Written by St Thomas Aquinas in the 13th century, probably in the wake of the declaration of the feast of Corpus Christi, the "Adoro te devote" was not originally intended for any liturgical use but most likely used as a private prayer by St Thomas in his daily adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, but was later incorporated into the Roman Missal of 1570 after the Council of Trent. St Thomas also composed the Sequence "Lauda Sion", and the hymns "Pange Lingua", "Sacris Solemniis" and "Verbum Supernum".
