the economics of Rome, the Senators all had huge slave run farms and out competed the free landowners. so they had to feed all the poor romans so they wouldn't riot and topple the system. Looks pretty similar to today.

Very well said @MistressOP. I follow the positive union news of strikes and strengthening unions that are getting the working people a more fair share. Farmer co-ops and non-corporate held farms are part of this trend. Meanwhile, Hedgefunds/private equity (the predatory wallstreet robber-barons), have taken out another favorite franchise amd are squeezing the workers to the point of homelessness. Everyone remembers what the private equity did to Toys-R-Us (while blaming it on "online shopping"), now we see such examples of businesses squeezed to death like Red Lobster, Cheesecake Factory, Shake Shack, and now Alamo Drafthouse. Behind every failure you can find a successful franchise bought up by private equity then made to pay off the loan that bought them plus pay profits and premiums to the private equity owners. This trend began in the late 70s and over the years regulations were stripped from corporations and banks that enable these vampires on society to thrive. Robert Reich even put his college class online to help more people get educated to where these things began. I also support Allan Savory and Dr. Allan Williams in their efforts to improve the soil and health of the farmer. Someone has to work in the factories, but zero people working 40hrs a week should be homeless because their pay doesn't cover basic housing, transportation, food, and healthcare.

check out the ChooseFI podcast. can’t tell you how many times i’ve heard stories of people retiring in their 30s and 40s on a teacher’s or walmart manager’s salary by frugal spending and savvy saving. yes, the system is making it harder, but it’s much much more achievable than you think. it’s limiting beliefs and cultural barriers that keep you down.

Then on top of that it pushes both parents to work making them get child care now. And every other country (western democracy gov) offers some type of child care (on top of paying a living wage in acordance with labor output) Then you got a problem. That's real math aspirational quick speak. Yes, you should be able to go to that concert. If you were being paid living wage or inline with your labor output. It would be an easy buy from time to time. God, knows people use to go on vacations in the 60s, 70s, 80s, almost all the way into the 90s until the stock by back came into play. Like, good lord yes you should be able to save but I'm not gonna beat a horse that's working 2 jobs surving like so many Americans are just because of poor voting habits of the few and not even the majority. MY guy, Yes, you should have time off with your kids. Yes you should have paid leave (international it's common even Micky'd workers have it in western nations except here) Yes you should go on vacation, and yes you should have money save because your being paid correct. The saddest part about all this is it's public information easy to look up but you got folks making an augerment for saving which I'm not even against but the problem is the amount of things so many have to go through to save is horrendous in this market. Most people aren't going to the concert, most folks aren't going to that vacation. It's whats hurts Florida, Cali, NV and so many other states right now. It's actually activily hurting America that you don't have fed childcare, fed free pre-k, fed low income housing, fed so many basic programs that have been attack. It's actually a huge deal to Rural America as well as City America. Straight up destroying this country. Do you know how many farmers would LOVe LOVe LOve for you to go on vacation at there farm in there extra housing. Watching wind or hops/ or cattle and taking it easy. You know how much the local farmers market would LOVE for you to have that vacation and check it out while your in town. Buy some local Jam. Economies just like farms are ECOsystems.
